The Final Conquest – Reflection

English/Arts IDU Crit C and D Reflection Form 2019

Kyle Kam
How well did you communicate your experience as a Hong Konger? *
I think that I expressed my point of view of myself as a local Hong Kong resident whose ancestors had a miserable life and feelings that had gone to an extent that will think about suicide and running away from reality well, because I used a good choice of tune in my skit and a good choice of music the video. After half of the video, I think I expressed hope in the future well, because of the tone I used for the ‘son’, the remix a made for a happy and joyous song.
How would you describe your personal success as an interdisciplinary learner? *
I would say I got all the jobs I set for myself well done, and I have even exceeded my expectations. I did carry out emotion in the scene, the music I played in the video had notes that are in beat, and the remix also sounds good. I also used the software instruments for the music. In the video, I also used stop motion and a drawing of a background as a representation of Art.
How would you describe benefits of the interdisciplinary unit with specific examples. *
I think I learned a lot from the video. Before making the video, I had to think of a story and the script for the skit, which trains my thinking and story configuring skills. During filming, I learned which gestures to use, and what tone for my drama. I also thought of which music to use, to make the most effect of emotion. This enhances my drama acting skills and my digital music skills. On editing the video, I learned how to make art and where to apply stop motion in the scene. This increases my ability to use art to convey my feelings to others.
What were the limitations of the interdisciplinary unit? Give specific examples… *
Throughout the whole project, there were some parts where I could improve on, I could have more people in my project. Since that could make the editing way easier. I could also have more ideas of art if I had teammates. I didn’t ask for much feedback on the music and script, which makes me have more chances to make grammatical mistakes, and also makes me nervous when I’m presenting my own project alone. However, overall in the project it was a great experience, and I could learn from these experiences to make future projects even better!
Grade yourself using the IDU Specifications. Easy if you have followed the above instructions!

Experience Week Reflection

How did you become more aware of your own strengths and areas for growth?

I learnt that there are actually many many people who are in need in this world, so everybody should give their best to help the needy. So, my service in this trip is to build a shelter for the Sunday school.

How did you undertake challenges that developed new skills?

I believe that I learnt how to hammer a nail, and not let the nail curve in a way.

How did you plan your service experiences?

I thought that building a shelter suits me, because I like building things, also, I think that cutting wood and hammering are something new to me, and I thought it would be interested, and it is.

How did you persevere in action?

Our shelter group helped each other out when one is tired, which resembles great teamwork. In the end, everybody was all sweaty and tired, meaning everybody paid a lot of effort.

How did you work collaboratively with others?

We tried communicating at our best, like a conversation of a duck and a goose. In the end, I also learnt a few more Malaysian words and phrases.

How have you developed international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding? How could your international-mindedness be developed more next time you engage in service?

I mainly asked the instructors to learn the language. I can ask people to learn their own language.

How much have you considered the ethical implications of your actions? How do you know that you made a positive impact? How could you consider ethical implications more the next time you engage in service?

This helped the village people have a better place.

How science can cause and solve environmental problems?

  1. Give an brief description of an oil spill and how it can be cleaned up using science.

For example, an oil spill occurred because a cargo ship filled with oil and fuel sank. It can be cleaned up by skimming the oil from the water, it’s a pretty fast way, only that, it will also take in some water.

2. Is science good for humanity? Do the benefits of scientific discovery outweigh the   problems it causes?

I think science is good for humanity. Even though, it does worsen the pollution we have in our present day, we also have technology that improved peoples lives a lot, maybe in the future, humans can even find ways to prevent and even stop pollution!

vLog Design Post

What are some cultural considerations people make when designing products?

People consider of their own culture, language, symbols and traditions.

How does the design of a product communicate traditions and values?

The symbols carry messages, and it stands for something. Colours also matter, different colour have different meanings. For example, red can be identified as love, passion, but can also symbolise blood, insanity…

Are handmade products an effective way of minimising environmental impact? Why and why not?

Yes, this is because it really prove that the person made it him/herself. That makes it more meaningful.

Project Genesis – Product (Alpha) (TBH, FINAL)

YO YO YO! What’s up guys! The following music is a mashup of remixes of songs! I used a lot of effects and many songs, try to guess ’em all! This is the final product. I used 6 MIDI tracks, and 10 loops. Anyways, I spent at least 3 hours on this, I definitely hope it paid off! 😀

I hope you enjoy this upcoming music and don’t forget to comment on it!

Thank you for listening!

Project Genesis – Criteria Di

Explain the step by step process of this assignment…
Firstly, I looked for some good popular songs with a similar tempo, this is because it will be easier for me to combine them. Secondly, I made MIDI tracks for the songs, this is because I said I wanted to do a mashup of remixes of songs, which worked well for me. Thirdly, I cut, copy and arranged the MIDI to be mixed together, this is the mashup part. Fourthly, I made transitions with the MIDI, this is because the songs don’t link very well with each other’s last and first note. Finally, I added the final vocals, transitions for the vocals and the effects (e.g.Distortion, Reverb), this is for the remix mashup to be more lively than just notes.
Assess your success against your must-haves and desirable qualities from your proposal…
I did follow my must haves and also fulfilled the desirable qualities for the music, totally 10 loops, 6 MIDI tracks, and 2 drummers. Also, the remix mashup is almost 5 minutes long. This does satisfy all my must haves and desirable qualities, it even exceeded my own expectation. I had thought about only having a remix mashup of just 4 songs, but in the end, I used a total of 10 songs!
Evaluate your learning and new skills acquired.
I learned how to make an actual mashup, and also learned how remixes can be made better (e.g. to change the bootlegs, material or featuring the parts of the artist’s song). Also, I learned how to input cool effects which can make it more lively, and lovely. Not just that, in the making of the MIDI, I sometimes used double chords on certain notes to amplify some intense parts.

What challenges did you face and overcome?
I faced a few challenges in the making of this remix mashup, it was hard to find songs which have a similar tempo, it was hard to choose out of many many songs in such different themes, finally I chose the songs that match the intense and exciting theme (e.g. Megalovania, No Mercy, We Are Number One…). I also faced the problem of the endnote and starting note of songs not matching, therefore, I need to make transitions to connect them. The MIDI tracks themselves were a problem too, it was hard to make those chords sound like the song originally was, but after a really long time of clicking, it was accomplished. Finally, it was the vocal for No Mercy, it was the only track running, and it sounded odd, so I added a drummer to pair with it, and it sounded better and linked better.

Project Genesis – Research

|What information are you using from this link?

|I used this link to research for effective ways to do a medley of music. For |example, having the song end with the same note as the next incoming song can |attach them well.

|Link of your research

|What information are you using from this link?
|This link leads me to information on how to make remixes. Like, keeping it |similar in a way that it is not the same thing.

|What information are you using from this link?
|This link shows me how to actually make a GOOD remix or to improve one, like |using special instruments and adding another instrument and ensemble.

|What information are you using from this link?
|This link shows me how to merge songs together well. Like having same tempo, |or same beat.

|Write down your must haves and desirable qualities you will use to judge your |success…
|I must have over 5+ songs to really test my skills on merging music. I must have |this song have a danceable feeling, with a beat which makes people feel the |melody and flow of the music using transmissions and the remixes of music.

Project Genesis Proposal

|Project Genesis – Criteria Ci

|What is the goal for your assignment?
|My goal is to make a piece of music which is an EDM with a mashup of several popular songs, and a remix of some other songs. Probably going to use the skills learnt in the previous projects, like using real life sounds and insert some effects.
|Outline/Process (Steps) to Achieve Goal.
|First, I’ll find a few popular songs which suit for a certain genre or mood. Secondly, I’ll arrange the songs in some order and try to connect those songs together with suitable transitions. Thirdly, I’ll choose loops which fit the spot and make MIDI tracks to fit the music.
|Why this project?
|This project is the perfect opportunity for me to try all skills at once and see the effect.
|What do you hope to learn?
|I hope to learn how to make an actual piece of music, by using this project to attempt this work can help have feedback on my work, to know where I need to improve.
|What are you must haves for this assignment?
|I would say 10+ loops and 3+ MIDI tracks, a drummer. The mashup piece must be at least 3 minutes long.
|What are your desirable qualities you hope to add in for your assignment?
|I hope to add more MIDI Instruments to improve the quality of the music.

Sounds of CDNIS Project

Hello guys! It’s Kyle (aka TLG) again, the following music is my product of the Sounds of CDNIS music project. In this song, I used some sounds I heard in CDNIS, a few MIDI Instruments, a drummer and several loops, there will be some intense feeling and a calming part in the middle which is a remix of an excerpt of some song you might have heard of. Anyways, hope you like it! =D

Describe the process of this assignment.
This assignment was a fun and challenging one, because it took me some time to think about what sounds to use, and how to edit these voices/sounds. The loop choices were hard too, because there were too many good loops to choose. However, to me the most challenging part, was to think about the tune for the music piece, there are many types of moods and different tempo, which makes many different effects for the song.
Discuss your CDNIS sounds and how useful they were for your end product.
It made my end product not as boring as just MIDI Instruments and loops, definitely made it more interesting. My first sound which is the chair rotating sound. For this, I chose a chair in particular, which made a rather unique scratching sound, and recorded it. The zipping sound was the sound when I adjusted my headphones. The most fun one was when I recorded Mr. Lee saying ‘Maple syrup’.
Evaluate your learning and new skills acquired.
I learnt that I could record other sounds than just making MIDI tracks and rely on pre-made loops. As in the previous work, I needed to change the MIDI for Marshmello ~ Alone, I used the similar skills and made a changed MIDI of TheFatRat ~ The Calling, and added it into some part of the music, adding transmissions and such, which make them connect to the rest of the song.
What challenges did you face and overcome?
Firstly, it was hard to decide on to record which teacher and what they say. Secondly, as I have said above, there are just so many good loops for me to choose, which made me have hard decisions and dilemmas.
Lastly, the tunes of different sounds, the mood and tempo, were hard choices too.

Pro MIDI Assignment

Hey guys! This is my second music assignment. I used the music Marshmello ~ Alone for this project. I used a couple effects like distortion and reverb, I hope you like it! =)

Extra Meme Music (pretty short)

And an ear killing version of it (Obvious warning! VERY LOUD)
