Exploring Power, Prepping to Say Goodbye to the Lower School & Buddies

by Donald MacPherson on May 24, 2013

An unexpected short week with Black Rain on Wednesday. In Canada we’d have snow days, a perfect time to build snow forts or get some hockey going. In any case, I’m sure our Grade 6s enjoyed the unexpected day off to catch their breath as we enter the final stretch of the school year. We’ve been working on our Power Masks (you can see some images below) and continued working on our inquiries into our central idea, “The use of power has consequences that affect relationships and access to opportunities.” In Math we’ve been consolidating our understandings of pattern and function and are beginning to look at algebraic expressions. We’ll continue next week.

On Friday, May 31, Kim Saville from The School of St. Jude in northern Tanzania, will come to the LLAC Theatre to speak with the Grades 5 and 6 students about children’s rights and how poverty can be fought through education. Kim Saville is the director of the school and will share what the school has achieved in its ten years of operation. There will a separate evening presentation on Thursday, May 30 that teachers and parents are welcome to attend. See the following link for details.

A benefit of being an older student in the Lower School is that you get to work with younger Learning Buddies. Our buddies, in Prep, started their own 20% Time, facilitated by our class. The younger students chose what they wanted to do, based on their unit of inquiry, “Where We Are in Place and Time”. You can see below some of the amazing things that happened these past few weeks.
