Gr4 Parent letter 2013

Gr.7/8 digital ambassadors once again helped to live stream the PYP Exhibition globally. They demonstrated great team work and skills being the interviewers, camera operators, and the chat room monitors.  Thanks to Vincent and Charlie who dedicated their time to create a video to showcase the gr. 6 students’ inquiry journey.  The video was shown at the opening ceremony.

With the help of their teachers, Prep students used the iPad app iMotion HD to create fun animations to retell the endings of some classical stories like the Three Little Pig, The Selfish Crocodile, etc… See their creative videos here:

Students in Gr.3 were learning about beliefs and values. They created a storyboard, searched for “free to use” images on Google, and then recorded a script to show their beliefs in iMovie.

Students in Gr.4 were learning about the elements of a commercial and persuasive writing. They then worked collaboratively and used green screen techniques to make a commercial in iMovie.

Gr.1 students were learning about math doubles and using Popplet on the iPads to show their understanding. In groups of two, they worked together to take pictures of their doubles blocks and showed their calculations. Thanks to our Gr.1 friends for sharing their learning!

Another successful 21CLHK conference was held at Renaissance College this past weekend with four fantastic keynote speakers (Dr. Larry Rosen, Ms Nicole Pinkard, Mr. Dan Meyer and Ms Jennifer Lane) and many innovative workshops, forum discussions, presentations, and unconference.

CDNIS iPad Learning Journey 21CLHK

 Vivian and I were excited to present to about 30 participants on “The iPad journey at CDNIS”.  Participants shared actively on the following topics:

• How do you evaluate and choose apps?
• What is your learning intention?
• How do you manage the iPads at your school?
• How have you been using content creation tools in your classrooms?
• What’s your school vision on the future development of these mobile devices?

The following are what I have learned from other keynotes and workshops:

Nicole Pinkard  - Keynote

• What is literate? Read or write traditionally?
• Graphical/Musical/Cinematrical/Interactive
• Learners should be both consumer and contributor of the web
• Create digital artifacts beyond text
• Knowing the basic of editing a video of themselves
• Have students map out tech journey: Home. School. After school. Home. Local communities and global communities.
• Many students have lots of tech experiences but lack of connections!
• Development and how to take advantage of tech? How do we find the connections between the tech they use?
• What is the role of tech on their learning is not just the responsibilities of schools!
• Students in Chicago joining the DYN program have lots more experience than students without joining the program. They have alot  more social community connections, social mentors and audiences
• Academic outcomes…..does it take them away from traditional skills?
• They see improvements on writing skills (e.g. before making a film they need to have to write a script…)

Dr. Jenny Lane – Keynote

• shares the TPACK iPads in schools project
• emphasize on higher order thinking skills
• New technologies = New opportunities = Worth investing time and energy and resources
• Mobile learning = virtual spaces learning in different times and phases
• Traditional libraries have been re-configured into learning hubs to engage learning with mobile device
• Bring the world into your classroom = Take your classroom into the world = Take the teacher home
• Teachers need to be connected professionally
• Teachers need support to teach effectively
• Ways to Collect Evidence (Surveys, analytical tracking use of online resources, video diaries, video of classroom practice, analysis and artichoke, focus groups)

Wendy Gorton  - Google Apps in Education

• Skills on Google apps:
• bit.ly/hkgoogle
• used google form to collect emails and then share a presentation quickly with students
• how to use chat box in a class
• chat with students inside and outside of classrooms
• can control chat on domain level (can’t change the colors)
• Application in classes: somewhere in the workflow, teachers can use a presentation file to let students take a picture of their final product and 1. science experiment or math formula, take a picture then at the end of the class they see everyone’s work and reflection (can do it in doc or presentation)
• Writing partners (two students share a slide and comment on each other’s writing style, give each other two stars and a wish)
• Gr.3 students can write poem on each slide to make a presentation together
• How to Embed a presentation – Publish to the Web then select the size
• Use insert comment – highlight the picture and students can comment on each other’s work (I love how you rotate the picture…)
• Click on Comments – Notifications Settings to help your students decide what to choose.
• Tools – Research (search google or images or scholar…)
• Ask students to write about a topic and use Research to find quote or pictures
• Click on All changes saved in Drive OR File to see the Revision History
• Google document – make use of Table of Contents
• Use of Google doc ideas: keep a running log of all the meetings, science experiment, vocal games, lit circles, collaborative storytelling, unit planning, conferencing with students, newsletters for parents,

• Make sure you use license style work or teacher/student created artwork

• Can publish to school website for students to download and play
• Need an Apple developer account to test on iPad but can use a Chinese pad costing $1000

CDNIS has recently subscribed to the Google Apps services, that means all students and staff in the school can use a variety of Google products under the same domain name – cdnis.edu.hk.  To help staff and students to sign in to use the services, we have made a Google Migration Instructions document.  Please let LTT know if you need any help to sign in to your Google account.

Add a Picasa slide show to a PARTICULAR PAGE OR POST

In Google Picasa

1. In Picasa, open an album with pictures you want to use for the slide show
2. Under Actions > Album properties
3. 
4. In Visibility, choose “Limited, anyone with the link”
5. On the right hand side, click on “Link to this Album”
6. 
7. Click on “Embed Slideshow”
8. 
9. You will see a box “Create a portable slideshow for your website, blog, Myspace, etc.”
10. Choose Select Slide Show Options, choose “Large 400px”
11. Click on the yellow box and highlight the code
12. Copy the embed code (Command C)

In Word Press

1. Login to your website
2. Go to Dashboard
3. Create a new post or page
4. In the post or page content, click on the HTML tab
5. 
6. Paste the embed code into the content box
7. Click back to Visual tab
8. Publish or Update
9. Preview your post or page
