All About Pitch

by sarahhodgson on April 11, 2013

This week, Reception classes started to think about pitch.

We used a song from the story Noah’s Ark to help us think about the voices of four different animals – mice, monkeys, bears and lions. The students were first encouraged to find their own words to describe the sounds. We then explored the words ‘high’ and ‘low’ when listening to the sounds of the animals.

Pitch is a difficult musical concept to grasp at this age, and students often confuse the words ‘high’ and ‘low’ with ‘loud’ and ‘quiet’. The purpose of introducing this concept during the Reception year is merely to expose the students to the words and their meanings and to give them opportunities to explore their ideas through play. It is not an expectation that students will fully understand the concept of pitch.

Creating A Pattern Dance

by sarahhodgson on March 7, 2013

This week Reception classes continued to work on dance patterns in Performing Arts. Using ideas that came from the students last week, we focused on the following success criteria when trying to create our own dance patterns:

Students worked in groups of three or four to create their own pattern dance from scratch. There were some amazing ideas and very tricky moves! Here is a short video of one of the groups from Reception in action:

What makes a good dance pattern?

by sarahhodgson on February 27, 2013

That is the question that Reception classes have been pondering this week! We have been practicing the dances we have learnt so far – Hand Jive, Chicken Dance, YMCA and Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes. We then tried to answer the focus question before starting to create our own pattern dances.

Introduction to Patterns in Dance

by sarahhodgson on January 16, 2013

This week in performing arts the Reception students started to think about songs that are accompanied by actions. We practiced Incy Wincy Spider, Twinkle Twinkle and Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes. We started to think about how some of the actions make a repeated pattern. We then worked on the Chicken Dance! See videos of each class dancing below:

The students were exposed to a range of percussion instruments and thoroughly enjoyed making music with Steve. There are almost 200 photos here, featuring all eight classes, and also a video below! Enjoy.

Lots of excitement in performing arts today as we used iPads to explore the use of our senses! Winter Concert

by sarahhodgson on November 20, 2012

Christmas is coming! And so is the Winter Concert! Performers are mostly students who take part in music-based ASAs. Please note there will be no CLASS performances at this event. BUT… tickets are available to anyone in the school community who would like to enjoy a little festive music (available soon from the LLAC Box Office – we will let you know when they are ready!). Each performer in the event will receive two tickets to the concert. We will also be holding a holiday reception before the event – so come and enjoy some delicious festive treats in the LLAC Lobby from 2:30pm onwards.

Please note that we will NOT be videoing this performance.
