HTWW: Week 1 Update

by Ann on September 7, 2018

The Bubbles have been very busy inquiring into two different units this week!

As mentioned earlier, we have been working on building a more positive mindset in class. The students are learning that their mindset greatly impacts the process of anything– whether it’s math, writing or even sports. We have been working on being mindful of the words we say to each other, to ourselves and even our quiet thinking.

In Math, we have been working on representing numbers in a variety of ways such as modelling using base ten blocks, place value, breaking down (decomposing), and number bonds. The students have also been learning about rounding numbers, and although can be a confusing concept to learn, they are getting used to the rules: less than 4- round down, more than 4- round up. We have also been using a fantastic website you can access at home called Math Starters. We usually do a quick activity at the beginning or end of a lesson to help activate our mathematical minds or as a quieter activity.

The students have also started inquiring into structures, and this week we looked at several photos of famous ones (ex: Bank of China in HK) as well as the not so obvious types (ex: bridge). They have sorted photos as a prior knowledge activity and next week, we will come up with our class definition. Stay tuned!

The Bubbles are still working on their reading stamina as well as setting norms for reading workshop. This week their stamina increased to 21 minutes! While independent reading is important, to share reading with another (a peer, teacher, parent) makes the experience even more special. This week the students have read with a buddy and are learning ways to talk about a book. In the coming days, the focus will be on non-fiction text and specific strategies.

In writing, we reviewed the writing process and created our essential agreements as a community of writers. They have completed their ‘The Best Part of Me’ piece that they have worked hard on. With a partner, students are learning to edit (capitals, punctuation, spelling) and revise (does this make sense? does it look right? does it sound right?). Our text purpose for the next unit is to inform, which goes perfectly with our reading focus.

We have also had the pleasure of two special G3 teachers visit us this week: Ms. Sandul (art teacher) and Ms. C (Guidance Counselor). Ms. Sandul just couldn’t wait to meet her G3 friends, and wanted to create art with them right away. 3B drew an animal that best represented their traits and wrote a badge explaining why. Ms. C focused on the 3 Rs: Recognise, Report and Refuse as part of our school-wide Anti-Bullying program.
