This week, we had a guest speaker today. This guest speaker’s name is David Livingstone. He was a child soldier and he has escaped and made a organisation which is helping child soldiers out of their very dangerous circumstances. The organisation’s name is Salt & Light®. He has been a child soldier and had to go through his early days. These circumstances include killing his friends, shooting with guns and walking for one week without a break. This was very hurting for me because I have never knew these very violent things were happening in the world and even to kids. He has said that these kids were not able to go to school and have education. These people will grow up without knowing how to even read or write. This means that child soldiers is a very big problem because they cannot go to school. If these people were able to escape the war zone, they would need to walk to the central city. If they go thought that, they would be arrested because the government will think that you are a spy who is spying on the central city. This would mean going to a war prison. They mostly die in the prison camp because of starvation but this person was very lucky and was let go by a old man in the prison. Now that I have listened to David Livingstone, I have now felt like I would want people to take action into child soldiers. I feel that other people need to know about this act and everyone is going to make actions to help these children escape the war and put them into school to have education have a great future. This blog post is not about telling you about the guest speaker. This blog post is to RAISE AWARENESS in child soldiers. I think this is a very important task to do even before solving other problems. These children has a future.
In our Unit of Inquiry, we are working a project (My project is the picture on the top). This is a peace flag that I have made. It was also my first project to use the sewing machine. I sewed most of my things using my hand. It was really cool to use the sewing machine. The sewing machine was really cool because it all moved my itself. I have only saw my mom using the sewing machine but this time I did it by myself. I have researched a lot of peace signs and other things related to peace. I have used cloth markers and also used felt and clothes. We made our backgrounds by dipping paint in our piece.
This week, the whole Grade 5 went to camp at Tai Tam. I think that camp was fun but some parts I felt were very boring and not fun for me. Things that were very fun were when we were able to make fire with metal. Parts that I didn’t like is like the food there. I really hated the food there. The spaghetti was overcooked and the cereal was actually not good at all. The food that I liked the most was the rice that we ate on the first day.
Something that challenged me is when we had to wash our own dishes. I have learnt some ways to wash the dishes. I have never washed many dishes in my life.
On Tuesday May 16th, We had our coding class. In coding class, we adding on to what we are doing on Challenge 2. In Challenge 2, we have to make a code that draws words. In my project, I have finished drawing a A, B, C, D, and O (This is the Link to the project). I am really looking forward to finishing my project for Challenge 2. At school, We are learning about the coordinates and other things that you might need for the code. It was really easy for me because I have done the same thing in a place where you learn how to code. Instead of making more words, I have been helping others to make their code better and also solve problems in their code. If I have more time, I would really like to make my codes better and make the words look realistic.
Overall, I think I have been helping others and our class has been cooperating and they are also curious about for the code.
On Tuesday, May 9th, Our learning buddies and other classes from Grade 1 performed a spotlight at the LLAC. I really think that the our buddies including the other classes did a amazing job at performing and showing what they learnt about. They have learnt about the the environment and how they can help to save nature. They told a story about villagers in india trying to help save the trees. My learning buddy really preformed well. He was really committed on what he was doing in the performance. They also used puppets for some parts of the story.
Overall, I think our learning buddies (including the other classes and my learning buddy) did a very good job on presenting their work by making a spotlight.
We used scratch to make a tessellation. The tessellation can be made forever but if it touches the edge, it ruins the tessellation. On the first time I just made a shape but I tried and tried and thinked and actually, I made the tessellation. The hardest part was to calculate the degrees and the steps to calculate. I used the clues that Ms Fung told us. I learnt about the codes that makes the code. Because I finished the challenge. I am trying to make arrangements to make it much more creative and much more fun.
In PA (performing arts), We are doing dance unit which we make our own dance with a group. With the dance, we are going to make a light painting. A light painting is made in a dark room and for this to work out, we need light to make the painting (Glow Sticks) and stick them onto your body. We need to take photographs and this will make the light painting. We will need a app to make the light painting. One app that you can also use is Light Bomber. At our school, we are focusing on patterns and shapes that we can make in the light painting.
We had a process to make our dance. First, we learnt how to draw the people in the drawing. Our teacher told us not to draw stick mans and not to draw too realistic that will take a hour to draw. She teached us a simple way to draw people. It was easier to see and it was really neat when she showed us. Using what we learnt in the first part, we used a storyboard to plan our ideas and bring them together. In the storyboard, we drew how the dance is shown and the important details can be written on the bottom of the drawing. When our group finished the storyboard, it was very neat and everyone could have understand it. When we finished the storyboard, we rehearsed with our group. We did it many times and as we practiced, we got better and better. Next class, we will be able to make the light painting using a app. I am very excited to see what our painting will look like when we finished.
I think the technology like iPhone and Mac made our life easier and better for human to live.
Firstly, technology can be used on communicating with other people. People can use Email or phone calls to communicate. These Email and phone calls takes seconds to communicate with other people. It can also be environmentally friendly because you don’t have to buy paper every time. You can also send photos without printing them out.
Secondly, you can use computer or technology to make things. For example, you can make a poster, blueprint, drawing, etc. These things may be faster made because you can type the words. It is easier to make because you don’t have to draw every picture or write every word in the poster or whatever you’re trying to make. If you erase and erase again and again, the mark might stay forever and it might not be neat.
Lastly, you can do research on technology. It has to be faster than books or other ways to research because for books, you have to look for the right book to research or the appropriate book to research on. Technology is very convenient than other ways to research because there is tons of websites that tells one topic. There are so many that you can get more info in a limited time.
Overall, I think people should use technology in their daily life to help them make their life a easier place
From Wed, March 29 to Fri, March 31 all the grade 4 went camping at Treasure Island. We were separated into groups of 12 or 13 and we did activities that we cannot do at Hong Kong Island. We went to the beach, learnt about the ecosystems that is connected to our PYP, Sharing the planet.
What I really enjoyed about camp is that we could do activities that we normally don’t do, like going to a Wetland and study about the plants that live there and what can happen when the weather changes. I think the activity that I enjoyed the most is raft building Sandy shores because I liked it when we got to go to the ocean and played with the water.
An activity that I experienced for the first time was the Raft Building (picture on top) because we got to make our own raft and tried to use it in the ocean. Our raft did float and move, but it was very unstable. From what we built, we also learnt some ways to tie ropes. The materials we used is 4 to 5 ropes, 3 bamboo sticks and 3 tires.
I will remember when we had cold showers because it was very cold. I would also remember when we had Breakfast, Lunch and dinner at Mav’s because I liked the food there. There was pasta, cereal and other yummy food.
What I found challenging is when we had to sleep because I never slept in a sleeping bag. Sleeping bags are not very comfortable but can be very warm. It was warmer than the normal bed that I sleep in at home. When I came back from camp, it felt very comfortable when I got to sleep in a normal bed.
I learnt about the ecosystems and how to save the environment and nature. It was very fun because we got to do things that we don’t normally do in our daily lives. I learnt how to surf and learnt and played games that I don’t play or I didn’t know about. Hajime:)
Last week, our class went down to the library to look at the Grade 10 exhibition. The grade 10 exhibition is a personal project that the grade 10’s made.
We saw some creative ideas and some people used technology like the computer and coded video games. I remember one of the student used a bicycle and made a machine to make electricity so we can charge the computer. It was really hard than I thought it would be. I also remember somebody using Sketchup to design the house and made a small sculpture out of it. I think if these creative ideas be able to spread around the world, It might help the future a better place to live.
