My favourite experience in science

Physics is my favourite experience in science because I had fun researching how different buildings have wind resistance. The main reason being that there was a lot of useful information and you could have fun while testing buildings. You could test your building against fans and have a giant fan try to knock down your building.  Another great thing was that physics is such an easy thing to learn but people never knew how it worked for a long time.

Ukulele Song – Your choice Lava

Warning Quiet

How is your recording the same as the original song? Why did you do this?

My version of the song “Lava” is not comparable to the original song. One of the only things that I kept same were the notes, which were c note, g7 note, f note. I kept these the same because changing that would have changed the song too much and would have changed the Hawaiian feel to it. Which is one of the main staples of the song and should not have changed.

How is your recording different compared to the original song? What were your reasons behind your decisions?

In my recording, there were a lot of changes from the original song “Lava” to make it seem more emotional. I did that by changing the strumming pattern from “down, down, up, down, up, down, up” to “down, down, down, down, down, down, down” because that made the song seem more depressing. The song was already a very sad song at the start but it had a small happy feeling to it but at end, it was overwhelmingly happy. By changing the strumming pattern the song lost some of its delightful feelings and causing the ending to become more emotional by making the song seem all hope was lost till the end. Another change was to make the tempo slower to make all the newly added emotions and old emotions cause a larger impact.

Ukulele Skills

Some of the ukulele skills I learned were how to strum consistently which helped in the recording practice but not in the recording itself because I do not have the skills to play the notes change well. Most of the problem is caused I change notes I will play the first couple beats incorrect. Next time I know I should have practised my strumming more to minimise the problem happening.
Garageband editing – digital instrument, drum use
Some of my most important skills this class were my ability to cut and paste and place everything in the correct beat on GarageBand. For example, after I got the introduction correct I just copied it and pasted it to use for the verse. This skill was very helpful because there are only three parts to the song. The verse, Chorus and finally the ending chorus. All of which except the last part were repeated.
Time management for your project
My time management skills were not very good this time because I had to rush at the end because I had not done any editing at the spring change which I should have done to make it easier to do.
Independent learning… (responsibility of getting things done on time)
In my independent learning, I learned how to strum good but not at changing the notes fast. The main reason for that is that I did not practice enough in my own learning time and should next time have learnt more efficiently by having better time management skills. Another thing I learned was how to copy and paste everything and then put it at the correct beat.

Marcel’s Ukulele song : Up On The House Top

My Ukulele piece

What is the key of your tune? Time Signature?
The time signature of the song I choose is 4/4, the key of note is the “c” note

What sort of rhythms are used in your song? *
“Up on the Housetop” consists mostly on quarter notes and eighths and the occasional half note for example at the first 4 lines of the song have ten quarter notes and four eighth notes and finally two half notes.
Discuss your note accuracy and rhythm accuracy in regards to your strumming and melodic playing… *
I was not quite accurate in my notes, the notes were the d note and the f note. I could not really play them because my fingers could move fast enough or not skilled enough to change to them from the “c” or “d” note. So I tried to continue practising on the first day of recording. I was pain achingly practising but there was not sufficient time left in class to record the entire song, so I choose to play each note once and later cut and edit everything. At the following recording day, I had to record myself again because I labelled the notes wrong and also I was missing the f note.

What Ukulele skills have you acquired? *
In this year’s music class, I learned a lot more about how to hold and strum on the ukulele. Sadly I did not learn how to play the half note on the ukulele adequately, so I will try to learn how to do it by the next ukulele summative. Another obstacle for me was that I couldn’t play the ukulele fast because my fingers are not agile enough to go on the correct key on time. In the end, I still learned a lot more about how to play the ukulele than last year. Since this year we learned how puck the ukulele and not just strum.

How did you decide your tempo to match your song and style? *
I choose my tempo to be 67 beats per minute because the song “Up On The House Top” to me sounds like something that you could either play very fast or very slow, so I choose something slower to make the song have more impact because I think that it makes every word seem more defined. At the same time make the beat slower would allow me to have a simpler time recording the entire song. Which in the end proved useless because I just copied and pasted.
How did you use the editing tools in Garageband? Editing, cutting, flex-time, trimming… *
I used a lot of trimming, cutting and finally flex time, I used “trimming” to make the notes I recorded to be the best one I have, I did that by using flex time to make the note start just when it actually starts to minimise the chance of something being on the wrong beat time. I used a great deal of copy and pasting to perform the song on the correct beat because I only recorded each note 4 times, and then choosing the best one.
Discuss the recording process; did you have any concerns or issues? *
In my recording, I used copy and paste for the entire song except me singing. At the first day of recording, everything worked smoothly or so I thought. Later that week, while I was editing I noticed that I was missing the f note and me strumming, I also discovered that I confused two notes. That caused me to try recording in the next music class, the problem was that I was practising. Which caused me to not go into the line and so I could not record on that day except if I went outside, which I did. The problem of being outside was sometimes you could hear the wind in the recording, so I tried my best to get rid of that. I think I was able to get rid of most of the wind except some of the notes (G half note). Later that day I was recording myself sing but sometime I would not sing at the correct time. I did not know if I should have edited it or not because singing could change really easily if you move something a little more forward or back.

Science Structures and Forces

In the last couple of weeks, we learned what the difference in forces are and how designers have to build around that. So after we learned the basics so I found a partner who agreed with testing model buildings against strong winds. Our research questions were “How does changing a 25cm tall structure shape affect the structural stability to a 20 kilometre per hour wind?” At the start, we did not know what was the valid shape we could use so, in the end, we just choose. ICC, Shanghai World Finance Centre and finally Jeddah Tower. After choosing that we started building them to the correct hight after reading how aerodynamics could affect a building. We made them all 25cm tall and 100g heavy after making we tested it against a 20kph wind. Our testing concluded that Jeddah Tower was the best building by design. Which proved our prediction correct because we said that Jeddah tower will be the best because of its aerodynamic design which makes a phenomenon called “Wind Vortex Shedding” which just means it moves the wind to the side and not full force on the building. This makes the buildings nearby get even more wind. One time we did not tape something correctly so the building collapsed which makes us believe that you should not open a window. ICC just fell down every time because it does not have the ability to redirect the wind so it fell down. Shanghai tower had the same problem but one time it moved a little to the side so it could not fall down because the entire wind was being redirected.Image result for icc building

Service Day

At Friday the 16th of November, we went to Shek Ko beach to clean up the beach. There I learned how much garbage there is, there we picked up over 90 Kg of garbage 80% of that was just polystyrene(Styrofoam). It is normally not that heavy, but we there we found a lot of styrofoam. I learned how much garbage can be just found around Hong Kong Beaches.

I was challenged at how much we had to pick up, and finding out that all of the garbage was just on one beach alone. I also got challenged at picking the small pieces up and getting the larger pieces because they are normally very heavy and hard to carry.

I am interested in doing that again to help the world have less garbage on the beach and a lot more areas in Hong Kong and the world.

My Logo Design

My V.R video was about 38 seconds long and when I was making it I thought that I did the logo fit in well with the video. When I was making the V.R video, I thought I did the music for the video well. I also think that I did the video editing okay because most of the time the video and sound mix together.

Next time I should have made the video earlier because when I was making it, I had to rush to film the video because I made the video just before the midterm break. I also next time I should have read the instructions better because I forgot to do the step that makes the video become a V.R video. I also know that next time I should have made the logo, not a block because it looks stretched on the video.

Unitè 1 Parlez-vous français?

Factual: How can I use my knowledge of English to learn French?

French and English words can sometimes have the same spelling or wording, so we can guess what it means. For example, “le téléphone portable”. means portable telephone and we can guess what it means by its spelling alone.

How can I interduce myself in French?

I can introduce myself by sharing the following information.

  • Bonjour: Formal Hello
  • Salut: Unformal Hello
  • Je M’appelle: My Name
  • Mon Anniversaire: My Birthday
  • Comment ça va – My emotions
  • Quelle langues est-ce que tu parles: What Languages do you speak
  • Quelle age as-tu- I am 12 years old

Conceptual: How are languages linked to one another?

Languages are linked to each other by colonisations and roots. Languages also sometimes steal words from other languages. For example, le restaurant is French but is used in English.

Does Learning a new language make my mother tongue stronger?

It does not make the mother tongue stronger if you the language have some different grammar types.
