Guest speaker on natural disasters
Today all the grade 4 students went to the library pit so we could listen to the guest speaker Mr. Graeme Still to talk about his job and natural disasters. Mr. Graeme Still is a police officer that helps people stay safe when there is a natural disasters. He explained to us about three types of natural disasters. The first one was Typhoon, flood and landslides. He showed us a video about natural disasters and how they hurt people and how much there are really scary. He also told us about rules that we have to keep so we can stay safe for example he said never play with matches or lighters because it can cause a fire at home or anywhere or also don’t litter glass in the countryside because when the sun gets toward it because of its reflection it can cause a fire. Be careful when you are having a B.B. Q and always bring a bottled water so you can avoid possibilities of fighting fire. He talked about what kind of people can help us when there is a natural disaster. The police can help us, the fire brigade, the ambulance and the social welfare department can.
This topic is really fun and interesting to learn and discuss about. It was really fun.
Learning Buddies Spotlight Reflection
Today our grade 1 learning buddies had their spotlight performance in the LLAC. Our learning buddies’ spotlight performance was a little different from our spotlight because our learning buddies did their spotlight with other grade 1 classes mixed up so the three grade 1 classes did their spotlight together.
The thing that I liked about that performance was that all the students spoke in a big loud voice and they didn’t have to use the microphone. I could hear all of them talk really clearly.
The thing that I think they need to improve on is their transitioning because the transitioning was a little slow.
My learning buddy performed well, because he was showing a lot of enthusiasm for the whole time and I really enjoyed watching him perform.
The attitude that the learning buddies displayed was confidence because they were not frightened because it was a big audience they all spoke very clearly. The attribute that the learning buddies displayed was
communicator because they showed all their knowledge to the audience.
The different types of elements of performing arts and visual arts were that they sang, danced, they used puppets and props and paintings.
I really enjoyed the grade 1 spotlight it was really fun to watch our learning buddies perform.
HWOO Tuning in
This week we have been tuning into our new unit HWOO (How we organise ourselves) which means we are learning about natural disasters. The central idea is: People and Organizations can work together to prepare and respond to disasters. Mr. Grant told us to write things that we know about this central idea in our sketchbooks. In our sketchbooks we had to rename the central idea in our own words and also write the meaning of multiple words in the central idea. We also named different types of natural disasters like volcanoes, tornadoes earthquakes, tsunamis and other natural disasters. We also named different types of organizations like fire departments, ambulances, the police station and other types of organizations. We also drew diagrams and illustrations about these kinds of disasters. I know a lot of people have been looking forward to this unit and is very curious. I am also looking forward to it.
Coding ( Scratch )
For the past 2 Tuesdays we Ms. Fung came in our classroom and taught us about how to do coding using a program called Scratch. Scratch is a program that you can use for coding or other things. We created our own Tessellation using controls and commands on Scratch. There is a icon which is a cat and when you create a tessellation and press a green flag that makes the cat icon move the cat moves and it makes the tessellation that you created using the controls.
Ms. Fung posted 2 videos about how to create a tessellation. One of them was a square tessellation and the other one was a triangle tessellation. We get to choose what types of shapes and sizes we want for the tessellation. In order to make a tessellation you have to create and decide what the angle would be and also how many steps the cat icon will take and lastly how big or small the size would be.
I could create a tessellation 2 times and both of them turned out the way I wanted. Scratch drew both the tessellation perfectly. The most challenging part of this challenge was coding and creating the whole thing because we had to think a lot. I have learned how to code now.
I think coding is really fun and I am excited to do it again.
People Should Stop Being Racist
In my opinion, people should stop being racist because it involves making fun of other people’s appearance and skin colors.
First of all, racism could be an insult to the people who are getting teased. It could hurt the other person’s feelings. If you make fun of people with different types of skin colors you can make them feel insulted.
Secondly, if you insult people you can make them feel stressed. It can cause problems at home, and it can cause big problems with your family members and friends. You can make them feel not needed.
Sometimes, when you are being racist it’s not fair. Some schools don’t let other skin colored people to go to the same schools. So different skinned people are separated.
In conclusion, people should stop being racist because it involves a lot of stress and it’s not fair for others.
Yesterday on April 20th, we had visual arts with Ms. Lam.
Every week, when we go to visual arts we always inquire into different types of artists lives and their paintings. This time we were inquiring into an artist named Matisse. Matisse is born in southern France and had a passion in art and painting. When he was an adult he tried to paint and his paintings had always have vibrant colors and happy thoughts. A few years later sadly Matisse caught a disease and unfortunately he had to sit on a wheelchair but he would not give up so he started to get his scissors and start to make collages. Years later he became really famous and a lot of people admire his collages. We made our own collage and we had lots of options.
I learned that an artist never gives up until he comes to an end. I understand his feelings and understand his paintings and collages.
This learning engagement was really interesting and i really enjoyed making a collage of nature.
Our advertisement poster
This week we started get into groups and choose one of these topics : Money raised is a puppy saved, Vote for me and No more plastic in the Flower fair. My group did a poster about Money raised is a puppy saved. We tried to tell the audience about how some puppies are struggling in life. So we created a garage sale and we were trying to sell second hand books and toys. For our group are target audience was people who want to help the struggling puppies and puppy lovers. We tried to influence our audience by drawing lots of pictures and colours. I think our audience would now want to come to our garage sale to help us raise money to help the S.P.C.A. I really enjoyed created the poster with my group !
Today, we were finding out something about gravity on brainpop. Our central idea is: We develop knowledge about forces and motion through scientific inquiry. So when we went on brainpop we made another mind map about gravity. The video said that gravity is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. The first person who discovered gravity was a man named Isaac Newton. How he discovered was when he was reading a book under an apple tree and while he was reading his book an apple came down and landed on his head. After Newton discovered gravity Albert Einstein expanded Newton’s theory of gravity. Einstein’s theory of gravity was massive objects actually bend space and time. They say that Newton and Einstein are the first two people who discovered gravity. It’s really interesting.
