Waste Not, want Not III

Participation: My participation was great because I was always self-motivated and on-task. I was concentrating on my task most of the time although I got distracted by people around me. I contributed the most during group work and I constantly ask questions from my peers and teachers.  (6/8)

Collaboration/Communication: My collaboration with teachers and group mates were great as we discussed together and contributed many great ideas on how to make a perfect package for the apple, we listened to one’s opinion, combined all of our different ideas and divided our job equally. I thought we could have communicate more in order to complete tasks on time. (see link to photo) (5/8)

Effort: The effort I put into my work today was satisfactory as I have spent a lot of time completing most of the requirements (see blog 1 and 2) (6)

Time management: My time management was satisfactory as I didn’t manage to finish all the tasks yet. (5) I need to make sure I spend my time wisely on every task instead of using all the time I had on one small task.

Waste Not, Want Not II

I made a 3D model based on the apple basket in the previous post using a software called Sketchup. We have learnt how to make 3D models with an accurate length and height. It also provided how big the object is comparing to a human.  I was confused and frustrated when we first learnt how to make a 3d model with this application because I kept deleting stuff by accident and I had to remake them. After playing around with this application, I found it really efficient using this application than drawing the net of a 3D object, measuring it and cutting it out. I have improve our design by adding a hole on one of the sides so it looks more attractive.

How can our understanding of geometry helps to reduce our carbon footprint?
The understanding of geometry helps to save the environment. For instance, if you were to put an object which is round for example an orange in a container, you might want to put it into a  sphere since it fits perfectly and it’s a better use of space rather than putting it into a cylinder. Besides from that, it is also a better use of paper because it takes less paper to make a sphere than a cylinder. If we understand the creation of 3d models, we could choose containers for objects wisely and save the environment.

Waste Not, Want Not

Today we were assigned to make a package for an apple. Picture shown below
The reason why we made our apple basket this way is because the handle make it easy to hold. As you can see, the flap on top makes it easy to open and it could be secure at the same time. It is somehow attractive because we add a little bit of brown to the cover so it looks like the color of an apple skin but not environmental friendly because we used a lot of tape to make the container more protective and durable. We don’t want to make the container to big, there is just enough space for one apple to fit in.

16 Bar Melody Composition Reflection

We have been working on a music summative task recently which we have to create a 16 bar melody.
This is my first draft:

I decided to use piano and c major for my song because I am familiar with C major key. However, later on I realised we were required to use two instruments, one for the chords and one for the main melody. I chose piano and flute for the final piece because the sound of piano blend well with the flute. There is a pattern for the chords: chord C major →chord A major, → chord F major → chord G Major → chord C major…..keep repeating till the end of the song. I chose to use these chords because most of the melody in one bar matches the chord.
For example:Screen Shot 2015-03-03 at 5.18.03 pm

As you can see from my first draft, each phrase starting from the bar 5 to the end of the song are following the pattern of the first phrase(bar 1-4). There are some slightly changes in each phrase, some are more complex but they are all based on the first phrase. I add a “climate” and some harmonies to certain part of my song(shown below) to make it sounds better and more interesting. Harmony makes the song sounds more complex but beautiful textures in music.

This is the original ending of the song. Celini gave me some advices and feedbacks for my song. She said the ending was too rushed.

This is my final ending of the song. The very last note of the phrase is a reasonably long one, so that the rhythm sounds properly finished. The form of this piece of music is like a bus going down the hill and then up the mountain and then down the mountain again. As you can see from my final piece, Since my song is in the key of C, the note C and the C major chord feel like home while we’re listening to the song. Home is usually a good place to start the song, and it’s almost always the right place to end. So right away, you know you want to start and end your song with the chord c major. My song has a polyphonic texture meaning there are one or more instruments used. Flute alone has a soft texture while piano has a thick texture and interdependent harmonically yet independent in rhythm and contour. The two instruments create an effect of overlapping. Since this is a soft lullaby song, I decided to start off this song with mezzo-piano and then slowly it gets louder and when it hits the climate, it was the strongest and loudest, and then it gets softer at the end.

Here is my final piece

Peer Evaluation:

Monica: I like the use of dynamics where she starts off the song really strong and ends it soft. I like how she tried something different than c major, she used G major as the key. Besides, the melody will sound very consonant because most of the notes belong to the chord.

Kate: I like how Kate start and end the song with a C. I think that the chords goes well with the melody at the beginning but doesn’t go well at the end, I can hear two separate parts playing at the same time. I think it would be better if she used keyboard instead of piano because I don’t think it is necessary to add a bass clef.

Gitanjali: I like how the use of dynamics and articulation, the slurs and staccatos are nicely placed, it helps to make the song sounds more interesting. The sound of piano and clarinet blend well together and it creates a really strong melody and thick texture. However, in my opinion, I think the melody doesn’t flow well, it would sound better if the notes in the melody are carefully chosen. People might find it difficult to catch up with her song because the melody is inconsistent. Overall, I like her composition.
