What have you learned from completing this project?

From this project, I have learnt how to use adobe illustrator. I had never heard of it before this, and how I feel confident using it to ink designs. I also now have a better understanding of graphic novels. I have learnt about graphic novel conventions and can now use them when designing and I can also recognise them in other people’s work.

How does it relate to the unit question(s)?

How does the use of visuals help reinforce a particular message?

The use of visuals can be very powerful in reinforcing a message. Although words are great, visuals are very powerful if used effectively and can leave a lasting impression on an audience. For example, choices of colour can convey a mood or tone.

To what extent does technology facilitate the communication of ideas?

Technology can definitely make communication of an idea or message much easier. By using adobe illustrator, I could make much more contrast in my work, therefore making a more effective product, as well as making layout of my design more accurate and quicker.

    How can visuals reveal meaning?

Visuals can reveal meaning as there are many aspects of visuals that words cannot convey, such as facial expressions that provide insight into a character, and subtle colour choices to convey mood.

Do perspectives change through the the use of visuals?

Perspectives definitely change through use of visuals by using different angles and framing. A reader may be able to read more into a visual than into words on a page. Also, an audiences perspective on different characters may change through a facial expression, causing dramatic irony for the audience and thus making it more interesting.

What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome these challenges?

I had a bit of technical difficulties with adobe illustrator, as half my page would occasionally disappear across the diagonal. I decided to take screenshots of my work along the way and save it in many different places constantly so that I wouldn’t lose my work. I also think that I zoomed in way too far on the first couple of panels and put in way too much detail. This meant that it took an extremely long amount of time, much longer than it needed to. I overcame this by scrolling out a bit and not putting as much detail and this was much quicker, but didn’t make a difference to the overall look once I scrolled out to the actual size. Also, my ‘fill’ didn’t work, when I tried to use it, it went outside the outline and only filled a diagonal half of the area. To overcome this, I used a wide, round brush to colour it in manually.

If you were to do this project again, what would you differently?

If I did this project again, I would implement the suggestions I got from my survey. I would use more contrast with colour and I would make the cellist’s purpose more obvious to the reader. I would also start my process journal earlier, as I realised that I needed to take screenshots about halfway through, so I missed out on taking screenshots of some of my process. I would also have asked more questions earlier as I was a bit confused at the beginning of the project as I was away for a week, but instead of asking questions, I tried to work it out myself. I realise that I could have saved a lot of time by asking.

  • 1) What was your score and how accurate do you think it describes your attraction to the idea of starting a new business?

I got 15/21. It says that starting a business might be risky for me due to some of my answers in the quiz. I think that this is pretty accurate although i think that my answers depend a lot on how passionate i am about the business idea.

    2) What creates opportunities for entrepreneurs to start a business?

Gaps in the market provide opportunities to provide services and goods and appeal to the markets needs and wants. Also, if an individual is not happy with how a current company in that industry is supplying a product, then they may have a better idea that they think will work better.

    3) How do entrepreneurs respond to the needs & wants of society?

Entrepreneurs may have a business idea due to a common want or need in the society. Because people want/need it, the business should do very well. They change their businesses due to the changes in what the public actually wants at the time. Something may be trendy and popular at one point in time but trends move fast and so successful businesses must adapt.

    4) Why do individuals become entrepreneurs?

Some reasons why people become entrepreneurs are to follow their passions, earn more income, and/or for the freedom of being your own boss. Also, they may simply have an idea for a product that they don’t like how it works and decide to create a better one if they believe that they aren’t the only one who feels that way, for example, James Dyson.
