The Challenge: Students that are first introduced to the MYP programme tend to be overwhelmed with questions and concerns. However, many students are afraid or uncomfortable to talk to adults or the USSC about their personal concerns. In addition, when it comes to academic questions, it might be more useful to have access to more different suggestions from other experienced students.

The Solution: Every grade 6 student will have the privilege to sign in and have an account on an Answer Question website called SAQ (Social Academic Question). This website is owned by a club in this school named the Social Academic Club. Students in grade 7-10 are allowed to join this club to help and support the “newcomers” of the upper school. The website is separated into two sections; academic, and social. These two aspects are the two most significant stress source for grade 6s. Grade 6s are allowed to ask questions about their studies and other problems that will later be answered by SAC members.

The Pros:

  • Club attendance is counted as CAS Hours
  • Help lower school students who don’t want to get help from adults
  • Closer to students in terms of age, thus more connections
  • Experienced answer from upper school students

The Cons:

  • Chances to develop on decision making are reduced since students might rely on the replies
  • 6 questions might not be enough for some


Thinking about the 2019 GR8 Innovation Day, my biggest takeaway was how we could think creatively to help the G6 students to have a better transition to upper school. We listened to G7 students and lower school teachers suggestion. We were separated into different roles according to our strengths and interests to complete the project. This could assess our communication and how we cooperate within a group. In addition, the time of our project is limited which we need to manage our time.

How well did you communicate your experience as a Hong Konger? *

I communicate my experience as a Hong Konger through my artwork by showing my impression of Hong Kong. I think Hong Kong is a city juxtaposition of both modern and historical. The ding ding tram has been a steady presence in an otherwise changing city which is Hong Kong. In this drawing, the buildings on the right symbolise the past which are traditional buildings with a lot of signboards, while the building on the left symbolises modern which are skyscrapers. The poem that inspired us suggested the changes in Hong Kong and the tram travels through the changing times like an observer of the city.


How would you describe your personal success as an interdisciplinary learner? *
I combined Music, English, Art and Design in my artwork which successfully accomplishes the purpose of interdisciplinary. I think I did well on this because of our idea of creating a piece of laser cut product and paint it to show elements of art. The product also shows the image of the poem clearly. This idea of interdisciplinary allows every person in my group to participate and work on what they prefer to do.


How would you describe benefits of the interdisciplinary unit with specific examples. *
The interdisciplinary unit which we combined two and more academic subjects that work together to create a powerful learning experience. We could develop their creativity, problem-solving, communication and critical thinking skills. We were required to use the poem that we wrote in English as an inspiration to create an artwork combining final art subjects. This allows us to take risks and understand others better, for example when deciding what we are going to create, I had an idea of adding a laser cutter piece which is a digital work in the artwork. This idea allows every person in my group to show their strengths and what they prefer to do.


What were the limitations of the interdisciplinary unit? Give specific examples… *
The limitations of the interdisciplinary unit are that it only allows us to combined specific subjects which might be our weaknesses that some of us dislike. We couldn’t investigate one concept but need to considerate multiple tasks, at the same time maintaining the quality of our work. This might affect the quality and each subject only include things on the surface. For example, we were required to combined two fine arts and we decide to add background music. The product of the music wasn’t decent but it does create the effect of relating the artwork.

What are your Personal Goals and Intention of this project?
Our personal goals and intention of the project are to use one of our group member’s poem as an inspiration to demonstrate Hong Kong in our perspective through a laser wood cut drawing. We want to combine our strengths and interests to create a meaningful product showing the message of change in Hong Kong. Our artistic intention is according to the main message of the poem is showing that ding ding tram has been a steady presence in an otherwise changing city which is Hong Kong. The tram travels through the changing times like an observer of the city.
Hows does this project connect to your English Poem of choice?
This project connects to the English poem of our choice. The poem is using the voice of a tram talking about the change in Hong Kong through the decades. For our project, we are creating a laser wood cut drawing (colored) of Hong Kong, with a tram in the foreground, and the background buildings. The left side buildings would be of the past and right side now. The drawing is a visual representation of the poem.

During the 2019 Experience week, I travelled to Yangshuo in Mainland China. We participate in various activities and mainly focused on two main concepts: service and community. Within only two days, we completed a service project in Min An Primary school. We were split into three groups building a volleyball court, a surrounding wall of a garden and the stairs. I became more aware of my own strengths and areas of growth threw during this project. Before the service started, the Insight Adventure tram split us into teams and planned about our role and what to work on. I was in the group of building stairs at first, however, when we actually started working I found that it is hard for me to making cement. It was not just tiring but too heavy for me to help. Thus, I transferred to the other group who were building the wall surrounding the garden. I found that I worked quite well there so I stayed there on the first day. The stone that we used to build the wall was really heavy, we needed two people in order to lift one stone. The pure cement we apply on the stone so the stone can connect together dry in a really short time so we need to put the stone into the appropriate place before it dries. One of the Insight Adventure teachers taught me how to apply cement correctly and helped me with putting the stones into the right place so I undertake this challenge and was able to develop a new skill. I also learn that teamwork is really important not only making the work efficient but learn from others and examine ourselves. On the second day of service, I went back to the stairs group and applied cement on the stairs to finalize it. I and other G8 students stayed there for almost the whole day and completed great progress. I was impressed that I persevere in action and worked really hard on the project. Even though the condition was bad, I was able to step out of my comfort zone and experience a completely different life. Since I speak Mandarin fluently, I helped with translating during the school project. I was able to developed international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding. I experience their life and have a better understanding of acceptance. Furthermore, we not only help to change the condition of the school, but we also played we the kids and both of us were happy and enjoyed.

During this lab experiment, we were told to separate a mixture of oil, sand, salt, plastic, water, and some iron filings. We started with the plastic since it was a mechanical mixture it floated because it is less dense than oil and the other particles. We used tongs and picked out the plastic by hand. One of the harder procedures was separating the sand because sand and water don’t mix they are a heterogeneous mixture which means that the sand sinks to the bottom. But when using the strainer, some sand sill fell through the small holes which don’t perfectly work for separating. Instead, we add one more step for filtration which we used the filter paper to get the remainder. The oil was separated using the separation funnel and that was one of the easier procedures because due to density, the oil stays separate from the water so we just needed to wait until the water drop. The salt was one of the longest processes because evaporating the water needed time and so the salt would be the remainder. The water was able to leave the salt behind after the evaporation, because due to heat, water evaporates into steam and salt is a separate molecule than water, therefore they crystallize and stay on the basin.

Assess your success against your must-haves and desirable qualities from your proposal… *
Reflecting on my must haves and desirable qualities from your proposal, I reach some of my expectations. My mashup had 4 songs in 4 different languages and more than 2:30 minutes. I combined the songs by cutting them into pieces so the mashup won’t be just a boring playlist. I applied creativity throughout the process, for example, when a song reaches a climax I combined the climax to another song’s climax and transfer to the other song. This can smooth the transition so it won’t be awkward and sudden. Things I didn’t meet my expectations are that my songs didn’t catch the same tempo perfectly. I seek for help from the teacher and managed to catch the tempo approximately at the beginning. However, when I edit the songs the tempo was messed up because of changing the tempo for the entire mashup. Furthermore, I hope to add in my original ideas and style in my mashup but I didn’t really manage to do this. I only add some sound effects but didn’t create a new style when combining the song.


Evaluate your learning and new skills acquired. *
Overall, I learned several new skills in this unit. I learned how to edit several songs together digitally to create a mashup while making sure the transitions are smooth. For example, adjusting the volume and overlap two sounds. I also gain knowledge about how tempo and beats could be combined. Furthermore, I learned more about GarageBand such as transpose and enable flex.


What challenges did you face and overcome? *
Challenges I face are that I didn’t know how to catch the tempo for each song. I tried it myself by watching the video that the teacher provided but it didn’t work out well. Therefore I seek out help from the teacher and completed the tempo matching. Another challenge is that the transitions were first really sudden and awkward. After I changed the volume and rearranged the sound structure, I was managed to overcome the challenge.

What are some cultural consideration people make when designing the products?

The design on the acrylic is based on Chinese cultural background. Since I am Chinese, I understand the cultural pretty well so I demonstrated my knowledge when designing the products.

How does the design of a product communicate traditions and values?

The design of the product communicated transitions and value by possessing Chinese cultural factors such as Chinese characters and vectors of blessing representations. The lantern is a traditional culture that people used to signify their safety and would be gifted to newlyweds or couples without children to pass on the blessings. We added Chinese character since ancient Chinese write plays on riddle on the lantern.

Are hand made product an effective way of minimizing environmental impacts? why and why not?

Hand made products is an effective way of minimizing environmental impacts. It is environmentally friendly since it is created without using chemical elements.
