Four teams of scientists are racing to reach the bottom of the Marinas Trench, the deepest point in any ocean on Earth. The last time this was achieved was 1951. The Marinas Trench is seven miles deep- it is deeper than Mount Everest is tall!
Here are the four subs that are trying to win this race.
The Triton Sub (Top Left)- This three-man sub has 360 degree views out of its windows-and it is bright yellow! It is expected to take 120 minutes to reach the bottom of the trench. The US company that owns this sub wants to take members of the public to the bottom of the Marinas Trench. The round trip will cost 159 million dollars!
The Virgin Sub (Bottom Right)- This sub is based on the design of a plane. If this sub reaches the bottom of the Marinas Trench, it will be the first one-man sub to do so.
The Doer Sub (Top Left)- The backers of this sub don’t care about coming first in this race. They only want to create something that will advance science. The sub is still being built, but will have robotic arms when completed. It will take 90 minutes to reach the bottom.
The Mystery Sub (Bottom Left)- This sub is being backed by James Cameron, the famous movie director. He has kept all his plans secret, but apparently wants to pilot the sub himself.
This race demonstrates the different perspectives of the backers of these teams. While they are competing in the same race, they all have different motives for doing so.
Which sub do you think will win this race?

Hi extreme 18
Did you see the video and photo update from the National Geographic website? http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2012/03/pictures/120308-james-cameron-deepest-mariana-trench-challenger-science-sub/
I like the photo of the vertical sub – must be akin to astronauts blasting off to be zooming down in the water like that!
It’s interesting how commercial and scientific interests can sometimes come together to increase our understanding of our world.
Hi, my name is Ts (short for Tin Sum) I live in Beijing and go to a international school call WAB. I actually come from Hong Kong, so I’m very glad that I can comment on your blog. Your blog is really cool, please visit my blog and comment on it too

Hi I’m Emily from WAB in Beijing China I really like your post.
I think the Doer sub will win cause it has a much shorter time then all the others. Maybe you could write on this post which sub you think will win. But other then that it’s great.
Can you visit my blog were doing Exibition which is were we need to help the world in some way if you want to know more go to my Exibition post. Here is the website http://blogs.wab.edu/19emilyc/.
Emily
This is an interesting topic. My money is on the Triton sub because they have a commercial plan to take tourists later. Perhaps they will find another large tuna.
What will they do when they get there? They will be much closer to the earth’s mantle than we are on land.
This race is very cool. I think its ether the mystery sub or the Virgin sub. I think the plane based sub might have more speed than other subs. How did you get this information?
Awesome!
Eric
