Give a brief explanation of an oil spill and how it can be cleaned up.
An oil spill is when ships have leaks and pollute the water in oil. It can do immediate and large economic, social and environmental impacts. There are solutions to clean up oil spills, but it takes decades to remove all of the oil while being toxic. Currently, there are different ways to clean up these oil spills, skimming, dispersants etc. For my essay, I decided to pick the polymer method. It is a material where when put in water, it absorbs the oil and forms a sponge form. This is caused when the hydrocarbons come in contact with the polymer, it changes into a solid form.
Is science good for humanity? Do the benefits of scientific discovery outweigh the problems it causes?
Yes, science is probably one of the best things that happened to humanity in the first place. It has improved our world and opened new discoveries. It also can help save and make the world a more convenient and better place. For example: Without science, we would not have any methods to clean up oil spills. Without science, we would have very limited knowledge about humans and animals. But, I do not think that scientific discovery has fully outweighed the problems it causes. A lot of discoveries we come up with, it also comes with a downside. With oil spill, there are ways to clean it up, but the methods are not 100% perfect. Scientists are still trying to discover ways to find the best solutions.
What makes a credible scientist?
To be a credible scientist, you have to have reliable information. You need to be able to prove your explanations with data from the experiment. You need graphs, tables and also you need to explain the trend. Lastly, you need to use scientific reasoning for your experiment.
Why is the scientific ‘way of knowing’ used in medicine compared to other ‘ways of knowing’?
The scientific ‘way of knowing’ used in medicine are most likely given to patients. So scientists no only have to investigate how to make the medicine work, they also need to make sure that when they make the medicine it is safe for consumption. For other ways of knowing, we create an experiment that can help us get kind of reliable data for research.
Reflecting on scientific investigations is important because you can get more accurate results by repeating investigations with improvements to your method. How would you improve your seed dispersal investigation if you were to repeat it?
If I do this experiment again, I need to make sure that I can get more reliable data and try to control all my variables properly. I also should make sure the materials I use are good enough to collect fair data.
Today was the Innovation Week Exhibition, Innovation Week is where students have a whole week to come up with an idea that can benefit the society. I walked around and actually found some very interesting projects. The first one I approached was called “The Multi-Device Stand”, also known as MDS. It is supposed to be a stand for your handheld devices and hold it on eye level so you don’t strain your neck. I think that it is very useful because a lot of people use their phones nowadays, so this is a product for basically everyone. Another unique one is “DIY makeup”, the group used natural ingredients to make makeup products for example lipstick, blush, face masks and more. It turned out to be a bit abnormal but it still works fine. Even though I was gone for a most of the week, but being able to see my classmates creativity was a fun and good experience.
Right before break, we finished another unit for science. Overall, I found this unit very fun and interesting. For this Unit, we did a few activities. We had an activity where we had to pick an ecosystem and make a poster talking about it. I think that this activity was interesting because we got to have a lot of creativity while creating the poster. Another activity was also about ecosystems but specifically in Hong Kong. The topic I chose was light pollution because I feel like that was the topic I had the most knowledge on. The last activity was my favourite. We were put into groups and had to create a learning experience for the Grade 4s, There were a lot of topics to chose from and my group picked air pollution to marine life. We decided to do a jeopardy game so we could challenge to grade 4s and also teach them. While doing this unit, we had a quiz, I found that quiz okay because it wasn’t that hard or easy. I was able to explain and understand the questions.
For the past few months in science, I’ve been learning about structures and forces. After investigating about how to build and make good structures. We were told to design a structure that could help the school. We got into groups then planned on how to build the structure. We used cardboard to build the structure.
While we were building it, our goal was to make our structure stable and strong. We were most focused at parts where it was weak and added supports to it, so our project won’t fail or break. While we were building it, we also improved our project and made it more original and made it easier to build.
When we build the main parts, we used some books as weights to test it out. We took the results and if the structure is too weak, we’ll add more supports to the structure. I learnt that while building structures we not only need to focus on the parts of our structures, but also how to make the structure do what it’s supposed to do.
Personally, I think I did well in working with others since it was a group project, we divided parts to do to build our structure. While we were working, we faced some problems between group decision and also building problems. We would use all our brains to help solve a problem and we manage to get to a final point which really helps the group a lot. We conducted our research by doing experiments and testing out our structures. Right now, we still haven’t finished our project yet. I think we need to manage our time and figure out when to do our work.
