This year in music we have done a lot of interesting stuff. I found this year’s music a bit different compared to last year. As last year, we would just learn to play and perform. However this year we worked on other things such as Composing, Performing and theory. Although we had to learn a lot of new things and acquire new skills I think I did pretty well and had defiantly improved on them especially in composing.
-Note accuracy, Rhythm accuracy, Articulation precision, Dynamics, Tone quality, Intonation
, Tempo appropriateness, Connection.

While Preforming and composting we would need to use a lot of these skills. While performing I had to have note accuracy which was also quite similar to Tone quality and play the correct notes or else it wouldn’t sound like the Piece. I didn’t have as much trouble on this part as last year we already worked a lot on playing our notes, however, some new notes such as A as last year we only did A flat. I would sometimes mix them up. I got over this by labelling whether it was a sharp or flat of the notes in the piece.

Another important aspect was Rhythm accuracy. This time, the song we had to compose (Blues down under solo) the song we had to compose had to sound bluesy. As I was composing I found out that it wasn’t actually all by what you composed it to make it sound bluesy it was also about rhythm accuracy. While playing, of course, composing you would need to add those swings and rests. But what was most important was while playing you’d know how to stop and keep up with the beat having the correct rhythm. Still while composing I would still need to make more Rythm variety and swings otherwise even if I played if perfectly it still wouldn’t sound bluesy. Here is an example…


(That was my original blues down under solo) since it was from the computer it was played perfect, however as the piece didn’t have many swings and variety of bluesy notes it still sounded a bit classical than blues.

Other than that another main aspect is Articulation precision to make sure the notes are clear and precise. I found out the better my poster the better Articulation precision I’d have. What makes a good posture?; straight back, shoulders up, legs NOT crossed, Feet on the floor, arms holding flute at the right height. While having to perform in our playing test I did this which I believed help as my notes sound way clearer than when I just started playing the piece that we were given.

Nextly while performing we would need to use Dynamics. Just like how normally “piano” is pronounced the Italian way (“pi-AH-no”). Where the “Ah” is emphasised. In music, certain songs are also like this. where example in “Smoke in the water” the beginning starts out with a soft much smaller melody but then it the middle the dynamics changes as it becomes louder. By doing this it gives the song more expression and taste.

Other than that another thing we used was Intonation, Where while playing I would need to twist my flute in the correct angle so the note sounded the pitch I wanted. Also Depending on how hard I blow the flute hole the higher or lower and differents sound it makes.

 Tempo appropriateness Is also used so while playing in the playing test I would need to make sure I’m keeping up with the tempo as especially in that song the tempo is really fast and If I don’t keep in time the sound wouldn’t sound the same. One thing I did to help me practice for that Is I’d practice playing with the backing (Which was the speed I needed to play in) Then I would use quick time player and record how I sounded like. I would then listen to my recording and see which parts I needed to improve on or if I was a little off and I would go and practice that section.

Lastly, there is Connection and flow as I’d say. While playing or even composing I would need to make sure the note sounded well connected and fit together. This means I wouldn’t have any abrupt pauses or odd sounding notes that didn’t seem to match together example a C and a D (In my opinion.) To make sure my notes flowed I would write a bit then play it to see how it sounded. One thing I found that actually made notes sound really connected was when I used repetition while composing. The example I make my first verse this melody and I can also make my third verse the same basic melody except with a small note change or swing to give it some variety. Also not only does the reception help with the songs flow but it also makes it more memorable to the people as they can grasp onto a specific melody to remember.

Theory test:

We just had our theory test a few weeks ago. I certainly have improved more on this test than my last test. As throughout the year we learnt more about theory, therefore, I had more knowledge. I needed to remember how to find notes that I needed such as when I had to find the tone below or above. Some things that helped me while studying was making a study note sheet. Which I organised in each section including the beats, Semitones and tones above and below and more.

One problem I think I had the most trouble with was the beats because it dealt with numbers and fraction. (However now I think back It actually wasn’t that hard.)

One part I think did well on was probably drawing the stems up. As when a is higher than the line where the treble clef rests you needed to make the notes stem to go down. And when a note is lower you need to make the note stem go up. I thought I foud this part quite easy as once you got to know the rule there nothing that you can really go wrong unless you confuse the lines which are fairly unlikely.

I also found having to find sharps quite easy too as for finding a sharp you need to go find the note below it and everything else below it. It’s written from the order above. Example: D sharp. Is FCD

In conclusion, although I’ll admit theory isn’t exactly my best subject I still learnt a lot that I didn’t know before, and by knowing how to recognize and use the notes It will defiantly effect and help my playing and compose in the future as I understand how the notes and structures of songs are made.

 Overall conclusion: This term I defiantly felt I have improved a lot. I had took some risks by trying different ways when composing, and inquiring when learning theory and practicing for the playing test. In the end I’d say I enjoyed music this term and i’m really excited for next year!
