The students will be swimming and playing games on the beach for the main portion of the day. Please advise your me directly if you have any concerns about your child swimming. Monday Update – May 7th

by alonicahusac on May 7, 2012

Happy Weekend Everyone!

It’s been a very busy time around the 8th floor as we wrap up the Sharing the Planet unit of inquiry. The China Trip was a success and the participants all told fun stories of their adventures when we returned to school of Wednesday. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the 4-day break for Buddha’s Birthday and International Labor Day.

Our next unit of inquiry is under the transdisciplinary theme of Who We Are. This unit will investigate the changes that humans go through over the course of their lives. A lot of information will be shared with you at the start of this unit, considering that some aspects of the unit are sensitive (i.e. puberty) and require your awareness.

Next week is Festival of the Arts all week long at CDNIS. Expect some exciting surprises and fun workshops throughout the week.

Wednesday, May 9th will the DragonFly Camp parent information session at 6:00pm in the school library. In the coming days a lot of information will be shared with you, like the packing list, sleeping arrangements and day groups.

Welcome Back!

by alonicahusac on April 10, 2012

I hope that everyone enjoyed their Spring Break holiday! This morning in the Generator, we started our day with a class community circle where we shared funny/exciting/interesting/weird stories from our holidays. The Dynamos sure did some crazy things on their adventures and some stories made us laugh, while others made us cringe. We heard about misadventures in snorkeling, a massive splinter in a toe, an over-sized guinea pig, egg tossing in a Japanese restaurant, mustache shaving, squat toilets, mini-skirts while hiking, bad bikinis at the water park, and scooters on the super highway. Can you guess whose story is whose?

To read all about these events please visit the Dynamo blogs on the right to see their most recent posts about the stories. Some Dynamos wrote about their own adventures and others wrote about their classmates stories. Check them out. Leave a comment! :)

Friday Update – March 16th

by alonicahusac on March 16, 2012

We began a very exciting new unit of inquiry this week, Sharing The Planet, which focuses on the actions people can take to affect the rights of children around the world. The link above will take you to the page where you can view the unit overview. Please ask your child about their initial impressions of this unit. As the issues we will delicately explore are sensitive ones, it is important to have open communication at all times between parents – teachers – students. I have also sent a special parent email regarding more specific details about the nature of this unit. Please contact me if you did not receive this email.

Reminders for next week:

Monday, March 19th – Early Dismissal 11am
Tuesday, March 20th – Alan Dick Memorial Walk

Have a great weekend everyone! Thank goodness that the sun has returned :)

Fractions Tutorials for Grade 3

by alonicahusac on March 15, 2012

Today we worked in groups of four (two grade 3 students and two grade 5 students) to collaboratively reinforce our understanding of Fractions. The Dynamos, who are finishing their unit on Fractions right now, helped the Grade 3 students, who are beginning their Fractions unit right now. We started by finding out what they already know, discussing the concepts in more depth and then challenging them with some more difficult problems for practice. The Dynamos also used their computers and their individual projects to illustrate and explain new ideas. Here are some photos of the groups!

Getting to Know Bill Helin

by alonicahusac on March 12, 2012

We spent the afternoon with Bill Helin, our CDNIS artist in residence. Bill told us about what inspires his artwork as well as his own personal background. The entire totem pole carving project is quite fascinating, indeed. Today we learned about all the animals that make up the 2 totems being carved for our school.

Totem 1: Water Dragon, Orca Whale, Mountain Lion
Totem 2: Yin & Yang, Raven, Wolf, Bear

Each animal has a lot of symbolism and a specific story about why it was chosen. Ask your child what each animal represents about CDNIS and its connection to Bill and Canada.

Please see click here to read more about this project. Also, we checked in on Bill as he was doing his carving via a webcam that shows you the 3rd floor longhouse at all hours of the day!

Sunday Update – March 11th

by alonicahusac on March 11, 2012

I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing 3-day weekend :)

Last week was a very serious one, where we wrapped up our last unit of inquiry about waste management and how we organize ourselves. The Dynamos were dynamite as they presented their summative speeches – 2-minutes in the spotlight. I was very proud of all the efforts and risk taking that was involved as students took center stage. Recordings of the student speeches will soon be available on the student blogs.

Swimming Reminder! Since the Dynamos did not have their regular swimming class on Friday, Mr. Steiner has arranged a special swimming class on Monday, March 12th. Students will also swim this Friday, March 16th. Please remember to pack your child’s swim kit on both Monday and Friday.

This Tuesday, March 13th we are excited to attend a special presentation with John Wood, founder of Room to Read. Find out more about this on the CISPA website.

The Best Way to Learn About Speeches?

by alonicahusac on March 3, 2012

In 5D we don’t always do things the conventional way, if you know what I mean. This week we decided that a great way to learn about giving quality speeches was to think of all the things you SHOULDN’T do! And a fun way to demonstrate those things is to act them out. And an even better way to show our understanding and help others is to share what we think. So here’s our latest class video project titled, “15 Things Not To Do When Giving A Speech!

We hope you enjoy!

What is Your Trash Attitude?

by alonicahusac on February 20, 2012

We’ve been really getting into our new Unit of Inquiry about Waste Management. As with most inquires we do, we’re following an inquiry cycle like the one described below.

For “Tuning In” we’ve been watching a show called Wa$ted, the Pearl Report on Hong Kong’s trash, mini-clips from YouTube. We’ve also been reading loads of articles that we’ve found in the newspapers and magazines. For “Finding Out” we’ve been investigating and recording data about the specific advantages and disadvantages of recycling, dumping, hazardous waste treatments, landfills, incinerators, reusing, sewage treatment, and more! As we’ve moved into “Sorting Out” the Dynamos are also writing a practice persuasive speech about an argument related to waste management. The summative task of this unit, which we’ve been working on since the beginning of the unit, will encompass “Going Further” and “Making Conclusions“.

So far, we’re just developing an understanding of all the intricacies (specific and connected parts) of waste production & waste management. Your homework task today is to leave a comment about your own “Trash Attitude” Ask your parents, talk to your friends and consider the following questions before you write your response:

1. What do you think about trash in general (i.e. all the waste that humans create)?
2. What do you think about waste management in Hong Kong?
3. What is the biggest problem with waste management in the world?
4. How would you describe your own attitude towards waste management?
5. Is there anything that you’d like to do (take action!) to address this problem?

Your response should be well thought out and planned ahead of time. When you are ready, and sure that you have addressed all the questions above, please write your response as a comment to this post. You MUST include your Dynamo # so that I know who has submitted a comment. If you’d like to make a change or edit something after you have posted, then please come and see me and we can make any necessary changes.

Friday Update – Feb. 10th

by alonicahusac on February 10, 2012

Happy Weekend everyone! Today was a very special day of sharing in Gr. 5. We spend some time with a Grade 6 class and then some more time with a Grade 4 class, sharing our portfolios. This was excellent practice for what you will be a part of over the next week in your own household. Please take special time and consideration while looking through the portfolio. It will provide you with the evidence and examples of what you see explained in the progress report.

It was a loooong week in Grade 5. The first full week that we’ve had in quite a while ;) We really jumped into our new unit of inquiry, though beginning to plan out some fun activities that will happen over the next few weeks. Garbage sculptures, persuasive speeches, research and investigations into how people manage their trash. Please have some trash talk at home to share your perspectives. Also try and identify your trash attitude.

Next week kicks off the Spring into Reading with a full calendar of activities. Please have a look at the schedule below.Monday, Feb. 13th is an early dismissal day. Students will be dismissed at 11am.

Friday Update – Feb. 3rd

by alonicahusac on February 3, 2012

Welcome back to school! It was a fun, but short, week in the Generator. A highlight was our very informative trip to the Hong Kong’s EcoPark. Please see the photos from the trip in our albums on the right side bar –> This was part of our tuning into our new Unit of Inquiry. Check out the Unit Overview, which is also available on the Units of Inquiry pages in the tabs above. Your child should be able to tell you a lot about the first few days of this exciting unit.

We’re also digging deeper into the concept related to fractions, decimals and percents. Your child will be tracking his/her own work and progress as they inquire into this stand alone math unit. Go to the homework tab, under math, to see how they track their daily work and understanding.

Reminders for next week

Friday, Feb. 10th – Portfolios go home. Progress Reports will be available online.

General School Reminders

- After School Activities (ASAs) start from Saturday 4 February
- Lunch time Extra Curricular Activities (ECAs) start on Tuesday 14 February

Friday Update – Jan. 13th

by alonicahusac on January 13, 2012

What a busy time of year! Coming straight from Winter Break and with Chinese New Year just around the corner!

For Grade 5 it is also a transition time. We are wrapping up our unit, Where We Are In Place & Time and about to begin the new unit, How We Organize Ourselves. The students in 5D spent most of this past week completing their summative tasks and reflections about the unit. You will have a chance to see all their amazing work when the portfolios and reports go home in February. Throughout this unit there was a lot of hard work and time management skills were really put to the ultimate test! There have been some huge accomplishments in this unit. I notice the maturity and the independence of the students developing on a daily basis. Specifically, Let’s Make It Happen was a big highlight for students, teachers and parents.

You may also have noticed that we have begun a math unit focused on Fractions. Ask you child how they are feeling about Fractions and you might be surprised by the poetic answers your receive. This should be an interesting unit for students to challenge themselves, face their fears and break some barriers with their perceptions of mathematics and their own abilities.

Some reminders for next week:

Monday, Jan. 16th – Early Dismissal @ 11:00am
Tuesday, Jan. 17th – CISPA Chinese New Year Flower Fair
Thursday, Jan. 19th – Chinese New Year Concert
Friday, Jan. 20th – Early Dismissal @ 11:00am – macbooks go home!

Have a great weekend and stay dry! :)

Annual Grade 5 Trip to Guizhou Province, April 27th – May 1st 2012

Each year, in association with the Zigen Fund of Hong Kong, a group of teachers, parents and Grade 5 students from CDNIS embark on a 5-day trip to rural China. We travel to remote communities of Guizhou province to meet and visit with school aged children of local minority groups. Participants are exposed to a drastically different way of life, a role of community service and become part of a highly engaging cultural exchange experience.

Student information session – Friday, Jan. 5th @ 12:00-1:00pm LLAC Theater
Ms. Cahusac & Mr. MacPherson will be hosting a presentation for all Grade 5 students where we will watch the movie, Sparrow Village, by Christine Choy filmed in one of the villages visited on the trip. The movie explores what it is like to be a female student in this region. We will also look at some of Ms. Cahusac’s photographs and a video created after the 2009 trip. Some students who attended the trip in the past will also be available to share their perspectives and answer student questions. At the end of this presentation, applications and information packages regarding the trip will be sent home.

Parent information session – Thursday, Jan. 12th @ 5:30-6:30 CDNIS Library
Marcy Trent-Long, lead organizer and member of the HK Zigen Fund, will provide a detailed look into the specifics of the trip. Having worked closely on this trip with CDNIS for the past 4 consecutive years, Marcy Trent-Long has a wealth of information and can answer all your questions. Students are also welcome to attend. No transportation is provided.

Special Homework

by alonicahusac on December 12, 2011

Thy Dynamos have been given a special task for homework this week. Since we’ve been investigating perspective and interpretation by learning about different events in history, I’ve challenged the students to learn a little bit about an event in the past that they believe no one in our class knows about. They have until 2 nights to find out some factual information about a specific event and then on Wednesday they will teach the class what they’ve learned. They may be asking you for help with ideas!

As always, it is optional for your child to bring their computer home so if you’d prefer to leave it in the safety of the school’s macbook cabinets, you are more than welcome to request that. Please email me if this is the case.

Coming up over the next 2 weeks…

Tuesday, Dec. 6: Lower School Winter Concert 3pm in the LLAC
Monday, Dec. 12: Dig Day at South Bay Beach – leaving school at 9.35 and returning at 1.00
Tuesday, Dec 13: Christmas Skating Party at Elements – leaving at 8.20 and returning at 1.00 (all parents are welcome to meet us at Elements at 9am)
Friday, Dec. 16: Grade 5 Christmas Party (periods 3&4) please send snacks or drinks for sharing

Our thoughts on SPLAT!

by alonicahusac on November 29, 2011

The Grade 5s saw an amazing performance poetry piece this afternoon, created and performed by a FAUST touring group. It was a collection of 26 poems acted out in sequence with props, music and special effects. We loved it! The performers gave us a flyer after the show with 5 possible follow-up activities. The students in 5D have been assigned a homework task today, which is to complete one of the 4 possible choices and post their finished product to their student blogs. Check them out over there –>

Weekend Update – Nov. 27th

by alonicahusac on November 27, 2011

Lately Mondays have been great! We started off this past week with another fun-filled field trip to the Coastal Defense Museum. It was my first time there and what an excellent opportunity it became for students to see how historical artifacts are used in museums to present information. Interpretive skills were put to the test as students were challenged to discuss and share particular perspectives of Hong Kong history. It was also a great time for class community building and bonding. It’s really nice when we make time to share new experiences and enjoy trying new things, exploring new places and learning together.

Students have been working in their specific research groups all week to investigate into their topic of choice. In 5D the topics range from the London Blackout,  the colonization of South Africa, the sinking of the Titanic, Spartacus the Roman gladiator, John Dillinger during the Great Depression and United Airlines 93 which was a plane involved in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. You can really assist your child by discussing their research at home and perhaps you can share your own ideas about these events. Throughout this unit, we are also encouraging each other to think deeply, away from just the “good vs. bad” way of looking at history, but instead at unique stories that can be told.

The showing of Nicky’s Family in the LLAC last Tuesday could not have been more timely in this regard; the documentary was a collection of stories that really allowed the students to see how an event can be told through different people’s perspectives.

The Dynamos have recently created blog posts about the Artifact Game. Check out their blogs on  the right to see what artifact they have chosen and maybe even make your own interpretations of what these interesting things could possibly be.
