Dear Parents,

This past week, we began our new UOI by discussing the various reasons people relocate and how their life changes as a result of the move.  We analyzed the central idea to get a better grasp of what we will be learning and began reading stories related to the topic of relocation.  Please encourage your child to read newspaper and/or Internet articles regarding people relocating and share their findings with the class.  Please review our UOI information here to help guide your child through this.

This week

We will continue reading stories, watching videos, and having discussion about relocation.  We will also review jot note taking and how to conduct a proper interview.  Students will be asked to interview someone about a relocation they have made.

Please review these interview skills at home.

Maths

We will carry on learning strategies for addition and subtraction and begin to look at data collection and graphing of data, which will continue over the next few weeks.  Some topics we will cover include

  • Venn Diagrams
  • creating a question for a survey and collect and organize data
  • interpreting and creating pictographs
  • using a variety of graphs
  • interpreting displays of data and discuss them using math language

We will have an assessment on how to read an analogue clock and problems that involve elapsed time.  Please help your child by encouraging him/her to use an analogue watch to give you the time.

Here’s a helpful site for analogue time.

Literacy

We will further our exploration of Narrative texts (setting/orientation, problem/resolution, main events, and descriptive language) through reading and writing,  and focus on enriching their writing with adjectives, adverbs and adverbial phrases.

LTT

We will continue learning how to use SketchUp by completing seven challenges assigned which encourages the children to use the various features of the program.  After they have completed the challenges, they will have an opportunity to design their own 3D structure.
