Weekly Reflection #4

The Hive

This week we went to the Hive (which is also called the innovation lab). the first time we went, Mr. Brodie made almond brittle while we recorded observations using the five senses. We also wrote questions related to the key concepts.

I wondered…

How did the sugar, butter and salt change colour and consistency? Why it smelled so good?

I learned…

how to make it.

I used…

to think eating bacon would be better than that.

Weekly Reflection #2

This week, we went to the library and read the Backpack story. It is about the history of backpacks.

We also went to PE and Mr Steiner Badminton rackets and birdies to practice. After, we learned how to take down the nets. Mr Brodie read a book called Shi-Shi-Etko. She is a girl living in Canada and loves nature. She is spending as much time as she can with her family, because the government wants children to go to boarding so that they learn to be “Canadian”. Her grandmother tell her to make a memory bag before she goes to not forget where she comes from. She puts things in her bag from nature, her grandma says “where ever you go, what ever you do, never forget who you are”. We made a memory bag like Shi-Shi-Etko.

In Performing Arts, We learned some of the basics of playing the ukulele like how to hold the instrument correctly, the parts of the ukulele and some of the notes.

Mr Brodie let us plan our own afternoon. We brainstormed the central idea. In Visual arts, we were given a popsicle stick to make letters, it was really fun.

Today, we brainstormed what the unit elements were.

“drum roll please”… PRESENTING Screenagers the Documentary

Hi there! Yesterday, 5th grade all the way to grade 9 were all at the LLAC/Theatre to watch a Documentary about kids growing up with electronics like phones, laptops and Ipads. In the video, there were some families who had problems with their children being addicted to their electronics, as well as taking them to school.

I knew that entertainment was different from our parents, But I didn’t know

The most Nutritious Day Ever!

Today, 5D was full of lessons about nutrition, body systems and plans connected to healthy eating.

First off, we went to a guest speaker in the library  pit, she was a nutritionist and talked about healthy eating. She said our bodies don’t need sugar at all! 95% of chronic disease is caused by our food choice, healthy food is natural with little processing. Micronutrients include protein, carbohydrates and fats. Processed foods are foods that have been altered in some way and are added with fats, sugar or salt to keep from going bad.

After, Ms Miller told us the day before CNY holiday, we would be going to the supermarket and buy ingredients to make what we think is a healthy meal. In class

My Digital Literacy Rubric

This LINK is a record to show how I am progressing with my digital literacy skills.

2018- First week back!

This week was the first day back from winter break, we started our new unit called Who We Are. The central idea is “throughout life people experience change for different reasons.” We did a lot of inquiring and learning about our body. We also learnt about topic sentences and how to find the topic and controlling ideas in sentences, paragraphs or articles.

I hope you had a great christmas and new year with your friends and family!

Field Trip to Asbury

On Friday, a few classes, including mine went to Asbury for a field trip. Asbury is an organisation that helps people that are living in subdivided homes in Hong Kong. When we got there, a man talked about subdivided homes, He new a lot about it because he was actually living in a industrial building. He said, there were no toilets and a space to cook his meals, so he ate outside and walked to public toilets. After that, we were in groups and had a instructor each to guide us where to go, to buy toilet paper and food and lead us to the apartments where the poor families lived. When we got to their home, we gave the mother all the stuff from the market. She was very thankful, we saw one of her children, he was a five year old boy that was playing a game on her phone. She had 3 more children who were at school, the home was very small.

My Peace Flag

Hi, this is my peace flag I made in Visual arts. I expressed my message, by shaping the branches into a peace symbol to represent hope in plants. the techniques I used are sewed on fabric and felt, tie dyed cloth, a hot glue gun, a sewing machine and fabric markers.
