The Challenge: Students that are first introduced to the MYP programme tend to be overwhelmed with questions and concerns. However, many students are afraid or uncomfortable to talk to adults or the USSC about their personal concerns. In addition, when it comes to academic questions, it might be more useful to have access to more different suggestions from other experienced students.
The Solution: Every grade 6 student will have the privilege to sign in and have an account on an Answer Question website called SAQ (Social Academic Question). This website is owned by a club in this school named the Social Academic Club. Students in grade 7-10 are allowed to join this club to help and support the “newcomers” of the upper school. The website is separated into two sections; academic, and social. These two aspects are the two most significant stress source for grade 6s. Grade 6s are allowed to ask questions about their studies and other problems that will later be answered by SAC members.

- Help lower school students who don’t want to get help from adults
- Closer to students in terms of age, thus more connections
- Experienced answer from upper school students
- Chances to develop on decision making are reduced since students might rely on the replies

Thinking about the 2019 GR8 Innovation Day, my biggest takeaway was how we could think creatively to help the G6 students to have a better transition to upper school. We listened to G7 students and lower school teachers suggestion. We were separated into different roles according to our strengths and interests to complete the project. This could assess our communication and how we cooperate within a group. In addition, the time of our project is limited which we need to manage our time.

|What are your Personal Goals and Intention of this project?|
|Our personal goals and intention of the project are to use one of our group member’s poem as an inspiration to demonstrate Hong Kong in our perspective through a laser wood cut drawing. We want to combine our strengths and interests to create a meaningful product showing the message of change in Hong Kong. Our artistic intention is according to the main message of the poem is showing that ding ding tram has been a steady presence in an otherwise changing city which is Hong Kong. The tram travels through the changing times like an observer of the city.|

|This project connects to the English poem of our choice. The poem is using the voice of a tram talking about the change in Hong Kong through the decades. For our project, we are creating a laser wood cut drawing (colored) of Hong Kong, with a tram in the foreground, and the background buildings. The left side buildings would be of the past and right side now. The drawing is a visual representation of the poem.|

During the 2019 Experience week, I travelled to Yangshuo in Mainland China. We participate in various activities and mainly focused on two main concepts: service and community. Within only two days, we completed a service project in Min An Primary school. We were split into three groups building a volleyball court, a surrounding wall of a garden and the stairs. I became more aware of my own strengths and areas of growth threw during this project. Before the service started, the Insight Adventure tram split us into teams and planned about our role and what to work on. I was in the group of building stairs at first, however, when we actually started working I found that it is hard for me to making cement. It was not just tiring but too heavy for me to help. Thus, I transferred to the other group who were building the wall surrounding the garden. I found that I worked quite well there so I stayed there on the first day. The stone that we used to build the wall was really heavy, we needed two people in order to lift one stone. The pure cement we apply on the stone so the stone can connect together dry in a really short time so we need to put the stone into the appropriate place before it dries. One of the Insight Adventure teachers taught me how to apply cement correctly and helped me with putting the stones into the right place so I undertake this challenge and was able to develop a new skill. I also learn that teamwork is really important not only making the work efficient but learn from others and examine ourselves. On the second day of service, I went back to the stairs group and applied cement on the stairs to finalize it. I and other G8 students stayed there for almost the whole day and completed great progress. I was impressed that I persevere in action and worked really hard on the project. Even though the condition was bad, I was able to step out of my comfort zone and experience a completely different life. Since I speak Mandarin fluently, I helped with translating during the school project. I was able to developed international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding. I experience their life and have a better understanding of acceptance. Furthermore, we not only help to change the condition of the school, but we also played we the kids and both of us were happy and enjoyed.
During this lab experiment, we were told to separate a mixture of oil, sand, salt, plastic, water, and some iron filings. We started with the plastic since it was a mechanical mixture it floated because it is less dense than oil and the other particles. We used tongs and picked out the plastic by hand. One of the harder procedures was separating the sand because sand and water don’t mix they are a heterogeneous mixture which means that the sand sinks to the bottom. But when using the strainer, some sand sill fell through the small holes which don’t perfectly work for separating. Instead, we add one more step for filtration which we used the filter paper to get the remainder. The oil was separated using the separation funnel and that was one of the easier procedures because due to density, the oil stays separate from the water so we just needed to wait until the water drop. The salt was one of the longest processes because evaporating the water needed time and so the salt would be the remainder. The water was able to leave the salt behind after the evaporation, because due to heat, water evaporates into steam and salt is a separate molecule than water, therefore they crystallize and stay on the basin.

What are some cultural consideration people make when designing the products?
The design on the acrylic is based on Chinese cultural background. Since I am Chinese, I understand the cultural pretty well so I demonstrated my knowledge when designing the products.
How does the design of a product communicate traditions and values?
The design of the product communicated transitions and value by possessing Chinese cultural factors such as Chinese characters and vectors of blessing representations. The lantern is a traditional culture that people used to signify their safety and would be gifted to newlyweds or couples without children to pass on the blessings. We added Chinese character since ancient Chinese write plays on riddle on the lantern.

Hand made products is an effective way of minimizing environmental impacts. It is environmentally friendly since it is created without using chemical elements.
