Today at school, we spent one period transitioning to grade 7. Basically, we went to one of the grade 7′s classes, and the teacher explained how the grade 7 works. She said that the most important thing is to be independent and organize. She also explained us how the grades works, and how the classes will be organized, i think some of the advice that the homeroom teacher told us was really helpful, because this prepares us going to grade 7. But what I am worried about the most is the grades, because i think that the grades are very strict, for example if we get a low mark in our report card (3 or below), then we will get in trouble.

I am looking forward to grade 7, but unfortunately grade 6 is almost over, and I am quite sad. But anyways, I think everyone will be looking forward to the summer holidays.

The past few weeks, we’ve been working on our Exhibition. In the beginning, we chose our top 3-4 topics. I chose:

1. Technology

2. Social Media

3. The Feminist Movement

After choosing your top choices, the teachers were deciding which group each student should be in. Later, they told us which group we are in, they also told us our group members. The topic that I am doing is Feminist Movement. Although I didn’t get my first choice, but i am still happy in my focus area. The group members that are in my group are Alyssa and Cherilyn, I am also happy with my group members. We discussed our purpose, and we also refined it. Our purpose is to understand how the feminist movement of the past has shaped our life today. We also thought of our Lines of Inquiry and our Guiding Questions. We also did our general background research.

So thanks for reading

My thoughts: I thought that the SLLR help me understand my learning process and more about the IB program. I think the most difficult part was showing and explaining the work i’e done to my parents, but i think next time i should be more prepared and i should speak more fluently. Overall, i think i did a good job explaining the subjects to my parents, because he understood the things that i’ve explain to him.

My dad’s review: Leah has come a long way. She has picked up a number of new skills to become a better student and a more effective presenter. I was particularly happy to see that Leah showed enthusiasm and initiative to organize her discussion in an orderly fashion. Though a bit shy at first, she was able to clearly highlight the different classes she attended and how they would help her to become a more well-rounded person. With respect to her key strengths, I can see Leah being very positive in approaching her school work, showing willingness to learn and not being afraid to use different tools to show her ideas. In terms of weaknesses, Leah would need to focus on improving her Chinese more. Overall, the presentation was well executed. Good job.

Teachers, parents, and students also went to the blessing. Bill Helin made 2 totem poles, and they are placed in the front of our school. Basically Bill Helin, his family and a few students blessed the totem poles. There was incense, dancing, and also chinese drumming. It started getting emotional when our head principal, Mr. McMaster said a touching speech. Lots of people were so touched that they cried, he also cried himself. Bill Helin also gave us a speech about button blankets, and how his mom told him that he should give the blanket to someone who is worthy. He gave the button blanket to William (He takes care of the school facilities). I will always remember that day.

Today, March 20th, 2012. CDNIS had our 3rd Alan Dick Memorial Walk. Although, I never met him before, I think he is a caring, funny, responsible school principal that died in 2009 from a heart attack. Alan Dick likes the color pink, so we had to wear pink T-shirts in a memory of him, and the school handed out light pink t- shirts to wear.

At 8:00 am, we walked down to the sports ground from our school. When we arrived, we sang The Canadian and the Chinese anthem, we also sang his favorite song called the Hoky Pokey. Then the whole school started walking around the tracks on the field. We walked for about 1 hour and a half. Our school hopes that if we combine everybody’s walking distance, it could cover the distance from one side of Canada to the other. My friends and I walked 9-10 laps. After walking on the tacks, it was lunch, we all had a hot dog, a cookie and a banana (that time I was starving). After eating, we watched some performances, includes band, choir, etc. Around 11:45, we started walking back to CDNIS.

When we got back, it was around 12:00, and it was almost time for Chinese. Although, it was tiring, I still enjoyed it. (: And here is a picture of Alan Dick:

This week, our group, who were TIffany, Rachel, Keona, Anna, Cherie and I did a presentation about a book. The book was called Ties That Bind, Ties That Break. Here’s a picture of the book:

We also did a movie trailer about it.

Main Characters:

Ailin: A young girl who refuses to have her feet bound as a ancient chinese tradition in the 1910s of China.

Second sister: Ailin’s older sister who has her feet bound and is married.

Father: Ailin’s father who encourages to leave the choice to Ailin with having her feet bound or not.

Big Uncle: Who forces Ailin to have her feet bound so Ailin could marry Hanwei.

Mother: Ailin’s mother who tries every way to encourage Ailin to bound her feet as a ancient chinese tradition.

Grandmother: Wants Aileen to bound her feet.

Recommendation:

“Ties that Bind, Ties that Break” is an easy-reading book, very simple but enthralling

It contains a lot of great plots like when Ailin refuses to bind her feet.

If we were to rate this book out of 10, we would give it a 8/10

If you were interested in a adventurous kind of book this would be the right book for you!

It only took 2 days to finish the filming and editing. It was a lot of fun making this Ties That Bind, Ties That Break trailer.

We also watched other presentations and trailers from other classmates. They did a presentations on Transall Saga, The Devil Boy and Brains Winter. Their presentations were all very interesting. I think the best presentation that I saw was Transall Saga. Many students used multimedia to represent what they had learned from their books. Happy reading!

Hi,

Recently we had our fitness test. We did 12- minute run, standing long jump, beep test and sit ups.

12 minute run:

For the 12 minute run, we have to see how many laps can we run in the gym in 12 minutes. We also have a partner to help you record how many laps we had run.

Standing Long Jump:

For the standing long jump, we have to see how far you can jump. Basically you have to jump at the starting point, and see how far you can jump, like I said in the beginning.

Beep Test

For the Beep test. We have to run across the gym when there is a “beep” sound, and it gets faster and faster.

Although it was tiring, but I had a great time.

To earn money for the fundraiser, we had sales, such as bake sales, games, etc. Our group chose to do a Rummage sale for stationaries and books. Although not a lot of people came to our sale, but we still passed our goal.

Our goal was to have $300, and we found out that we earned $314 including the petty cash. YAY!!! (: Next time, if we have a rummage sale, I think we could improve by finding better things to sell, and manage the sale more efficiently.
