Project Genesis

Charlie Puth – One Call Away pdf

Explain the step by step process of this assignment.
In this project, the first step that I did was to do a lot of research on the internet, that includes watching the covers on youtube, on how to work on an arrangements on pop songs on musescore. Then after having an idea on how to do the arrangements on musescore, I started composing. I did the piano part, then the violin part.
Assess your success against your assessable criteria from your proposal.
I met all my assessable criteria from my proposal. However, there was still some of them that I was not able to meet because of various reasons. The first assessable criteria that I was not able to meet is the 4th criteria which was the 3 parts should be mixed well. This is because it already took me a lot of hours to do the two parts so unfortunately, I had to make the decision to not do the third part (second violin part). The second assessable criteria that I could not make was the 6th one – the structure that I must follow is the beat of the original song. I did not follow some of the beats/rhythms in the song because I thought it would be even better if I add my own beats and jazz that I learned in music class and try to apply them into my music to make this project even more meaningful.
Evaluate your learning and new skills acquired.
I have learned a lot in this genesis project. The main one was to learn to write the song after listening to it. This was very challenging for me as it was my first time doing something like this. Even though it was very challenging, I still had fun when I was doing this project. The second skill that I learned was to make two parts in a song and combine them. This was also challenging for me because not only did I need to think of some really interesting rhythms and notes, I needed to combine them, and harmonize them to make my song sound good and playable.
What challenges did you face and overcome.
The main challenge that I faced and overcame was to come up with rhythms that sound good, playable, but also sound like the original song. I spent the most time into the violin part’s rhythms. The second main challenge for me is to harmonise and make the chords sound good. I also spent a lot of time on the piano part. I took the song’s accompaniment as well as some covers on youtube for reference and recreate my own piano part. Even though there were a lot of challenges that I faced in this project and I found this project rather challenging, I still had a lot of fun doing it and learned a lot!

Genesis Research

First Research Link

I can take this as a reference and recreate my own version of this song.

Second Research Link

This is the original version of the song. I will use the same key and melodies from it.

Third Research Link

This is a violin version of the song with a lot of different arrangements. I will take these arrangements as inspirations and references to make my own arrangements.

Fourth Research Link

This is also a great violin cover which I found inspirational. I will take his arrangements as reference then make my own one.

Genesis Proposal

What is the goal for your assignment and why?

My goal for this assignment is to make an arrangement from a song. I am actually a really big fan of making arrangements of songs but I didn’t really have a chance to do it before, so the fact that I can do it in this assignment is amazing. I will choose a song which is rather slow so that it will be fairly reasonable for me to make arrangements. For my arrangements, I will play this songs in the violin and piano. I will make 2 parts for violin so it is a trio.

Outline/Process (Steps) to Achieve Goal.

1. Create a proposal and seek advice from Mr O’Toole.

2. Get inspiration from the internet.

3. Watch some tutorials on how I can do these kind of trio arrangements on a song.

4. Choose a song.

5. Start making the score of the 3 parts I will be playing.

6. Play and record my playing.

7. Start mixing.

8. Get feedback from Mr O’Toole.

9. Improve work.

10. Submit final work.

What criteria will you use to self assess this assignment?

1. My song runs smoothly

2. The tempo is same and consistent

3. Everything should be in tune

4. The 3 parts should be mixed well

5. The length of the song will be around 3-4 minutes

5. The structure that I must follow is the beat of the original song

Scale Warmups/Theory Test/Start of Year

Name *
Luke Poon

Discuss your practice routines and development on your instrument. *
In this year, I started playing percussion instruments and I have learned a lot. But in order to improve, I will need to practice. Even though I don’t have the instruments that I need to play in the pieces that we play in class and in the concert like timpani, crash, suspended cymbal, shaker, etc, I am very lucky that I can take the mallets home. So, I usually practice mallets every week, or sometimes a few times a week. Even know I don’t have to play mallets in the pieces we play in class and in the concert, I still found practicing the mallets at home useful for playing other percussion instruments. This is because when I am using the sticks playing the mallets, it will also help me develop my stick skills and practice rolling.

How successful were you at your theory test? Discuss the concepts that you did not master. *
As I got a 7 in the theory test, I still have room to improve. I had a lot of careless mistakes in the test and I believe if I had more practices with the topics we covered in the test, I would definitely have got an 8. The concepts that I didn’t do the best is natural minor and melodic minor. If I had more clear concepts of these topics, I would have done much better. My goal in the next theory test is to get an 8, or at least a 7.

What are your strategies to improve results in the subsequent months? *
My strategy to improve results in the subsequent months is pretty simple, which is do more practices. Besides doing the practices that Mr O’Toole gave us in class, I will also try to find some practices online and get more practices in order to get clearer concepts of the topics we need to cover and seek extra help when I struggle with the topics.
How do you show the IB Learner Profile in the music class? *
In my opinion, I show the IB Learner Profile, open-minded in class the most. This is because I am always willing to new theory technics even though I have taken theory tests, taken the musicianship course in APA before, and did diploma exams in violin and piano. I believe if I do more practices, I will definitely do better in the upcoming tests!
