Farewell to Prep!

Enjoying our final visit with our Grade 6 buddies by making beautiful origami!

Thank you for a fantastic year in Prep, parents! It has been an absolute pleasure teaching your little ones this year and getting to know your families. You all have made my transition to Hong Kong and CDNIS a smooth and enjoyable experience. I am forever grateful for your support. Wishing you all safe and happy travels this summer! I will be leaving to climb Mount Kilimanjaro tonight–wish me luck!

A note on the Blog: Thank you for subscribing to my website this year, as we are closing this academic year and getting ready for the new school term, I recommend you unsubscribe from my website so that you won’t receive updates intended for next year’s class.  Please follow these steps to unsubscribe to a teacher’s website. I highly recommend you subscribe to your child’s new teachers’ sites next school year.

Thanks for your attention.

Singing our hearts out at the Prep Year End Assembly!

Good afternoon parents! Can you believe this is our last Friday of Prep?! What a wonderful year it has been! We enjoyed a full week of festivities, celebrations, and learning about Grade 1 this week. Thank you to all the parents for coming and joining in our celebrations! I appreciate your constant support and contributions.

Portfolios:  Your child should arrive home today with their completed Portfolio! Please enjoy looking through the Portfolios with your child and reviewing their learning journey throughout the year. They were so thrilled to take them home and learn they did not have to return them! We are so proud of their efforts all year. 🙂

Class Books Returned:  Please ensure that all classroom books borrowed are returned next week. Sadly, our at home reading program/book borrowing will come to an end next week. I have loved watching the children grow and blossom as readers this year! I hope they continue to read daily throughout the summer, on their own, together with an adult, and listening to read aloud stories. This will ensure a smooth transition to Grade 1 next year.

Thank You:  Another HUGE thank you to our class moms, Amanda, Stephanie and Rachel for organising a fantastic end of year class celebration. We all had a wonderful time celebrating a great year together! I also am overwhelmed by your generosity and so incredibly appreciative of the gift you gave. Miss Marcia and I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks! I look forward to some relaxation this summer. 🙂

End of Year Slide Show: Please check here for the slide shows presented at the Prep End of Year Celebration. What fun to see the Prep students learn and grow throughout the school year! (If you have difficulty accessing the Google Drive-let me know so I can adjust the settings or share it separately. Thanks!)

Practising for our End of Year Performance!

Good afternoon parents! The weekend is upon us! The excitement of upcoming summer break is definitely in the air! We have had another full and exciting week of learning and growing in Prep. Please read on for a very brief blog posting of information this week.

Unit of Inquiry: We have continued to explore our unit of Where We are in Place and Time this week by delving into the world of literature and making connections through a variety of stories. The children have also enjoyed researching many innovators from the past. We have started our summative assessment of the unit this week, which you can look for when the portfolios come home next week.

End of Year Celebration: We look forward to celebrating a successful year in Prep with you on Wednesday, May 31st. We will begin our celebration by attending the presentation in the LLAC from 8:00-9:00. Directly following this performance, Prep D will celebrate as a class in our classroom. We will have some light snacks and have some presentations to make for the students as well. We invite all parents to attend! Please stay tuned for further information or specifics from our lovely class mothers.

Thank you: A huge thank you to our final mystery reader, Nelson Cheung. The students enjoyed having you hear and learning some valuable lessons through your excellent book choices! I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the parent mystery readers who have volunteered their time to come in this year. The students truly value this time!!

Good afternoon parents! We have enjoyed another fun-filled week in Prep; from Sports Day, to birthday celebrations, to time with our Grade 6 buddies. I am so impressed with how hard the children are working to show kindness, gratitude, and respect, even in these last few weeks of school. We have been adding a lot of selfless acts to our class kindness jar! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and look forward to seeing your little ones on Monday.

Unit of Inquiry: As a reminder, please check the current UOI Parent Letter here to learn in detail what we will be focussing on for the remainder of the school year in this Unit of Where We Are in Place and Time. We have enjoyed exploring the topic of innovation more and discussing why we need to innovate and how change affects our lives. The students are remarkably interested in learning about the past and our research has ranged from the Ancient Egyptians to impressionist artists; each with their own innovations!

Prep Sports Day: What a fun Sports Day on Wednesday we enjoyed! A huge thank you to our parent volunteers Stephanie So, Lisa Miller, Tia Moore, Pam Ku, Karen Chan, and Mukta Negi for volunteering to help us on this day. The students enjoyed the friendly competition and active games. We were certainly tired out that afternoon!

Thank you: A huge thank you to our Mystery Reader, Lisa Miller this week! We appreciate you taking the time to come in and read to the students. I cannot believe we only have one more Mystery Reader for the school year! The students definitely cherish this time.

iPad Apps for Summer:  Please refer to a small sticker in the inside front cover of your child’s pink communication book. This contains 3 iPad apps and passwords that are wonderful resources for reading and learning. I encourage you to use BrainPop Junior, Tumble Books, and PebbleGo over the summer with your child if you can. The students are all familiar with how to navigate these apps and really enjoying reading and learning through them! Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this.

A Message from ChineseTeachers: Also attached in the inside front cover of your child’s pink communication book, you will find a note from our Chinese Teachers concerning your child’s placement for Chinese class next year. Please refer to that and direct your questions to the Chinese teachers if you have further queries.

Presenting at our Assembly!

Good afternoon parents! A huge thank you for taking the time to attend our assembly this afternoon! The students have been working really hard over the last few weeks to prepare this. They were bursting with excitement to present and were very proud of their performances after. It certainly takes a lot of courage to perform in front of such a large crowd…at such a young age! Very fun to have the parent volunteers involved in the performance as well. 🙂 Thank you for your continual support as we helped prepare for this. It is hard to believe that we now have less than 4 weeks of school left!

Our Star Student of the Week presenting to the class.

A week full of Holidays and fun!

IMG_9705

Happy Friday!!

Good afternoon parents! I hope that you have enjoyed this week that has been sprinkled with holidays throughout. We have been as busy as ever in Prep D during these few days of school. There will not be a lot of new information in today’s posting, as most of it still remains true for this upcoming week and serves as a good reminder. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! I will be paddling with the CDNIS dragon boating team during the Stanley warm-up races on Saturday. Wish us luck!

Unit of Inquiry: We have continued our Unit of Where We are in Place and Time, focusing on the central idea of The way we live can change over time. Preparing for our assembly has been a perfect gateway into this topic. The students are researching and exploring how Hong Kong has changed over the years, in regards to transportation, buildings, food, and clothing. We will be looking more into timelines and how things have changed throughout time in sequential order next week. We will also begin to look into innovation and the reason things change.

As a reminder, we also have our first artefact for our class museum! Please feel free to send in more items from the past, along with an explanation, so we can display in our class museum.
Thank you: Thank you to Karen Chan for being our Mystery Reader this week! The students enjoyed the plethora of books you read and were enthralled the entire story time. It is our favourite time of day!

Prep Assembly: Prep D looks forward to sharing what they are learning about during our Assembly on May 12th. The students are really excited about creating their assembly and learning new songs! The students should have brought their lines home to practice, so please do let me know if you have not seen these. They will be able to read from the paper, so no need to memorise. I look forward to seeing you all on Friday!

Prep Field Trip: In connection to our current UOI, the students will be going on a field trip to the Museum of History on May 8th. Thank you for everyone who volunteered to join us! I look forward to seeing you on Monday morning. It should be a day full of fun and authentic learning experiences!

Good afternoon parents! Thank you so much to all of you for attending our Student Led Learning Reviews today! I absolutely loved watching the children lead you through their journey of learning thus far in the school year. I hope that you enjoyed learning from your child and seeing how their independence and confidence has grown! I wish you all a restful and enjoyable long weekend; I look forward to seeing everyone next week.

We look forward to further exploration in the upcoming weeks!

Thank you for those of you who have turned in your family trees. The students have loved sharing about their families and they are now proudly displayed in our classroom. We encourage you to turn in your family trees if you so desire!

We also have our first artefact for our class museum! Please feel free to send in more items from the past, along with an explanation, so we can display in our class museum.
Thank you: A huge thank you to Azmar Sukandar for sharing some amazing animal puzzles to help us learn about how we can protect animals who are in harm’s way. The students really took this lesson to heart for Earth Week!

Prep Assembly: Prep D looks forward to sharing what they are learning about during our Assembly on May 12th. The students are really excited about creating their assembly and learning new songs! I will be sending some lines home for the students to practice next week (their own words)…so please look for these!

Prep Field Trip: In connection to our current UOI, the students will be going on a field trip to the Museum of History on May 8th. Thank you for everyone who volunteered to join us! I will send an email to the parent volunteers next week with further details. Looking forward to this learning experience!

Prep Sports Day: We will be enjoying our Prep Sports Day on May 17th and will be sending home a form with further information on May 2nd. Please look for this information soon, as we will require parent volunteers to help us run our centres. This form will be due on May 5th.

CIS/WASC Parent Survey: Thank you to all of the parents that have already completed the Endicott Survey. This 15 minute online survey is a valuable way for parents to share their perspective on many different aspects of our school. Your feedback provides an opportunity to identify areas that are strengths of CDNIS and where we can improve. While both parents are welcome to take the survey, we ask that at least one parent per household participate in the survey which will be open until Wednesday, May 3. You may find the survey at www.endicottresearchcenter.net  and the code is CNP2017205. For more information, please see the letter sent by Jon Adams last week. If you have any questions about the CIS/WASC Accreditation process, please email Jon Adams.

Message from Performing Arts:

Due to overwhelming responses, we have opened one more date for the Peter Pan Broadway Production , supported by AmCham on May 13th(Sat)! Students aged 5+ are welcome to join for a once in a lifetime experience this summer!

Our teacher for the day reading a book to the class. 🙂

Good afternoon parents! I hope you all had wonderful breaks full of travel, fun, and the perfect amount of rest. I have enjoyed seeing some pictures and hearing stories of adventures over break. Although a short week, we have been busy preparing for student led learning reviews and jumping head first into our final Unit of Inquiry!

Unit of Inquiry: We have started our final unit of the year Where We are in Place and Time, focusing on the central idea of The way we live can change over time. We began exploring the concept by thinking about the past, present, and future of our own lives. The students did some brainstorming and came up with some great ideas for this! We also began viewing older pictures of Hong Kong; the students are fascinated with this city’s past! I look forward to delving further into these topics next week.

We are asking from every child if possible:
•We would like every child to make a family tree at home to share with the class. I have sent this home today in zipper pouches to return a week later. It will require you to collect pictures of your child, their parents and grandparents (siblings, aunts, uncles etc not required) to stick on the graphic organiserWe appreciate that families trees can be complex and we will be sensitive to the the fact that families come in many forms. Please let me know if there is a special issue that needs my consideration for class discussion.
Optional :
•If you have photos of your child at various stages growing up, please send them in labelled. You might also like to send in artefacts like a  toy or blanket from when they were small.
•Artefacts for the class museum. If you have old things at home that would help us learn about the past, please send them into school for our class museum- it may just be tape recorder, record, giant old mobile phone or it could be grandma’s dress. If you have something precious, you could bring it in for show and tell and return it the same day.
•Guest speakers. We would like to know what life was like growing up in different parts of the world. How was school different? Games? Homes? Visuals like pictures or real things will bring this alive. Please email me if you would like to come to be a guest speaker and we will arrange a time.
Thank you so much for your help with this unit! Your support will enrich our learning experience.

Thank you: A huge thank you to our Mystery Reader this week Crystal Chu! The students were truly touched by the inspiring true story you read to them. What a wonderful lesson in both perseverance and being thankful for what we have. Students have already noted this week what they are thankful for–I love it!

Green Week: Screen Shot 2017-04-21 at 8.30.30 AM

Prep Assembly: Prep D looks forward to sharing what they are learning about during our Assembly on May 12th. We are starting to prepare for this assembly and I will let you know of any special needs that arise. Please stay tuned as I will update more on this next week.

Book Donation: Grade 6 students are collecting books on the 9th floor as part of their PYPX action plan, and they would like to ask students to take in second hand picture and chapter books from home that are in good condition, as well as puzzles, games and flashcards. This book drive will last from April 24th to April 28th. All donations will go towards young children and refugees in Hong Kong.

Prep Field Trip: In connection to our current UOI, the students will be going on a field trip to the Museum of History on May 8th. Field Trip permission slips were sent home today in your child’s zipper pouch and we are asking for them to be returned by April 28th. We are looking for 10 parent volunteers for this field trip (we will leave school at 10 am and return by 1:45) so if you would like to volunteer please email me. If we have over 10 volunteers we will put all the names in a hat and pull out 10 names and will contact the parents who are part of that 10.

Prep Sports Day: We will be enjoying our Prep Sports Day on May 17th and will be sending home a form with further information on May 1st. Please look for this information soon, as we will require parent volunteers to help us run our centres.

Good afternoon parents! I can hardly believe Spring Break is upon us! The excitement and anticipation is definitely in the air. We have had a fun-filled week in Prep and are eager to enjoy our vacations. I wish you all fantastic holidays full of family time, rest, and pure enjoyment! I look forward to seeing each smiling face from Prep D after the break.

Unit of Inquiry: We have concluded our unit of How We Express Ourselves this week, where students were able to create a story in a manner of their choosing. I have absolutely loved watching the students express themselves through story telling, reading, arts, and music. What an expressive and creative class we have! You can expect a green folder coming home today with some work from your children throughout the past unit. Your children have also finished an entire writing journal, so please do take the time to read through the journal entires with your young ones. The growth of the students is quite visible as you look through their journals; they are so eager to begin in their new ones!

Reading:  The students are progressing nicely in their reading, growing daily in interest level, as well as fluency and comprehension. Your diligent reading at home with your child, coupled with the reading we do in class is proving very fruitful. I really appreciate your support with our at home reading program. It is a pleasure to watch the children enjoy selecting new books on a daily basis. I encourage you to read whenever you can with your child over spring break.

Math: We have continued working on even and odd numbers, exploring them in small and large groups and working more in our math journals. We have also begun working on some addition word problems, focusing on different strategies to put numbers together. Students are learning to count on, draw pictures, use manipulatives, and add with number lines. How exciting to watch them expand their minds in math!

Thank you: Thank you to Azmar Sukandar for coming in as our Mystery Reader this week! The children enjoyed the variety of books you brought and were as excited as every to hear you read. 🙂 Also a huge thank you to Pam Ku and Karen Chung for organising such a fabulous Easter Egg hunt and class celebration! The children had a blast finding the eggs and enjoyed all the delicious treats. Thank you so much to all the parents who came in to help out during the celebration and who generously donated food and supplies for the party. Your kindness and creativity is very much appreciated!!

Enjoying the the start of our second session of swimming classes!

Good afternoon parents! I hope you are having a fabulous day, despite the dreary weather. We certainly had a jam-packed week of fun and learning in Prep. The excitement and anticipation of Spring Break is palpable in our classroom!

Unit of Inquiry: It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of our Unit of Inquiry of How We Express Ourselves. This week, we continued to investigate how stories are shared and closely examine more components of a story. The students enjoyed noticing a variety of settings in stories and creating their own stories, using different settings and characters. We also discussed the plot of stories and broke down several read alouds into beginning, middle, and end. We expressed ourselves through art in a whole body drawing activity with music (see pictures below), as well as telling stories through symbols with aboriginal art. We look forward to concluding our unit next week with a summative assessment, where students will choose how they would like to share a story.

Portfolios: Thank you for returning your child’s portfolios; we hope you enjoyed viewing your child’s learning journey thus far in Prep. As a gentle reminder, please return portfolios next week before break if you have not yet done so.
Swimming:  We enjoyed a great start to our second session of swimming on Tuesday! The students were so excited to get back in the pool and show how much more confident they were. Unfortunately, we will miss the next few Tuesdays of swimming because of holidays. We look forward to our next swimming session on Tuesday, April 25th.
Items from Home: We have recently had a lot of items brought in from home and consequently, things are going missing. I would ask that all personal items (i.e. toys, Pokemon cards, Pokemon books) stay at home. This definitely helps limit distractions during class time. Thank you for your support with this!
Playground update: I am happy to report that we have implemented a new rotating morning playground schedule, where Prep and Grade 1 have separate play times. The Prep teachers are now able to more frequently monitor behaviours on the playground and this extra space has alleviated a lot of over crowding issues. The students have also been working really hard at making safe playground choices and we are seeing real improvements!
