16 Bar Melody Criterion C&D

One of the main things I tried keeping consistent in my melody is the structure. We can see that in the piano section, for three bars, I have a half note and then a short melody. The same melody is repeated for the next two bars except the melody is one note higher. Then for bar four I have a melody consisting of only quarter notes. This is repeated up to bar twelve. I decided to have my piano section this way because it gives the audience a sense of repetition which makes them feel more comfortable with my melody. Then, for the bass part of the piano section, I have half notes chords all the way. The chords are the same all the way through the song until the last bar. Again, this is to make the audience more comfortable with my music. In my flute section I decided to repeat my first four bars in bar nine to twelve. I decided to do this because it sort of creates a chorus. It is one of the most memorable parts of my music so the audience can easily remember part of the chorus. In some parts of my melody I put a F or a mF in my flute or piano section and put a P or a mP in the other section. I did this because in some parts I feel like my music would sound better if they focus on one part of the music at a time. Next, every four bars (bar #: four, eight, not sixteen) I have a staccato on my quarter notes. I decided to do this because it effectively indicates that a new section of the music is starting. In my bass part of the piano, the first chords of every section starts with a slur. This again helps the audience infer that a new section of the song is starting. It also makes the music flow well. My use of  crescendo and decrescendo also help the music sound nicer. Most of the time, the crescendos and decrescendos lead to a F, mF, P, mP. it is either to make the audience feel whats coming or something unexpected to make my music sound more interesting. The last thing I will be talking about is fermatas. I decided to end my music with a fermata because it really marks the end of my music effectively.

I think that something that worked really well in my music was the last two bars. My last two bars really flow well and sound really nice to indicate an ending. I believe that this is due to the use of accents and the slur in my chords. A that I think would probably be one my weaknesses would be the third section of my piano melody. I thought it went to fast and it was to rough. I overcame this by adding slurs which made it sound smoother and nicer. To create this piece of music, I went through many steps. The very first thing I did was thinking of a melody the would sound nice. Once I sort of knew where I was headed, I added chords to my bass piano section. Then I thought of short melodies that would fit well in my overall melody. These melodies were divided by phrases one two three and four. Then I found the right notes for my overall melody. After listening to my music a couple of times. I noted down some places that sounded rough or that didn’t flow well with the music. I used accents, dynamics, slurs and crescendos and decrescendos. Once that was done, I listened to my music a couple more times to fix any thing I did not like.  I had my brothers and parents listen to it as well so I could see what my music sounded like in other peoples ears. After receiving feedback, I made final changes to finalize my music. This was how my music was made.

What did you learn about Finale?
I learned how to use articulation, expression and how to add slurs, crescendo and decrescendo. To add articulation you have to click the articulation option, click where you want articulation and then choose what type of articulation you want. To add expression, the concept is the same. It is the same process. To add slurs, you double click where the slur starts and double click where the slur ends. For crescendo, you do the same thing. Double click where it starts and double click where it ends. For decrescendo, you double click where it ends and then double click where it starts. This is what I learned from Finale Notepad.

Did you find Finale easy to use?
At first it is quite difficult to use because there are so many things that are kind of hidden and you need to search them to find them. Then, you kind of get used to it and it is very manageable. Writing music would probably be much easier to write on paper but the thing that it very good in Finale Notepad is that you can play the music and see what it sounds like. This helps you see if anything sounds weird or unusual. Sometimes, it can be very frustrating but then you get used to it and you pretty much know where everything is.

Is there anything you found frustrating or difficult to do or find?
As I said above, at the start it is very hard to find things and you spend so much time navigating with no result. But then eventually you find it and it becomes much more clear and you know what you are doing. What I still wasn’t able to find was how to delete measures. There is a place where it says ‘delete measure but it doesn’t let me. It took me lots of time to understand how it works. Now, I am able to use Finale Notepad pretty well.

Is Finale easier than writing out the music using paper and pencil?
I think that at first it is easier to use paper and pencil. Then, when you start when you start getting used to Finale Notepad it is the same. It just depends on ones preference. What I prefer to use is Finale Notepad because you can listen to what you have made so you can listen as you are creating.

Music Line 32 Criterion D Reflection

I think that my assessment was not very successful. I think that when I was playing at home, I was playing better than when I was playing in the test. I think that is was caused by multiple things. Firstly, my saxophone at school is different from the one I use at home. I was practicing  with my home saxophone and I didn’t have much time to adapt to the school saxophone. Next time, to avoid this from happening I could use my school saxophone to practice more often. Another thing that could have made it harder for me was that I was just coming back from the break and I hadn’t played my saxophone for 2 weeks so I had to practice a lot in one day to start playing my saxophone again right where I left off. That is not so important because I was sick before the break and I could have  made an arrangement to  play it right before the break.

For this playing test, I practiced in an unusual way. because I didn’t have much time to prepare, I practiced the fingering of the music so I could be familiar with it. Once I was familiar with  it, I played B flat major a couple times to get familiar with blowing into my saxophone again. Then, instead of going measure by measure, I played it all together and then go over the measures I had trouble with. Then, I tried playing all together and I fixed the little problems I had. When that was done, I just practiced playing the whole song until the day.

I that during this performance, the most successful part of it was note accuracy. I believe this because I hit every note in this performance. Although I did not link each note very well, I played all the notes that were on the sheet of music. The least successful part of this assessment for me was my breathing. Because the tenor saxophone is a big instrument that requires a lot of air, I was breathing a lot and inconsistently  so sometimes in my performance there were some small gaps because I was breathing at the wrong time. To improve my level of skill as a musician, I think I need to do 2 things mainly. First, I need to practice more consistently at home. Second, I need to take more from my music lesson. If I practice more at home, I will be more familiar to the music and participate more in my classes. Overall, I think that I have lots of room for improvement for this summative.

 

Scarborough Fair Reflection

I think that on this playing test I did not too bad. I was practicing only this part for about 10 minutes every two days. I started by practicing 2 bars at a time. Then doubling it to 4, etc. I tried to focus a lot on where I should breathe because I had trouble with that. In my performance, I think I could have improved on the breathing. My breathing is very obvious in my final recording which makes my music sound worse. I think I could have stooped this by rehearsing the performance all in one go a bit more. This could have given me more opportunities to think when I can breathe in my performance.

I think that it was exactly what I expected. Not that easy but still very achievable. I wasn’t expecting something extremely difficult but I wasn’t expecting it to be easy either. Getting the lowest notes in the piece of music was simpler than I thought it would be. At first I thought I would need to spend a lot of time but it turned out it was quite easy. Something that was more difficult than I expected was breathing in my performance. I never really consider breathing when I play but when I listen to my recordings, it turns out it’s crucial.

Something I learned while rehearsing and executing this piece of music was that in music you need to consider every single factor. If one little thing isn’t correct, your whole recording can thrown off. It is crucial to practice every single part of the song such as breathing, practicing rests, flats and sharps, understanding how to play every single note, dynamics, accents, etc. All of these little factors can affect a music recording.

I think that my performance was okay. It wasn’t bad but it could have been relatively better. If I started practicing only the song earlier then I could have been more comfortable with executing every single note. I think that I should have paid a little more attention to the key signature because now that i look back, I think that I missed some. I think I missed the forte and piano (dynamics) during the performance. I missed some which I shouldn’t have. I learned that when I play music, I will record the piece as many times as it takes to get my performance at a good level. This was my music reflection for my recording of Scarborough fair.

End of Year Music Reflection

Playing Test
On the playing test I think that overall I could have done better. Starting with the concert Bb scale. I had practiced at home 10 minutes 1/3 days and I could play it well for quite a long time. Then that day I got into class and I couldn’t play one of the notes anymore (G). Because the sound of that note was bad, the surrounding notes were pretty bad as well so one part of the scale was completely messed up. Otherwise the rest of  the scale I played was ok. My notes were connecting, I was getting the right sound, overall pretty good.
I got a 4.

The second scale I played was concert Eb. I was pretty good with playing this scale all along. I was connecting notes together well enough to make the music sound good. I knew every single not and none of the notes was reached difficultly in this scale. I think I could have done a bit better on the timing of the note. I was playing different notes for a different length even when they were both half notes or quarter notes. This was kind of a problem. Overall, I think I did ok but I could have done a bit better.
I got a 6.

The third scale I played was concert F. I had the same problem as the first scale here. I had a problem with the note G throughout the whole song. This was again a big problem for when I was nearing the top notes. It bothered me a lot in my playing and once again, decreased my overall performance. I think that on the other side of things, I played the scale better than I played concert Bb. My notes were connecting better and it was a bit easier for me to connect notes to the G note. Overall I don’t think I did to well on this scale.
I got a 1.

The fourth and final song we had to play was Loch Lomond. I think that this was the song I played the best out of all the songs we had to play. I reached all the notes more easily and I could get all the # in properly. I did very well on anticipating the coming notes. Although this was the one I was struggling with the most before the performance  day, I performed the best on this one. There were still some problems with connecting the notes. I connected almost all of the but I think just like the other scales, I could do a bit better.
I think I deserve a 5

 

Theory Test
I think that I did really well on the theory test. I studied a lot at home on this test because I wanted to focus more on the theory test than on the playing  test. I did this because I a new to instrument so I knew I had more hope in the theory test so I studied a lot and made sure I knew how to do most of it.

The part I kind of messed up on the theory test is the very start where we had to count and add up rhythms. It was what I thought to be the easiest part on the theory test at the start of the year. Because it was easy for me before, I decided not to study it as much which was clearly a mistake. When I came in to the test I thought I was doing it correctly but it turns out I did most of it wrong. That is probably the main lesson I learned from this test. Always study even what you think you know well.

I think that I did good improvement on this test with the key signatures. At the start of the year I had no clue what they were so I got most of the test correct except for that part. This time I really spent time learning and understand it. I did much better on key signatures this time. I am happy about this because it shows good improvement over the school year of music. Overall, I think I did really well on this theory test.

Reflection on Composition Unit

I think that on my melody Idid alright. From the comments I got, I think that I should  have used dynamics. I completely forgot about using dynamics. I had people mention once or twice but I don’t know why, I didn’t think of using dynamics.

I think that I chose an interesting melody/. That is what I thought personally and what other people thought. When I made my melody I tried to pass the sense of excitement.

Some other popular comments that I got on my melody is flowing. People said that in some places I make it flow really well but in other places I could have added slurs to make it sound better. Also next time I should try to avoid big bounces to make it flow more. The last thing is tempo. I had a couple comments about tempo so I should keep that in mid for next year.

Overall I think I did quite well. I really enjoyed this composition unit.
