On Thursday, we visited the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to learn about the history of money in Hong Kong as well as the design and safety features of notes. Thank you to Vivian who helped us that day.

Some key terms we covered this week include supply, demand, gross profit and net profit.

After looking at the common features of persuasive text, we compiled our ideas and made a list of topics we could argue about. Some of the ideas the children came up with include:

  • Should citizens of Hong Kong be allowed to play Pokemon Go on the streets?
  • Should swimming be offered throughout the year at CDNIS?
  • Should uniform be mandatory at school?

As a class, we completed a modelled writing piece about Pokemon Go. Afterwards, students collaborated with a partner to come up with 3 arguments and supporting detail for why swimming should/shouldn’t be offered throughout the year. Next week, they will begin to work on writing a persuasive piece independently.

This week we focused on another mental math strategy: Doubles. Students played a variety of games to help solidify their understanding.

We also examined different ways to come up with a sum using Hong Kong currency. Firstly, students used manipulatives and mindmaps to assist them with jotting down their thinking and counting out loud. Now, they are working with a partner to document their understanding using StopMotion. Stay tuned!

Sign-up to audition for Student Showcases
Calling all musicians, singers, dancers, gymnasts, actors, poets and more! The Lower School Performing Arts Department is looking for talented Prep-Grade 6 students to perform in the Student Showcases on April 5-7. The showcase provides an opportunity for students to share their amazing talents in front of an audience of their peers. Auditions will be held after school in the Forum on March 1 and 2. If your child is interested, sign them up to audition in the form here.
