G4 Student Led Learning Review 2014

by marcsteiner on April 8, 2014

For G4:

Discuss with your parents any of the 4 main Central ideas covered so far this year in PE and why they are important (see below).

Take a look at the photos and video that accompany the Central Ideas and discuss the different activities covered.

Answer the questions posed with your parents. You can choose which ones you most want to discuss as you might not have time to go through all of them.

Central Ideas for Physical Education 2013-2014

Team Games

Success in games depends on skills, rules, strategies and sportsmanship.

Discuss or demonstrate some of the strategies you used this year to be more successful in games like basketball, soccer, team-handball, capture the flag … (creating and denying space, using appropriate techniques to be more successful, communicating with teammates…).

Share some rules of games you played and why they are important?

Show your parents some techniques like proper set-shot technique in basketball (one hand does all the work, the other supports…) or how to throw/defend in team handball – be the coach/trainer even though you don’t have a ball.

Discuss how you demonstrated sportsmanship and what it means to you.

Health Related Fitness

Striving for a higher level of fitness is beneficial for a person’s overall health and wellbeing.

Discuss your progress in your fitness appraisals – What actions did you take to improve (Did you do specific training – let’s say sit-ups everyday, running for 15 minutes a day…? Did you join an ECA or Timberwolves team)?

Does being more fit allow you to participate more actively and for longer periods of time in games?

If you can participate more actively for longer periods of time does this help make the game more fun?

Does being more fit make you healthier?

Are you less likely to get injured if you are more fit?

Have you learned new ways to get fit?

Did you enjoy completing the fitness circuit at the beginning of the year?

Would you say you are a better athlete than at the beginning of the year?

Cooperative Games/Action Adventure

Individuals and groups use a variety of strategies and skills to solve problems and accomplish common goals.

What strategies did your team use to have success in Doctor Dodgeball?

Individual Pursuits

There are a number of ways to influence individual performance.

Discuss what you did:

  • In badminton (How to serve a shuttle/birdie – different types of serves and strokes, rules you know…)
  • Swimming? (Type of strokes and techniques used, swim safety, water polo…).
  • You can also discuss how weather might affect performance (and what you can/can’t do about it – think about rain, lightning, hot weather) The amount of water/fluids you drink when competing, sleep and rest you had before a competition and how performance can be affected by whether you are healthy or injured.
  • From last year’s sports day you can talk about the things you can do to help you achieve success in a sport like track and field.

G6′s Mentoring the Pre-Receptions 2014

by marcsteiner on April 3, 2014

It is always great to see the G6′s working with the youngest children of the school.  They get to be leaders and practice their virtues of caring, patience and being good communicators. The pre-reception students also get to practice being risk-takers, work on their listening skills, inquiry skills and develop their self-confidence.

I was very proud of how both age groups worked together.  Below is a short vid clip of the kids in action.
