Summer Home Learning if you want!!
Mathematics
The kids have many apps on the iPad to play and practice math skills. However, please ensure that they are playing them properly before you use them to practice their math skills. Otherwise, here are some math skills to practice this summer:

  • fractions (when cooking or serving food),
  • time (hour, half hour, quarter to/after)
  • reading word problems
  • skip counting (by 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 9s)
  • Addition and subtraction facts to 20
  • Mathletics: on the children’s iPads they all have the mathletics app. Their login is saved on the iPad and their password is their name.
    Math Facts Practice
•Addition (or subtraction) War: Split the deck of cards into two piles (take out the jacks, queens, kings). Each player flips the card from the top of their pile at the same time. The first one to call out the sum wins! (subtraction is the same)

To also support kids making use of the web for learning, I’ve created a collection of websites gathered via a LiveBinder. The sites are organised by content area and provide engaging, fun activities for a variety of ages and grade levels. Use them and share with your kids in whatever way makes sense given your context. Click on the link to access.  Also as an alternative to TV here’s a collection of  YouTube channel with curated “Summer Learning” videos for kids to watch.

But what matters most?  Summer Reading!

Over one hundred years of research clearly shows that children who do not read plentifully during the summer lose a lot of ground in their reading development.   Also, Raz-Kids is still on line over the summer so please keep up the reading!
