Two staff at school (can you guess who?) made this video for the end of year Prep assembly last week!
Prep
This week Prep A, B, D and E have been using iPads to create their own music (Prep C and F were busy working on their wonderful Spotlight performances). The students used the Pro Keys app and worked in pairs to compose a piece of music using the ABA structure we have been learning about recently.
The students worked independently and showed fantastic collaboration skills. They composed, improvised, recorded and saved their own music tracks – and all this WITHOUT ADULT HELP!
I have uploaded a track from each pair onto SoundCloud. Please click on the image below to listen to the tracks – please also feel free to click on the ‘like’ button for any of the tracks that you like. I apologize if your student’s work does not appear here – I collected all the tracks I could find from ten different iPads (that were saved with names!) and some students were absent when we completed this task.
A busy week for Prep classes… two Spotlight performances in the Forum this week, showcasing our current unit:
Compositions can be organised using musical structures.
Watch the students sharing their own compositions at the performances…
Prep F Spotlight – Tuesday 21 May 2013
Prep C Spotlight – Thursday 23 May 2013
This week, Prep classes started to think about a new stand alone music unit with the central idea:
Compositions can be organised
using musical structures.
The students first completed a pre-assessment to determine their initial understandings of the words that we will focus on. Some great ideas! We will look back at these charts at the end of the unit to see how their thinking changes.
(Prep A will do this next week – they missed one lesson this week due to the Spring Break).
We then started to think about the way a song is structured. Using the song ‘Penny Lane‘ by The Beatles we started to learn about three different parts of a song - ‘chorus’, ‘verse’ and ‘bridge’.
The students listened very carefully and identified the structure as:
V C V B C V C C
We will continue to explore this unit for the remainder of the school year.
Congratulations to Prep A for a fabulous Spotlight performance today! Students had ben working incredibly hard in rehearsals and they seemed to enjoy the final culmination of their stories unit. many thanks to Ms. Pih, Ms. Aman, Mr. Ko and Mr. Pang for their help and support in putting this show together – we couldn’t have done it without them!
If you missed the performance, don’t worry! You can view it here:

Prep classes are currently working with Mr. Ko. They will have one dance and one performing arts lesson per week during this time. This week was the final session with Mr. Ko – back to two performing arts classes per week with Miss Hodgson as normal next week!
This week Prep classes were continuing to explore fairy tales through drama. We had fun playing with ‘mixed-up’ fairy tales, taking different characters, places and events from the stories we know and mixing them up! Here are some pictures of Prep D in action:
Prep classes are currently working with Mr. Ko again for the next few weeks. They will have one dance and one performing arts lesson per week during this time.

In performing arts this week, students continued to think about the different ways that stories can be shared. We listened to the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and came up with ideas about how the different characters in the story could be represented through sound. Students explored the use of dynamics, tempo, pitch and timbre to create different ‘voices’ for the characters in the story. Here are some ideas that came from the students:
