eBooks! Get Your eBooks! OverDrive Now at the CDNIS Junior Library

The library is happy to announce that e-books are now available! Woo hoo! You don’t have to have an e-reader, you can read on your phone, iPad, tablet, laptop or desktop.

Benefits – You can check out and read books over the weekends, vacations and during the summer! In fact you can check out and read a book from anywhere in the world with Internet access. How great is that?!? We can order books and get them immediately – no shipping required!

Limitations – Unfortunately some e-book features that are available in North America are not available in Hong Kong at this time. For example, some popular books are not available for purchase in Asia. So if you’re wondering why we don’t have a specific title, that could be the reason. The publisher decides which countries have rights, so it’s out of our control. Also, e-books are only available for Kindle Fire and Kindle HD, not Kindle Paperwhite or the regular Kindle. This is a huge disappointment for all libraries outside North America. We hope that they remedy this situation in the near future.

How Does it Work? – The library buys e-books and you check them out and read them on your device! Simple as that! When the due date arrives, the book will disappear off your device. No overdues!

CDNIS Digital Library in OverDrive.

OverDrive: Go to the CDNIS Digital Library. Your username and password are your student ID number. To change your password, see me (Ms. Williams) in the library or e-mail me (colleenwilliams@cdnis.edu.hk) with your new password. There is no private information in your account. In fact the only thing in your account is your username. That’s it. Your actual name isn’t even in your account! They do that for security reasons. Anywho…go to CDNIS Digital Library, login and start browsing.

When you find a book you like, click on the title.

You can check out a sample of the book or you can borrow the book. You have 2 borrowing options – read in browser or download. If you download it, you can read it while you’re offline, which is great for the plane, car, etc. Once a book is downloaded, it can’t be returned early. If you read a book in your browser, you can return the title before the due date.

If you have an iPad, Kindle Fire or HD, iPhone or Android phone you can download the OverDrive App. You’ll have to create your own login for the OverDrive App – use whatever you’ll remember. Next, you have to find the CDNIS library. Once you go to the digital library, that’s when you use your student number for your username and password. To see the books you’ve borrowed, go to your Bookshelf. The app works with iPhones, Android and Windows phones, Kindle Fire and HD and Nook HD/HD+.

Right now OverDrive only has fiction titles for grades 3-8. We’ll see how things go and expand as necessary. Let me know what you think or if you need help. Just send me an email (colleenwilliams@cdnis.edu.hk) and I’ll do my best to troubleshoot any problems. It’s pretty straightforward.

Happy  e-reading!
