Scanning notes into Evernote

by saeedrahman on October 30, 2012

The Evernote app interface has undergone significant changes and as such, some of the screenshots and processes you see here are outdated. I am working on revising this shortly

Evernote is all buzz at the moment! It’s a tool which essentially allows you to easily curate digital information (in the form of notes) from the web as well as create your own notes, and keep your note[books] in synch on multiple platforms and devices – Android, iOS, BlackBerry and Palm. Evernote has functionality that allows you to scan documents directly to your Evernote library. Unfortunately sending scanned documents directly from the copiers to your Evernote email address does not work from within school. The copiers have been configured to scan to internal FirstClass email addresses only. This short guide uses a workaround and goes through the process of using the FujiXerox copiers to scan notes directly into an Evernote notebook, as well as at the same time, assign tags to your note. The scanned document is sent to your FirstClass email account, forwarded to Evernote via the FirstClass message rule, and then deleted from FirstClass, so it doesn’t take up precious disk quota within your FirstClass mailbox.

Pre-requisites

  • You must have an Evernote account
  • The notebook you are scanning to must exist within your Evernote library
  • The tags you are applying must exist within your Evernote library
  • You must setup a message rule within FirstClass which will forward any tagged documents to Evernote

Step 1 — Creating a Message Rule in FirstClass

  1. In FirstClass, click on the FirstClass menu and select Preferences
  2. Click on the Messaging tab, and ensure that the Mail Rules sub-tab is selected
  3. Click on the Mailbox Rules button and then New Advanced Rule button
  4. You can find your Evernote email address by clicking on the Current Monthly Usage indicator from within the Evernote application. Ensure that your settings are similar to the screenshot below

Customising Home Page Image

by saeedrahman on October 23, 2012

In this post, I am going to show you how to customize the current image (below) you see on the front page of your blog in 2 easy steps.

Current default front page image

Step 1: Uploading your Image

Media Library Button

Before getting into the nitty-gritty of uploading images, please take a look at my post on image optimization. Your blog contains a repository where you can easily upload and access media. Find the Media button at the left of your Dashboard, which looks like the image below. Click on ‘Add New’ and then ‘Select Files’. A Finder window will appear, locate your image and click on the ‘Select’ button. Once your image has been uploaded, copy the ‘File URL’ and go to the step 2: Changing the Default Image.

Step 2: Changing the Default Image

Thesis Design Options

In this step, we will access the Thesis theme design options and add some HTML code for your image to be displayed. Click on the ‘Thesis Options’ button, and choose ‘Design Options’. Click on the + symbol next to ‘Multimedia Box’ to expand the default settings for the multimedia box. Change the drop down menu from ‘Rotating images’ to ‘Custom code’. In the Custom multimedia box code’ section type in the following, replacing YOUR_LINK with the ‘File URL’ you copied in step 1

<img src=”YOUR_LINK”>

For example: <img src=”http://sites.cdnis.edu.hk/teachers/saeedrahman/files/2010/02/Media-Library.png”>

Visit your blog homepage, and you should now see your own image in the multimedia box at the right hand side.
