MYP Drama Grade 8 Criteria C – Assessment

Before the unit begun I was partially excited and nervous for the improvisation unit because I think That improvisation is a very important skill that can be used not only in drama but on the other hand I was bad at quickly coming up with a story. At the beginning of the unit I was very bad at creating ideas on the spot so I wasn’t able to give my partners an offer also even if I did think of an idea I wasn’t confidant enough to say it because I was to scared of it being bad. But through out the unit I slowly go better and better at creating ideas from scratch and being confidant with them.

I think that one of the biggest failure moments I have had in the improvisation unit was at the starts of the unit when we played a game where the whole class told a story where each line had to start with the letter after the person before you had, starting with “A”. I was third person, which gave me the letter “C”. The two people before me where talking about school but then when it came to my turn I had no ideas what to say so I panicked and said “Chocolate is Good”. This was a huge failure because it was completely irrelevant to the story we had created and it did not develop it at all. Now at the end of the Unit there are a couple of ways I think I could have fixed what I did. First, instead of just rushing to say a line I could have stopped, taken a breath and let myself think, because if I stopped and thought for a second I think I could have come up with I good line that was relevant and started with C. Second, I could have made a sound that started with C that could be used before any sentence.

One of the success moments I had was when I was working with Kowin and he brought up Chinese noodles and started talking about cheep deals that you could buy noodles. Because Kowin and I had not planned any of this I had to quickly plan out a response to Kowin. Instead of saying yes that seems like a good discount I further developed and added a bit of the twist to the story by saying that I run McDonalds and that we where moving In to the Noodle business and were going to sell noodles I lot cheaper then the price Kowin had said. I think that this was my success moment because it was the first time that I spontaneously came up with and offer that developed the story.

After playing the park bench activity with Bianca Mrs. Pierce gave me the feedback saying that I was bulldozing too much and should have accepted what my partner was saying. I think this was because instead of improvising on the spot and listening to what my partner was saying and developing from that right at the beginning of our skit I created a story in my head and tried to carry it out without even listening to what Bianca was saying and just trying to follow through with the plot that I came up with.

Since the start of the unit not only have my improvisations has greatly developed but also my self-confidence. At the start of the unit one of my problems was that even if I did come up with and idea I wasn’t really confidant enough to say it because I was scared that it would be bad but bow at the end of the unit i am confidant with my own ideas.

Drama Refleciton

1. How do you feel about your product (the performance)? Write 3 adjectives (describing words) that summarize how you feel and then discuss in depth.

I am glad because our performance went very smooth with almost no mistakes. Before our performance I was so nervous because I thought I was going to mess up but I think we had practiced our lines and every part of our performance so many times that choreography, lines, expression and movement almost feel natural and I didn’t have to think about what to do or say next. I am proud because our group spent so much time practicing and planning for our performance and we worked really hard

2. What part of the process do you feel you were strongest at? Explain and give specific examples of moments in rehearsals to back up what you are saying.

Vocal Expression

During our practice we spent a lot of time practicing projecting our voices and made sure instead of just reading our lines we added the four P’s

Power, pitch, pace and pause

Because we rehearsed the 4Ps a lot, in our performance I think our lines sounded like they had a lot of expression.

3. What parts of the process did you struggle with (NOTE: this is not the performance). Again, give specific examples.

We had trouble making the fight scene because e couldn’t decide on what to put in it.

4. How did you use feedback to help you get better? Did you use the comments your teacher gave you to reflect upon? Did you seek out feedback elsewhere? It is a REQUIREMENT that you show that you responded to feedback and used it to get better.

We got feedback from Mrs. Pierce saying that we did not have any expression when other people were in our group were talking. I found it really hard to add expressions while others were talking because I had already heard the lines so much I couldn’t act surprised. I solved this by going through out each Line and what my expression would be. Then I memorized and practiced those expressions

5. Were you proud of the end performance? Which parts in particular?

I was proud about our speaking because we included the 4Ps making our speaking entertaining for the audience.

6. Did things go wrong in the performance? How did you and/or you group cope with this? Did you learn anything by having this happen?

During our performance we skipped half of our fight scene probably because we were nervous onstage.  To fix with this we added in the parts that we missed at the end.

7. What are the biggest skills as a drama student that you think you have learnt during this Unit?

I learned a lot about expressions in drama. But I mostly learned a lot about what is mellow-drama and the standard characteristics of hero’s, villains and damsels.

8. Look back at the goals that you set at the start of the Unit. Have you reached them, started to reach some or totally smashed all of them!? What other goals could you set yourself?

My Goals

I accomplished working with people in the class who I don’t know. I think that drama is a very good subject to meet and work with new kids in the class. I also think that during our group project I wasn’t very bossy compared to how I usually am in a group work but I can still be more open-minded. I am still not ready to be in a play because I am not confident enough because I was really nervous performing in front of the class, I can’t imagine performing in front of a couple hundred people.

9. Closing Comments: Conclude with a short paragraph discussing if you enjoyed the Unit and any suggestions about how we could make it more effective next time.

I think the unit was well constructed because not only did we learn all mellow drama but part of the unit we learned stage basics, blocking and expression. The only way the unit could be more effective if we saw a real example of mellow drama
