Today was the Gr.6 spotlight performance as part of the LS Festival of the Arts. Us, grade sixes had to chose an instrument in the beginning of the year, about September. The instruments include, clarinet (I have chosen it), percussion: xylophone, cymbal and drums, flutes, bass guitars, trumpets, saxophones, euphoniums and trombones. We learnt different songs throughout the year and the performance was like a showcase of the skills in music we’ve learnt in the past year. We did 2 performance in total. For each of the performance, we performed a total of 9 songs, in 40 mins, which required a lot of concentration and effort behind it to make it happen.
It was a really great experience for me, especially for doing a solo of the variations on Ode to Joy and joining the special band (performing an extra of 2 songs). When doing my solo, I was really nervous and not confident when facing teachers, other lower school students and parents. In the first show, I was so afraid that I was going to mess up everything and got the order wrong, but after all I thought I did really well and I kept all my nervousness down. On the second show, I was much more confident and I thought that I performed even better. My mom said that she was really proud of me after the show. This band performance was a very memorable experience that I think I wouldn’t forget, I’m really proud of my achievements.
Here are some photos of the performance:

Today is the last day of ISTA, time pasted so fast! In the morning, we started off with 2 games in our ensembles and had a chat together to share our favorite things in the whole festival or give someone a compliment. Afterwards, we performed our skits from yesterday having all the lights off in the classroom and using colorful- lighted torches to make our acts stand out. Later, we used the idea of museums and all of us had to contribute something to the museum, this was also a part of the sharing in the afternoon with our parents. Me and Charlotte created a colorful collage of posted notes, in each posted note, we wrote different opinion’s of students and teachers of the sentence “If someone did_____________ (for me), they would be my superhero.” (The same sentence from yesterday’s post) .
We also got our very own ISTA T-shirt and we all changed into it. All of our shirts were a little too big, because we didn’t know our accurate sizes;some of them were like skirts instead of shirts.
This afternoon, we shared all our hard work from these few days to our parents. The whole grade performed something different, our group/ensemble did the museum presentation and a power routine that our ISTA Artist taught us. Other performances were AMAZING and entertaining, but ours are pretty short and serious, but I think it was the most unique one out of the other performances.
Overall, I thought the whole ISTA Festival was a unforgettable experience for me. It made me think about myself deeply. We also had fun when learning about the different performing arts skills. I enjoyed and loved most parts of the festival.
As you may know, the grade 6 has the ISTA Festival (Please view previous blog post for more information about the organization) and today is the 2nd day!!! Today was far better than yesterday. First, in our ensembles, we brainstormed ideas about superheroes and practice transforming our ideas into skits and acts. We also thought about this sentence “If someone did_____________ (for me), they would be my superhero.” I wrote that if someone stood up for me and someone helped me out when I was struggling really badly, that person would definitely be my hero. We also played a few different games like yesterday and I enjoyed it as well.
In the afternoon, we had different workshop activities(e.g. Juggling, Stage Fighting, Movement and Music, Revolution, Story telling and Singing). I participated in the Juggling and the Movement and Music one. It was a FASCINATING experience, the ISTA artists were hilarious, and I learnt how to spin plates, creating different movements and dances with chairs in groups (with different students from different classes in the grade) and changing our movements somehow to match the mood of the music. (e.g. Latin, Ballet and Country)
Tomorrow, we are going to perform on stage and showing what we’ve achieved/learnt for the past few few days to our parents, teachers and other students. We are also going to get our very own ISTA T-shirts! I am so excited, I can’t wait!
ISTA is an organization that come from UK which mainly focus on theatre and performing arts. They value “diversity and collaboration, celebration and play, friendship and collegiality.”
For today, tomorrow and Wednesday, we will be working with the ISTA team. Today, we started off by learning some rules and regulations of the whole programme. Afterwards, we went into different groups with students from different classes in the grade and we have an ISTA artist leading us. In the morning, we started off with introductions, playing a couple of fun group games and an overview of what we are going to do for the next 3 days. Our theme for this festival is SUPER HEROS. Throughout the day, we collaborated together in smaller groups to brainstorm ideas of superpowers that a superhero has, coming up with stories and scenes from different ideas, presenting our work to the group and understanding more about the different elements of performing arts.
At first, I was pretty nervous and confused, but later on the day, I was enjoying myself and felt really excited as we’re building up and making our performances. Today I learn more on how to be able to collaborate and cooperate with others in group activities, making our creative ideas into actions and discovers some elements of performing arts(drama, signing, acting etc.)
