Lantern design – Portfolio Vlog Post

What are some cultural considerations people make when designing products?

When designing products, we think about designs that might be offensive to people in the culture and try not to make it. We also investigate what are some lucky signs or symbols in this culture and try to include them in our design. Furthermore, we would think about what an object represents and should we use it in the design. For example, in my design, I used the sign of a butterfly and it meant happiness and beauty in the Chinese culture, but it might have other meanings in other cultures.

How does the design of a product communicate traditions and values?

The design of a product communicates traditions and values by using designs that have a special meaning. They can also represent what a person wishes or their values and it can be affected by the symbols, fonts, text, etc. These different aspects of a design will communicate what a person looks up to since they are the ones that want to use these designs.

Are handmade products an effective way of minimizing environmental impact? Why or why not?

In my opinion, handmade products is an effective way of minimizing environmental impact. I think that because we spend less money on buying materials. Instead, we put together green materials that might be recycled before. These materials are much better than products you bought because these materials save resources from the environment. It has less impact because it doesn’t use up a lot of things in the environment. In conclusion, making your products is much more better than buying products.

Innovation Week – Mindset from The Dream Team

In this week, we worked on our prototypes for innovation week. The whole point of innovation week is to come up a product to solve a local or global problem. For our group, we have me, Bailey, and Emma on our team. We decided to solve the problem of controlling and tracking mental health issues to prevent suicide for youths around the world. So we come up with the idea of creating this bracelet and connecting the bracelet to a app we made to collect data. The bracelet comes with two button, one represents if you press it down, it will track how much time you spend on an emotion. For example, if you’re feeling sad, you can press the button and it will collect the data and send it to the app. For the second button, it’s for contacting your parents, friends, and counsellor in case some emergency comes up such as panic attacks or suddenly in uncontrollable situations. For the app, it has five screens and one is for emotion tracker, one is to connect with qualified therapists in Hong Kong, one is for heart rate check, one is for advices for keeping calm in emergency situations, and the final one is for saving contacts. We also named our product Mindset.

Here’s picture of the bracelet which is 3D printed:

We also made multiple advertisements for our product such as:

We also made graphs for business plans and financial marketing plans:

On the last Friday, we presented our product to different people such as classmates, friends, and parents.

On the celebration, our group got the award of Best Explained groups and we are proud of what we did all this week.

Making my Clock – Design

For the third term of design, I made a laser wood clock for my brand. The clock included a quote and some simple shapes. The quote is “Stars don’t shine without darkness” and the shapes are basically stars. I think it would be a good idea to have this quote on the wall to be an encouragement or motivation for me. The stars represent parts of the quote. I have some problems with the color codes during my making of the clock. But luckily my friend helped me with colors so my clock can be able to be printed. Before my clock was printed, the teacher told me my stroke around the clock is too high and somethings unexpected popped up on my illustrator page. To fix that, I made a copy of my original document and adjusted the stroke to 0.1 pt. After that, my clock was successfully printed. During this process, I learned a lot of new functions in Illustrator. I learned about color codes, how to stroke and fill, and so on. At the end, I’m proud that my clock is printed and everything is happening as I expected.

What I’ve learned about laser cutting design

During the third project for design, we are going to make a clock using a laser cutter. Before making the clock, we did a mini project on a laser cutter. we are assigned to make a key fob on Illustrator and printing it out with a laser cutter. This is my original design:

But unfortunately, my design isn’t able to be printed out because I use blue as a fill and the printer can’t recognise the color so it’s not available for printing, so next time I hope I can use the right color for my designs.

Coding Project

We worked on the Coding Project for design class. Because I’m using a loaner from the school, I am unable to work on the actual coding part for the project. Before the coding step of the project, we are assessed on Criteria B “Developing Ideas”, which is the mockup plan for the actual coding. We first decided which topic are we doing. I decided I’m doing an app about the benefits of listening to music. Then, I designed a rough draft using A4 paper. There is a limitation that we can only have four screens (including one with links to other screens), so I decicded to have one screen talking about the topic, one screen with a fun quiz, and one screen with links and videos. Here’s the photo of the rough draft:

After finishing the rough draft, I started drawing my ideas into a formal plan on a piece of paper with four screens. In this plan, you must include the designs or size of the labels or buttons, you need to write the code for the quiz screen, etc. When you finished the plan, you need to make sure if a person that has absolutely no idea how to code can understand what you need to do. Here’s a photo of my first formal plan:

After giving the first formal plan to the teacher, we found the these good things about the plan:

  • Homepage has color and buttons
  • Code structure awesome

Also, we found some problems:

  • Lack of image on the homepage
  • Can’t tell what topic I’m doing
  • Link Content (what does it tell?)
  • Have object names for links
  • Home button boring
  • Don’t know question

After receiving these feedback, I made some changes to the plan, which has automatically changed to my second formal plan:

MYP Design Crit D – Improving my Ifolio

My Ifolio had been a useful place for summarising what I had learned through my MYP journey. In my Ifolio, there are strengths and weaknesses in it.

Here are the strengths:

  1. All posts in my iFolio is categorized with the subjects that matches my post
  2. All my posts have featured images
  3. The welcome post to my Ifolio is a sticky post which is the first post you see when you come to my blog

Here are the weaknesses:

  1. Sometimes the text will be hard to see according to the font
  2. Don’t have a bar for subjects according to the category

Here’s how I can improve it:

For the font, I should change to a legible font for every post I do so the post I make will be easily read. On the other hand, if there’s a title or subtitle in the passage, I should make the title big enough so people can recognize the topic of my post.

For the subjects, I should customize the subject bar so everything is very organized and a teacher or parent visit my blog, they can easily know what I have been working in school for every subject.

Design Crit. C & D Post

The strength of my blog:

  1. All posts in my iFolio is categorized with the subjects that matches my post
  2. All my posts have featured images
  3. The welcome post to my Ifolio is a sticky post which is the first post you see when you come to my blog

The Weaknesses of my blog:

  1. Sometimes the text will be hard to see according to the font
  2. Don’t have a bar for subjects according to the category

My Plan of Action

For the font, I should change to a legible font for every post I do so the post I make will be easily read. On the other hand, if there’s a title or subtitle in the passage, I should make the title big enough so people can recognize the topic of my post.

Designing Apps!

In design class, we’ve been working on a app that combines all the things we’ve learned for our first three apps.

Before doing it on the computer, we made a plan by drawing and steps on a sheet. Here’s the photo plan:

Here’s a photo of the layout:

Here’s a photo of the code:

Here’s a photo of the app:

I think overall this app worked really well because it is quite easy if you know all the steps for the fist three apps.

Designing Apps

For the past design classes, we have been making apps and coding on Xcode. We already made three apps and two of my apps actually worked although there are some issues when I started coding. Here are screenshots of my most successful app, which is the second one:

What this app does is it will calculate your age in 2050. Therefore, my age in 2050 will 45 years old.

Last Step for Design: Evaluating

During these past few months, I have finally got to the last step of creating my design company: Evaluating myself.

Here are the things I did well:

I finished filming my video in time so I can edit it on Premiere. I also finished the things on my plan above. I learned that if you want to finish your video in time, you should borrow all the cameras first so you won’t need to rush at the end. I think having a very detailed plan is also a way to create a successful video. Keep changing and editing the plan is a good idea while you are doing a design project.

Here are the improvements I should make:

For improvements, I think I should learn more about how to use premiere because I have a lot of problems during the edit of my video. I think knowing more about how to edit is more important than filming the video. I also need to improve at putting my video in order so it makes editing more easier.
