Your iFolio is a school provided web space that you will use throughout your time at CDNIS. You will use your iFolio to define your learning goals, show your learning journey, reflect on your learning and how you have developed your Approaches to Learning skills, share your best work and celebrate your achievements.

Your iFolio, in time will provide a better picture of who you are as a learner and as an individual. You are therefore highly encouraged to personalize your iFolio. You can start off by selecting one of the 60+ themes available.

Before you start using your new iFolio, follow the steps below to change the ‘Home’ link within your navigation menu to point to your site:

1. Go to your Dashboard menu options (link will open in a new tab)

2. Expand the ‘Home’ menu item by clicking on the downward facing arrow

3. Append the URL to read http://sites.cdnis.edu.hk/students/your_student_number, where your student number is in the form of six digits e.g. 012345 (you can find your student number on your library card)

Grade 10 Service as Action

G10 Service as Action- Reflection

1. How did you become more aware of your own strengths and areas for growth?

Throughout Grade 10, I have taken several roles to serve the school and the large community. By taking the role as a poster designer in my 2018 CAS trip, I was able to become more aware of my skills in art and design, as well as my creativity. I am also an active member of the Interact Club which organize weekly English tutoring sessions with a band 3 local primary school. From teaching children English, I am aware that my strengths are communication skills and patience. As I was communicating with the children, I am able to actively engage the students in conversations and help them with English. On the other hand, my area for growth would be humor. As children have a short attention span, as a tutor or mentor, being humorous would definitely catch the children’s attention more, this could be also seen during my voluntary service in local NGO’s Kids4Kids Buddy Reading Programme.
2. How did you undertake challenges that developed new skills?

My personal project, creating a children’s book to raise children’s awareness and help children in regulating emotions, was also part of my service as action. In the process, I would have written and illustrated the book which was a huge challenge as I have never written a book with young children as my readers, nor illustrated using digital software. I have developed creative writing skills as well as digital drawing skills. Also, I would have to contact multiple NGOs in order to send them book copies to reach a wider range of audience and donate all the proceeds to the charitable organizations. This allows me to develop interpersonal and management skills. The English reading and tutoring session also enables me to develop skills in organizing activity and games and the ability to think from the children’s point of view.
3. How did you discuss, evaluate and plan student-initiated activities?

As a member of the school’s interact club, I consistently work with other club members and executives in initiating activities, planning and creating lesson plans for the English tutoring sessions and meeting the service as action goal. Before each tutoring session, I will meet with other club members to discuss on the lesson plan, and what topics to focus on during the tutoring sessions. As for my personal project, from the creation of the book to contact local children’s NGO, all the tasks and goals are initiated by myself.
4. How did you persevere in action?

I have been participating in interact club’s English tutoring session and Kids4Kids buddy reading programme for two consecutive years. I am also passionate to teach children and hope to facilitate them regarding their academics or mental wellness. This passion helped me persevere in all kinds of services related to children.
5. How did you work collaboratively with others?

For the English tutorial sessions and the reading programme, we would have to work as a team to teach the children. We have to collaborate on the lesson plans, organizing games, and the teaching part. And for the creation of my children’s book, I have to contact the printing companies and work collaboratively with them when it comes to discussing the logistics and the editorial work for my book.
6. How did you develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism, and intercultural understanding?

Both education and mental health awareness is a global issue. Despite not being able to serve overseas, I am able to collaborate with international school students from different parts of the world and achieving the Service ad Action goals together. I am able to learn about their perspective and their way of teaching through planning the tutoring sessions. Through research for my children’s book, I have also read sources from different countries and understand the issue of mental health from multiple lenses which helped develop my intercultural understanding.
7. How did you consider the ethical implications of your actions?

Through my book, young children would be able to acknowledge the importance of mental wellness and learn about the skills to cope with anxieties, which helps them learn more about their emotional development. However, some people or maybe parents may think that anxieties would be too much for young children to understand. Also, I understand that a book would not make much of a difference in raising mental health awareness in the community. On the other hand, despite being able to teach children English through books, I am aware that they do not always have the opportunity to participate in these events.
