We’ve kicked off the first of two projects this year in MYP Grade 10 Design with our ritual Day of Design.

We began the day with some formative assessment using Mentimeter to check for understanding about MYP Design as a discipline and the steps for success. This was followed by an exploration of ‘Design Thinking’ and students were than given an opportunity to renovate their digital portfolios (iFolios) which serve as an important medium for sharing learning and progress throughout the year.

A major theme for the Day of Design was ‘failing as a necessary means of learning and improving’. Students worked in teams to generate ideas and rapidly prototype an artificial heart valve. The aim of the prototyping process was to give students a hands-on experience manipulating a wide range of materials which they will use in the formally assessed interdisciplinary project that will follow.
