Grade 5 Review

Field Trips

During grade five we had lots of field trips all of our field trips related to our units of inquiry. Where we are in place in time we had art jam art jam is a art facility where they hive you as much paint as you want of any color then a huge canvas we drew portraits of our selves. How we organize our selves’ landfill we actually got to drive on top of a landfill I noticed that there was not any bad smell at all. Then we went to Eco Park they educated us about Hong Kong waste management and showed us the most common types of trash and showed us the recycling plant for plastic we got see the hole process. Where we are in place and time we had dig day and the history museum.

Camp

Towards the end of the year we went on camp the camp was ran by a group of instructors. We stayed in dormitories on Chung Chow islands during the camp we went on a knight walk in the mountains, we saw lots of wild frogs jumping around the path. We also found a stick bug in the trees. A stick bug looks like a twig in the trees. I thought camp was very different from Hong Kong Island because Chung Chow was mostly forests and had lots of wild life.

Activities

For sports day we went to Stanly Ho Sports Ground we played capture the flag, tug war, ball throwing, hop sack race the 800-meter sprint and the 100-meter sprint. Sports day was really exciting because we do not get to compete against kids in other classes except for intramurals.

Unit of Inquiry

The unit How We Organize was focused on the environment, that is why we made a concert about saving the environment we sang a class song a grade song and then we presented skits that we made in groups. My skit was a poem about trash in the sea killing fish and birds; I enjoyed telling my poem because I like to perform on stage.

Languages

This year was my first year to learn Chinese and French so it was a lot of languages to learn.  I did not mind that I had to learn 2 brand new languages because I like learning new and comparing grammar patterns and words. To learning Chinese surprised me because it was not hard as I expected the reason why it was not as hard as expected is because as a method of learning they showed us pinion. Pinion is English letters from the alphabet that make Chinese sounds, on top of the letters they put lines that go up down flat to show you how to pronounce the word that seems very creative to me. French was easier then I expected because we were taught with hand signals and were not allowed to speak English.

Numeracy

This year in math’s we looked at a lot of problem solving I think the key rules are there is no order in what you do and try to look from lots of different angles. All ways when I first try to solve a problem it seems easy but after a wile I find errors and get really frustrated that is why MR. Lalwani showed us a strategize that takes a long time but does not have errors it is eliminate the impossible I think that is a very clever strategy.

Art

In art we studied used the style of an artist named Wassily Kandinsky. His style uses lots of random shapes like circles and squares colored with bright colors. His art seemed very different from other artists in the time that he live because most of the other artists drew darker pictures that usually included faces and objects, that they are looking at. Trying to use his style art and making a drawing was not hard because all you have to do is make lots of circles or squares and fill in the whole canvas with bright colors. In art we also

Physical Education

This year in PE we played lots of different sports some of the sports we played were basketball, hand ball, soccer and American Football. Every term we took tests to see what level you where at, the tests were beep test, 12 minute run, sit up test and standing long jump. I liked that every month are so we would change to a different sport the reason why I like changing sports is because if a person does not like one of the sports they are playing, instead of having to wait for a really long time until; they can change the sport that they are plying they just wait until the next month.

Assessment

To show our parents what level we were at academically we had a three way learning review. The 3 ways are parent student and teacher. During the 3way learning review we looked at my portfolio we talked about what I need to work on and my goals for the rest of the year. I think the 3 way learning review is important because there are not many other ways that are parents can see what level we are at especially being able to talk to my teacher and ask him questions about where I am.

Learner Profile

This is my first year using learner profiles. Learner profiles are Caring, Thinker, Risk Taker, Knowledgeable, Balanced, Open Minded, Principled, Reflective, Inquirer and Communicator. Learner profiles are almost like goal setters and they show you where your skills are and you need to work on o think I am an inquirer.

Expectations in Grade 5

During grade 5 I think we were mainly supposed to be principled and responsible because if you are principled and responsible you would be trust worthy and you would no from right or wrong. I think that expecting students to be principled and responsible is a reasonable thing to ask because from the time you come to Canadian school and most schools they teach you responsibility and how to be principled.
