How I can Improve my Home Learning

This year, I think I can improve my home learning by a lot. My goals for this year:
-being more organised

-thinking before I write

-do home learning on paper

I need to be more organised — Sometimes i put the start of something in the end and something that I did later than that in the start. I can also try and write neater because sometimes I want to hurry up and finish what i’m writing so then if I found something else out, I wouldn’t forget it.

Being organised is not only for the presentations of my homework, I also have to organise my things properly so that i remember where i put things — so that I know where I put everything and I won’t lose any of my home-learning books.

I need to think before I write — When I make mistakes, I try to erase as hard as i can (because I write very hard on the paper), and I eventually crumple the paper. This also relates to being organised — i need to think of where to put a paragraph and where not to, and I need to make sure that the sentence i’m writing makes sense.

Although I’m fast and better at typing than I am writing and drawing, I should do more of my home learning on paper. It looks nicer, and it would require less work to do — I wouldn’t have to paste it in my journal.

How I’m Going To Challenge Myself Next Week

This week, we have been working on math and we have been doing math activities — Visual representations, the meaning of constants and variables, divisibility rules, etc.

Most of the things in math i’ve been doing have been a little bit easy for me. Next time we do a math activity, I would want to try to challenge myself by using a different strategy to solve math problems. I might also try reading the harder things like reading the harder article, or trying the harder word problem.

When I was doing home learning, I also noticed that I’m doing the easier and more simple tasks. Next time, I think I should look for harder things to research about or just aim further (write more, more details, etc). So that i don’t cram anything on one day, I think i should do 2 hard ones that would take some time and 1 regular one that requires less amount of time. This is how i will challenge myself next week. 🙂

First Week Of Home Learning

REMEMBER

On the 3rd of September, we started home learning. There was a 3×3 grid, and each box had an activity (9 activities). Every week, we’ll have to do 3 pieces of home learning, but this week we only needed to do 2 pieces of home learning so that we learn to manage our time and learn to not cram it all on one day (Which I nearly did)

REVISE

One of the 2 activities I did was called “interests and passions”. It was an activity where you would have to interview 4 friends/family members about their interests and passions and what they’ve done to pursue their passion. I learned a lot about people’s passions, and they were more different than I thought.

My second activity that i chose was “Patterns” I had to describe a pattern to my parents and they had to recreate the pattern that I was describing. I did really well but I think i need to think more about it before I actually tell them the pattern, because we tried it 2-3 times, however, all of the patterns i described didn’t work.

REVEAL

I found the interests and passions activity harder, but I liked the patterns activity more. I liked it more because I didn’t have to do that much, and I enjoyed it more than the interests and passions activity.

REACT

Next time when I’m doing home learning, I think I should work more on managing my time. I had a lot of after school activities this week and forgot about my home learning. I quickly did a reflection on the computer on Friday night (Which took about 3 minutes). I did well on my home learning but i should improve on my time management.

Second Week Of Math

Remember

On August 27th (Monday), we have started learning about math. In grade 5 we’ve been learning about patterns and shapes and mostly number patterns. We’ve been coming back to it and we’re learning more about number patterns. We also took a pre assessment to tell our teacher what we know how to do and what we don’t know how to do. It’s just a prior-knowledge test.

Revise

Before we started doing math, we did a practice on math. It made me remember what a table of value was, and I think i’ve improved on showing values and terms on that table.

When we were doing the activities, I learned about brain paths and how people learn math and other subjects. It was also interesting to learn about what other people want people to say to their them and what they don’t want people to say to them. I’ve learned about patterns and some unique ones that I never thought of before. It also brought me back to thinking about prime numbers.

Reveal

I think the most important thing i learned about while doing this was learning about the brain paths. I never knew how the brain worked and what would happen if you learned a new word. Since we learned about puberty last year, we would have found out about brain paths but when I was researching, I didn’t see anything about brain paths. The video we watched told us about how you learn math.

React

Now that i’ve seen different and unique patterns, how the brain works, and how people want other people to talk to them while doing math, I think i’m going to try and watch my words before I talk, and try to be more creative with patterns.

Reflection Of The Week (First Week At School)

On Monday (The 20th of August), we started school. I thought that grade 6 would be quite hard because of the PYP Exhibition and also the Young Americans. I don’t like performing and i’m quite shy. I have a few friends here and there’s also some people from last year. I felt bad for one of our friends that’s not in our class because she’s by herself.

I think our schedule on Tuesday is very tiring. I asked my mom to change my schedules for Tuesday (Which I had swimming on) so that I would be more comfortable (Since we have to walk up around 50 flights of stairs). Other than that I think our schedule is quite normal and around the same as last year.

I’m not so excited for grade 6 or high school because this year we have longer camps, and last year I got really homesick and I cried just a little bit. In grade 7 we’d be starting Experience Week and going to different countries (Or staying in Hong Kong and hiking — Even if I like hiking but I think hiking is a bit boring).

Chinese is okay this year but i’m just a bit annoyed of going to the CCC. I’ve never been there for Chinese classes. I think one day i’ll get used to it but I still would always find it annoying walking through the grade 5 hallway and having to walk up all those stairs instead of walking to the classroom next door (In short words I’m too lazy and need to be more active)

Even if it was the start of the school year, I think I’ve met a lot of the class and I got to know them a little bit better before the first 2 weeks of school, and there aren’t that many new people. I got a little bit confused on who was who but now I think I’m ok.

I think we’ve also been doing good on changing our schedule because we are starting morning meetings and been playing some activities and we have been planning for some team building activities, but we also definitely need to work on listening to instructions and following them.

My week so far has been good it’s just that Tuesday is a bit tiring and I’m glad I got to change my after school activities to different days.

How Do People Find Atoms?

How Do People Find Atoms?

Recently in class (Somewhere around May 15), we were learning about atoms. We watched a BrainPop video and we had to write 3 things I found out, 2 interesting things I found about atoms, and 1 question. My question was how do people find atoms? I used some links to find an answer to my question:

*Motherboard(https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/8qxe7z/this-microscope-can-see-down-to-individual-atoms)

*HowStuffWorks (https://science.howstuffworks.com/atom10.htm)

*BrainPop (https://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/atoms/)

The 3 thinks I found out was: Democritus called atoms atoms from the greek word atomos. I also heard that atoms are made of protons, neutrons and electrons. Neutrons have no electrical charges, while protons have positive electrical charge, and the periodic table of elements; all the items/things displayed on there are all made of atoms!

There were 2 things I found interesting: The density of nucleus is the size of 6.2 billion cars. I also wrote that the center of atoms were made out of protons, neutrons and electrons. The nucleus is stuck together by strong forces.

Atoms are very small things (smaller than dust) that are found almost everywhere! It’s impossible to see an atom with a light microscope, but in 1981, somebody invented something called a scanning tunneling microscope. You can also call it STM. Using a scanning tunneling microscope, it’s now possible to see atoms.

Soon after that, in the UK, SuperSTEM Facility made an electron microscope. Just like the scanning tunneling microscope, you can also see atoms; you can also see atomic columns (A photo of atomic columns ^^^ go up). You can see them because the electron microscope uses beams of electrons instead of photons. Photons have a longer wavelength than electrons, which means electrons have short wavelengths. Therefore it’s more useful to use electrons. You can see closer and zoom into stuff more than before.

Science in the 20th century showed the structure of an atom. They found out that the structure of the nucleus and the forces hold the atom together.

People and scientists from around the world are also trying to find another way to be able to spot maybe smaller things than atoms.

Writing ~ Home Learning

For home learning, I chose to inquire onto wheels. I decided to write about wheels because i think it made a big impact on everyone’s lives; convenient, it helped invent pottery, etc. I used many different sources to find my info like:

*Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel)

*Smithsonian (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/a-salute-to-the-wheel-31805121/)

*Ancient Origins (http://www.ancient-origins.net/ancient-technology/revolutionary-invention-wheel-001713)

*autoevolution (https://www.autoevolution.com/news/history-of-the-wheel-7334.html)

I found out that the wheel originated from Mesopotamia, and it was made in the Roman Empire (3500 BC). People didn’t have as good materials as they do now so the wheels were made out of wood, stone, and a little bit of metal.

There are many positives of the old wheel, and the new wheel. I decided to write about the old wheel since there are many differences between them. I wrote that it works, it helped invent pottery (Pottery wheel), and it inspired people to create fun things like ferris wheels. It also helped invent fun things for pets like hamster wheels!

There are not many negatives of the old wheel. I couldn’t find or think of anything else, so I wrote that it could cause deforestation (Because of cutting down trees and most vehicles need 4/2 wheels.) and relating to that, it would waste some materials.

The first vehicle was a chariot. In 3500 BC, the wheel wasn’t used like regular wheels like how we use them today. They were first served as a potter’s wheel (Pottery). In 3200 BC, people finally got the idea to use the wheel to transport people around the place. They were used by the army for hunting, and racing, and of course transportation. The people that were involved was the army, the Europeans (They are one of the first to make the wheel), the Egyptians (They were also one of the first to make the wheel).

The wheel helped inspire people and inventors to make something more of the wheel, like ferris wheels and water wheels. It helps many people in many ways and makes our lives even easier.

My Role As A 5A Student

In class, we were thinking about our roles as a 5A student. We came up with 5 key things that would make the best classroom and we wrote them down on sticky notes. I wrote: 1. Be Positive, 2. Talk in a normal tone, 3. Be cooperative, 4. Stay on task, and 5. Follow instructions.

I wrote be positive because I think that if people kept saying negative things, it probably would start arguments and we’d get nothing done. I think that I could contribute to this and I can do it by thinking more about the positives than the negatives.

The next thing I wrote was talk in a normal tone because people outside (In the hallway) were talking really loud and nearly shouting and it distracted us. Sometimes we’ve heard them run by  our classroom and say weird things and made some people in our class laugh. Sometimes when my classmates are outside we can hear them from far away. I think I can contribute to this by: When seeing my friends are talking too loud and try to make them talk in a lower tone.

After that I wrote be cooperative. We should be more cooperative because sometimes people are working too slow, so then we should help them so then we don’t take too long. Our assembly is next/the week after next week and I think we should definitely be cooperative.

I wrote stay on task because if we don’t stay on task, nothing would be gotten done. It’s like being positive but more important. Staying on task means that you’re not gaming and playing games or listening to music on the computer when the teacher isn’t watching. If we stay off task, we’ll get too carried away and forget what to do. I can contribute to this ← by telling anyone that’s off task to get back on task so we could finish faster and get maybe free time at the end of what we’re doing.

The last thing I wrote was follow instructions. We should also ask questions about the instructions so that we don’t get mixed up and maybe have to start again. If we follow instructions, our classroom will be functioning much quicker. I can contribute to this by ← correcting anyone I see not following instructions – doing the wrong thing.

I believe if we follow all those things ^, we’ll be a better functioning class :).

Artist in Residence Project

The Artist in Residence project is a project where we have to split into groups consisting of  5 people. We had to design something more than a dress, shirt and pants. We needed to use unique fabrics and try to not use cloth, because that’s what nearly every dress is made out of. Our dressed needed to be LIFESIZE! Our group is using a garbage bag(Where you put all your garbage in and throw it away), it’s a unique fabric explaining that you shouldn’t treat your body like garbage. The Artist In Residence project is raising a charity for kids4kids. CDNIS is selling tickets for our show and the money goes to that charity. Our grade (Maybe grade 4, i’ve heard about it but I don’t know) is hosting a fashion show.

Our product is a dress which represents that people should eat more nutritious food. People need to eat nutritious food because it benefits your health, and the brain. Not eating enough nutritious foods, can give you stress, you can get sleepier than normal, and nutrition gives us energy to work. It’s just like breakfast, but if you walk around you might fall over. You might also get ill, like having a heart disease or a stroke. It is a serious risk and you wouldn’t want that to happen to you. So eat nutrients!

Sometimes when you grow older, you won’t really care about eating too much junk, and you would probably like it less. You would probably go to a club and eat donuts all day but that’s not good for you. It’s just like peer pressure, you want people to like you so you do whatever is a trend or anything like that. You probably eat more pizza, because everyone does, but that’s not good for your body. You shouldn’t eat too much protein without any vitamins. Just protein is just like sugar and it affects your health. This is why nutritious food is good to eat.

I think our group’s efforts were good, but we were a bit slow with creativity. The dress was too simple, so we changed it. I think we did pretty good for organization and cooperation because we worked together to know what we were doing. We seperated the jobs evenly so that we all got to do something or bring something. We did good on cooperation, but sometimes we went  too off task. We are in a good spot and I think we will have enough time to finish our Artist In Residence project. I think we could be a little more open minded and be more creative, we need to be open minded because neither of us wanted to be the model.

HWOO (How We Organise Ourselves)

HWOO (How We Organise Ourselves)

On the start of November, we started a new unit called How we Organise Ourselves. The central idea was: “Being organised empowers us to take action more effectively.”. The way an organization empowers itself effectively is by having leaders and lots of workers.

The reason why companies/organisations need to be organised is because not everyone can lead a company. People may have different perspectives of things and there may be many arguments. Workers also can have different opinions. Many people have different opinions of things, so the leader can decide what to do.

We learned all the leaders that you could be: Visionaries, Doers, Reasoners and bridge builders. Out of all the leaders I could have been, I chose that I would be a bridge-builder. A build bridger’s talents are having compassion, having communication skills, oratory skills and listening skills. The task of bridge builders is that they have to hold team meetings, give pep talks, manage things, and get people to calm down and get people to meditate.

We got a piece of paper, there were a bunch of gifts on there such as being a good listener, having physical strength, bilingual, being a good writer, a speaker, outgoing, athletic, musical, and artistic. Out of all of those gifts, I think I am a good listener and a good writer. I think I’m a good listener because I think I can help my friends through difficult times. I think I am a good writer because I can hurriedly draft/write letters to people (Especially on computers!).

The way an organisation’s form empowers it to function properly is that an organisation can have good people (There are executives, board of directors, etc). They can also have people that have the most/good experienced workers. The way the company decides decisions, is by having the executives and the board of directors decide decisions. The good people can make the company/Organisation function really well. We have been recently working on something called TwoPresents. TwoPresents is an organisation that connects with many different charities. They ask people to contribute by giving gifts for many different charities. Their mission is to reduce plastic waste.

My group for TwoPresents is the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital. We organised by starting with a plan of a board game Then we tried it on google drawings. The person from TwoPresents said our game was a very creative board game. I think it will be effective because it will make patients that are in the hospital less bored. It might also be able to reduce stress, and get your mind off of being scared (if you are). The people who are contributing are the TwoPresents people, and students. I think our group is good and we have done a successful job of contributing to TwoPresents.
