Chinese Language A Language & Literature : Standard Level: LKADU2 & HSC4M

The Mandarin Language and Literature course is offered at both Higher and Standard Levels. This course gives students the opportunity to explore how language develops in specific cultural contexts. Students also have to consider the way language is used in the media. Through the studying of literary texts, students are able to consider the relationship of literature to issues at large such as gender, power, and identity. Close reading is considered to be a core skill in the understanding and interpretation of literature.

Higher Level: Texts are chosen from a variety of non-literary sources, genre, and media. Sutdents will study 3 literature texts, one of which is a text in translation chosen from the Prescribed literature in translation list (PLT) and one of which is a text from the Prescribed book list for the language studied (PBL). The other may be chosen freely. Students will also study 3 critical study texts, which are chosen from the prescribed booklist (PBL) for the language studied.

Standard Level: Texts are chosen from a variety of non-literary sources, genre, and media. Students will study 2 texts, one of which is a text in translation from the PLT and one, written in the language A studied, from the PBL chosen freely. Students will also study 2 critical study texts,  both of which are chosen from the prescribed booklist (PBL) for the language studied.

Prerequisite: Native-speaking Chinese students with competence in Chinese literature
