My Clock Design

This is a link to my answers to these three question about my clock.

    1. What were the most constructive pieces of feedback?
    2. How did you successfully satisfy the design specifications?
    3. How would you improve your clock?

Process of human proportion

Before we started to make our human proportions, we learned hot to draw them by watching 2 videos, standing, and running proportion. Once we had some practice we searched a position of a sport and sketched it into our books. After that, we were given a stick man but we still had to put it together by using wires. Then we created the mussels with foil, we tape to make sure the foil stayed in its place and to create clothes. I had to make a helmet for my snowboard proportion, I did the shape with foil and put the tape on top. I made my snowboard with cardboard and put tape on top again. Finally, I made a cap using wire to create the shape. I then took the tape, and I placed it from the wire to the middle of my proportions back. I still need to paint my proportion…

Experience Week – Sabah 2019

This year Experience Week I chose Sabah, there are 2 reasons why. First reason: Sabah was the most adventurous and hardest, second reason:  My older brother went to Sabah last year and he said it was amazing and I should go there. I think I made the right decision to go to Sabah (I loved it!).

Day 1 – Departure

Day 2 – First service day

Day 3 – Second service day

Day 4 – Final and a half day of service, High ropes, Rafting Preparation for jungle

Day 5 – Trek to the jungle

Day 6 – Zip lining, Mari Mari, Plane

Medal Challenge

We created our own medallion on illustrator and the laser cutter printed it out for us using wood. The first step is to sketch out your two designs (see the picture below).

The second step is to create your designs on illustrator.

First, you have to know how to use all the illustrator tools. We learned more about it watching a video on how to use the tools, we started creating our designs on a template Mr. Metz provided for us with detailed instructions such as the award shape needs to be 80mm by 80mm, a 5mm by 5mm hole at the top of your medal, etc.

Ukulele Song – Budapest

How is your recording the same and different compared to the original song? What were your reasons behind your decisions?

The strumming has the same chords and pattern as the artist uses in his song, there are three different chords C, F, and G. I kept this the same because of the chords together sound nice and the strumming pattern is different from any most songs because it starts with a single strum on the C string. The tempo of my piece of music is slower than the original tempo. This gives you more time to enjoy the song and the tempo is easier to sing for the audience (because it is slower). I added piano because it goes well with the drum and ukulele, it keeps the tempo together. My drum keeps the beat with a basic sound and simple patterns to match the song.

How did your music classes prepare you for this assignment?

First, I to recorded every chord (C, F, G) then edit them to make them sound nice, then I copy and pasted all the chords I needed for every measure, and then I put them in the right order. Mr. OToole listened to it and helped me make the chords even sound nicer and fixed the timing of my strumming ( on Garageband ). Once my strumming sounded done I moved on to my drums, I found the right timing. I did my drums second because when I move on to the piano, I can follow the beat of the drums and play the notes on the right timing. Once the drums were finished I moved on to the piano ( an instrument the original song doesn’t contain ). I asked miss Po where the chords C, F, and G were on the keyboard because I have no knowledge about the piano. I finished piano, I made sure every beat started at the same time. Finally, I started the singing, but before  I listened to the song a few times, so I know when to start and stop singing. When everything was done I asked Mr. OToole for feedback and he helped me edit my piece of work.

Time management

At the beginning of this assignment, I started with a different song, but I kept on struggling. I choose an easier song to play (recommended by Lily), Budapest. It cost me a lot of time, I had to catch up, I came to lunches to work on my editing, recording and asking for feedback. Then after a week or two, I was back on track. I was able to finish it on time and had time to do my reflection in class.

Clarinet Assessment – Music

Go for Excellence #84 – 22:1:2019, 11.55

Music: Ukulele Recording ( Au Clair de la Lune )

Here is my recording of Au Clair de la Lune ( by Camille Saint-Saëns and Gerard Beauchamp )…

Discuss your Ukulele song choice and the skills you acquired.

I chose the song called, ‘Au Clair de la Lune’ because it is a French song ( I speak french ) and I knew the song already. The first four measures are repeated in the measures 5 until 8, F F F G, A G, F A G G, F. It is difficult the transition with your fingers between the notes F and D in measure 11. You can play this piece in any rhythm, only if you know when you have to start and stop singing.

How did it go…?

At first, I was struggling because I couldn’t remember where every note was, I didn’t enjoy playing the ukulele at first. Until I could remember every note ( I could play without looking at my sheet ), I started to enjoy it.

Discuss your overall understanding of Garageband and its processes. How has your skill at Garageband impacted your song?

I have no experience with a ukulele or GarageBand, so everything was new to me.  I didn’t use the metronome button because I knew when I had to play every beat, I sang the beats in my head. The tempo of my piece was 80, not to slow and not to fast. First I struggled a bit with strumming because it didn’t sound right, I kept on recording again and again. When I finished my three recordings, I saw that the melody and strumming were not always in time. I started to trim and cutting by pressing on command  ‘T’  and dragging the audio region forwards or backward. I tried to use enable flex but I wasn’t sure how to use it. In the end, I pressed command ‘J’ so the audio region would be one track.

Domestic Workers in HK

During Experience day I was learning about helpers in HK also known as ‘domestic workers’. I learned lots of things about them, such as they only get paid 4000 HK dollar per month, sometimes even less. Some helpers get verbally, physically or mentally abused, the employers have no right to do this. In this situation they go to the organisation called ‘HELP for Domestic Workers’, they help them with their employers. Helpers won’t quit their jobs because they won’t have money to bring to their family. Another reason is, then they need to find a new job in less than two weeks or they will have to go back to their home country.  They have one day of rest every week ( mostly on Sunday ), they enjoy dancing, singing and going to church. I liked when we had to act out a situation and make a good or bad ending. I learned new things about helpers, how they get treated, what they do in their free time and why they wanted to be a helper. Since Experience day I helped my helper more with washing the dishes and preparing the table. I realized how difficult it could be for helpers ( to leave their family is one example ).

Instrument Research

In music we have to choose a band instrument such as the trumpet, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trombone, tuba or percussion. I choose clarinet because I like the sound of it and I don’t have much experience with music (this is one of the easier ones).

If you want to learn an instrument, you also need to know how to take care of it. So I watched some videos…

Supplies you need or are recommended:

  • Yamaha Key Or
  • A common paper towel
  • Pull through swaps
  • Rubbing alcohol (spray bottle)
  • Duster brush
  • Cleaning cloth

Here are some clarinet covers that I liked:

A goal that I want to achieve is, ‘I will try my best to practice everyday at least 10min.’

My Logo – Design

I like playing volleyball and my dog, Choco, is awesome (he is a labradoodle). I left it black and white because it is different from everyone else his/her logo (contrast).

What about some feedback:
  • In what ways does my logo represents me? If you can’t figure out how it represents me, what could I add ?
  • Could I improve on something ( element ) to make it more clear? If yes, what could change?
  • Is this too complicated? If it is what could I delete or change to make it more simple?
  • Is this memorable? If yes what makes it memorable?

After reading all the feedback I made 2 paragraphs:

In what ways did I create a successful logo?

My logo was successful with the idea of a dog playing volleyball, which makes it memorable for most people. Everyone understood how it represents me, the two things that I deeply love. What some commenters like was that my logo was different from everyone’s else’s because it didn’t have any colours. Most logos have shapes around them but mine doesn’t, this way it looks like the dog has jumped really high you can’t even see the ground ( cool ) and it is again different from other logos.

What improvements would I make to my logo?

One of the changes I can make is, someone’s idea was putting a coloured circle behind it, so it  would help to make it more interesting and complete. The dog was a bit complicated and unclear so I might want to ask some people ‘What can I change of my dog to make it more clear of what it is?’ or I could get some inspiration from the internet. One of the commenters said: ‘Maybe for the volleyball net, you should have two lines at the side to show that its a net.’, if that will make the volleyball net more obvious than I surely use it. Another commenter said: ‘I think you should make the dog much simpler or get rid of the volleyball net, as I can tell it’s volleyball with just the ball.’ (thank you for your opinion), I think if you would get rid of the net, some people will think I play basketball or netball, so I will leave the net. Then there are some small details that need some perfection.

I changed somethings in my logo and now it looks like this….

What do you think about it?
