Our goal is to make a good video, pictures of hong kong, voiceover some bits of the poem and add music.

Hows does this project connect to your English Poem of choice?
Laeticia: It is all about Hong Kong and how it looks one of our poems is about the competition that happens in hong kong we are going to show that by doing time lapses so it kind of looks like people are racing.
Vivian: My poem is about Hong Kong’s tourism,  and how people are disrespecting it and also Hong Kong’s view.
Dia: My poem is about how the pollution in Hong Kong is stripping away its beauty. I make Hong Kong into a person and explain how the pollution is killing it.

How science can cause and solve environmental problems.

 

  1. Give a brief description of an oil spill and how it can be cleaned up using science. It can be cleaned up by a skimmer, boomer and more. It works because oil has less density than the water so it will float on the top, so the skimmer can be able to skim the oil away.
  2. Is science good for humanity? Do the benefits of scientific discovery outweigh the problems it causes? science is good for humanity because it helps with a lot of things and solves lots of problems. And some medicine is made because of science. Also, for example, the oil cleanup, they would be able to clean up the oil if there is no science.

Project Genisus

Explain the step by step process of this assignment… *
During this Project Genesis, I first wrote a proposal of what I’m going to do and what’s my goal and why. Then I started my research on how to do a mashup and basic skills of mashing up things. After I finished the research I went online and found songs and downloaded it into mp3. After that, I placed the songs into the GarageBand and renamed it so it would be easier to find. Then I tried putting different things together and see which one sounds better together. After I finished the first few songs I downloaded it and I added some loops. Later I downloaded more songs. Some I added more loops to it and some I added plug-ins. Later when I finished that part I listened to the mashup a few time and see what can fix and when I’m finished I saved it as mp3 and submitted it onto the blog. So overall in my mashup, there are about 10 songs and 5 loops, 2 to 4 plugins, a drum track, and 2 different digital instruments.

 

Assess your success against your must-haves and desirable qualities from your proposal… *
In my proposal, I wrote my goal, which is “mashup four different songs and create a remix/ mashup and it will probably be 3 or 4 minutes. I will add different things in it, maybe turn the music into electronic music a bit, add loops, effect and different instruments to it. ” I achieved my goals because I used at least 4 different songs, it’s between 3 and 4 minutes. Also, it sounds like some electronic songs and at last, I added different loops, a drum track, piano, harp, and effects. I also succeed at another goal about what I wish to learn, I wrote “I hope to learn how to mashup four songs because I never mashed up songs before, also I want to learn not only how to mashup songs, it’s how to mashup sounds together so it will sound good together. I’m also hoping to learn how to more about beats, using GarageBand, software instruments, loops and etc.” I achieved some of the goals by watching some youtube that talked about it and the rest I learned it by doing it and practicing it on Garageband. Also I had all my must-haves, my must have is “More than 10 different loops, Every song have the same beat, Have 4 songs or more, A Drum track, 2 or 3 digital instruments, Different Plug-ins, Kind of sound like an EDM” and in my mashup it has all 8 of those elements.

 

Evaluate your learning and new skills acquired. *
I learned many new skills in this project, this is new to me because this is the first time I used GarageBand to create a mashup with different songs with many other features. I learned how to mash songs up properly, how to download the mp3 and put it into GarageBand, how to overlap two similar songs so it makes it more interesting but in the same time good, how to add digital instruments with the songs and not making it sound bad, and many other things. I think this project is very nice and fun because it taught me a lot of things about mashups and listening to few of my favourite songs . If I had to teach the class how to do this assignment, I would teach them the way I learned it. For example, I will tell them to research about mashups and see if they can learn it by kind of self teaching. Then teach them how to do mashups if they still don’t know, how to add instruments, how to add songs, how to add a drum track, how to add loops and effects and many other simple things. I will also teach them how to add the songs and how to make two songs sound good together, you can do that by maybe add plug-ins such as delay, and maybe distortion, you could also add loops. GarageBand is important because you can edit the sounds to make it sound fancier and more interesting. So, in conclusion, I learned many new skills in this project and this project really helped me understand how people make mashups more.

 

What challenges did you face and overcome. *
I faced several challenges in this assignment, for example, the songs don’t sound good together. The digital instrument doesn’t work well with the songs or it doesn’t have a beat or a flow. The harp kind of sound weird with the Lucid dream part (song). But the most challenging challenge is how to end it because just before I was about to end this sound I used All the stars from black panther (song) and it has a rap part in it and it just doesn’t sound like it is ending so I need to find a way to make it sound like it’s ending soon. But at last, I overcome these challenges. I overcome the challenge of the songs doesn’t sound good together by changing the song to another song, use a different part of that song, and add plugins. I also overcome the challenge of the digital instrument doesn’t work well with the songs or it doesn’t have a beat or a flow by first adding the notes then go edit it a bit from the bottom part that you can edit. I overcame the harp by changing an octave. Lastly, I overcome how to end it because just before I was about to end this sound I used All the stars from black panther(song) and it has a rap part in it and it just doesn’t sound like it is ending so I need to find a way to make it sound like it’s ending soon, I found a song called break up with your boyfriend i’m bored by Arianna Grande and in the middle there is a part that connects to the previous part a bit and sounds like it’s ending. So that’s how I overcome the challenges.

Project Genesis

Proposal:

  • What is the goal for your assignment? *
My goal for this project is to mashup four different songs and create a remix/ mashup and it will probably be 3 or 4 minutes. I will add different things in it, maybe turn the music into electronic music a bit, add loops, effect and different instruments to it. For the effects, I will use plug-ins because it will make the sound sounds better and different. So in my final product, I want the songs to sound good and smooth together. Also, the other goal I have is to learn more things and make sure I can finish before the deadline so I will have time to fix things if I need to.
  • Outline/Process (Steps) to Achieve Goal. *
First I’m going to go online and find 4 songs that have the same beat and sounds good together. Then I’m going to download the 4 different songs into mp3. Once I download it into mp3s, I will have 4 songs that are approximately 3 to 4 minutes. When I’m done with that part, I will open Garageband and put all the 4 songs together and make sure they are on beats. I will listen to it several times to see how could I do to make it sound better, and I will cut and edit the sound until it sounds like a song and sounds smooth. After the sound sounds good I need to make sure that the mashup has some EDM and doesn’t really sound like the original song. I will also add some loops, instruments, and plugins to fix that. When I’m on that part I’m just almost done, I just need to listen to it a few times and see if it make sense and sound good, if it does then I’m done.
  • Why this project? *
This project because it will let me learn more about GarageBand and creating music. It will also let me learn more interesting things about music mashups, cause I never did anything like this before. Also, this project because I like music and EDMs so choose to mash things up and add effects.
  • What do you hope to learn? *
Throughout this project, I hope to learn how to mashup four songs because I never mashed up songs before, also I want to learn not only how to mashup songs, it’s how to mashup sounds together so it will sound good together. I’m also hoping to learn how to more about beats, using GarageBand, software instruments, loops and etc. In order to learn these things, I will have to watch videos about it, play around with GarageBand and see, and you could also ask around and ask your friends if you need help.

  • What are the desirable qualities you hope to add in for your assignment? *
I hope and want to have the same beat and when I combine the 4 different songs together it can not sound weird. Also, I want to add different loops to make the mashup interesting and not sound like the original sound. I also hope that there will be a drum track that fits the mashup or else it will sound really weird. I also want the mashup to have a EDM  vibe so I need to figure out how to do that.

Sounds of CDNIS

Reflection:
  • Describe the process of this assignment.
In this assignment, I recorded the sounds first, there are 4 different sounds. Water tap running sound, computer typing sound and etc. I also recorded a teacher’s voice, the voice is Mr.E saying, ” Hello students, welcome to science.” Once I finished collecting the sounds I dropped them into GarageBand. In GarageBand, you can edit it any way you want and you could also add things to it. I used the plug-ins and that changed the sound a lot. Some I distorted them and some I added effects on them, for example, the delay effect. Once I added the plug-in s, I choose 2 instruments and 1 drum track. The instruments are Piano and Harp. They kind of sound similar but harp is more like mysterious, old and the sound isn’t the bright but piano’s sound is bright and that makes a contrast. When I finished adding the instruments I added some loops and made it more interesting and not boring. Once I’m done with the loops I listened to it a few times to see if I need to change anything and if I do I changed some places and then I’m finished.

 

  • Discuss your CDNIS sounds and how useful they were for your end product.
My CDNIS sounds are useful because, in the end product, there are many sounds such as instruments, loops, CDNIS sounds, etc. The instrument is like the accompaniment, the loops are the melody and it always changes, and the instrument has beats. But the CDNIS sound has many different effects. Two of my CDNIS sounds is the computer typing sound and the other one is throwing away the trash on the computer and these two are like the accompaniment. I distorted the trash throwing sound so it sounds more like a beat-ish sound, but for the typing sound, I didn’t really distort it, so it’s like it’s original sound. Also, the Teacher’s voice in the CDNIS sound is a big part of my end product so it means that it is very useful. I used to delay and echo to make the voice sound kind of like an alien and made it into a more electronic sound so that it doesn’t sound boring. Lastly, there’s a water tap running sound and I kind of edited a bit and it sounds like the beat. So overall the CDNIS sounds are pretty useful for my end product.

 

  • Evaluate your learning and new skills acquired.
This is new to me because this is the first time I used GarageBand to create something like this with different plug-ins and different instruments. I learned how to distort sounds properly, how to overlap sounds so it makes it more interesting, how to add instruments other than the piano, and many other things. I think this project is very nice because it taught me a lot of things about GarageBand. If I had to teach the class how to do this assignment, I would teach them the way I learned it. For example, I will teach them how to use the plug-ins, how to add instruments, how to add a drum track, how to add loops and many others. I will also teach them how to add keys to the instrument sound. So I press command K to let the keyboard come out and you can add different sounds to the soundtrack. GarageBand is important because you can edit the sounds to make it sound fancier and more interesting. So, in conclusion, I learned many new skills in this project and this project really helped me understand GarageBand more.

 

  • What challenges did you face and overcome?
I faced several challenges in this assignment, for example, the voice of the teacher is too plain. The music doesn’t really have a beat or a flow. The harp kind of sound weird. But the most challenging challenge is how to end this sound interestingly because my audio has a very strong beat at the finishing part and when I tried to end it I just don’t know how to end it, because it won’t sound like an ending. But at last, I overcome these challenges. I overcome the challenge of not really having a beat or a flow by changing the drum tracks to see which one fits in with the sound the best. I also overcome the challenge of having extremely plane speaking audio by using effects on it such as delay and echo so it gives the audio a texture. Lastly, I overcome not having a good ending, because I decided that I’ll end my ending with loops cause in loops there are different sounds and there are varieties of choices. The loops I added it has a really strong beat and it makes the ending lively, exciting but at the same time, the audience will be able to tell that it’s ending. So that’s how I overcome the challenges.
