Habits – TAP discussions

by 090178 on April 29, 2013

Today in TAP (teacher advisory programme) class, we discussed habits based on a book we read named the Habits of Highly Defective Teens by Sean Covey. And after reading it I find myself being able to relate to a lot of things, in both good and bad ways. I find myself falling into one positive habit especially, which is the “Being Proactive” habit. I know that because I’m constantly taking initiative and responsibility of my own life, and by taking actions which have good impacts on the future. A couple years before now though, I must admit that being proactive was probably the habit I did the least. I was never aware of what I was doing and what consequences follow what I do, but over the years I have realized how to become a better person, resulting me in improving my life.

Science – Bird Reflection

by 090178 on January 27, 2013

This is a picture of a bird that I have created for science. I did that by saying how it would adapt to it’s environment structurally and behaviourally. My strength was clearly presenting my bird with a drawing, which had it’s environment around it. Al
ong with that, on my actual report, I pointed out what the purposes were of the structural adaptations on the picture of the bird. My weakness were elaborating even further on my explanations for the behavioural adaptions. I think my work outside of class was sufficient because I evenly distributed the amount of work I did at home and at school, therefore I used my time well and got the most out of it. If I were to start over, I would do more than what the rubric expected for example, talking about the birds calling noises, where the bird would migrate to and which specific predators it has. Using the rubric, for Criterion C, I would assess myself being a 5 because I have followed the guidelines and met the expectations, but not exceeding them.

Math Unit 3 Reflection – Patterns in Algebra

by 090178 on January 25, 2013

We have just finished our patterns in algebra unit, and I’d like to reflect on how I did.

I liked the input and output table’s the most in this unit because I find it to be the easiest way to figure out patterns. I also think that’s my strong point, because that’s the only area in the unit where I can be consistently be good at. I think I liked the story problems the least because it requires critical thinking and a deep understanding of all kinds of patterns. Although my patterns with fractions require some work,  I think I learned really well on the patterns in general. Some questions I still have are how to understand the world problems better and how to pick up on them faster. I think that the study of Patterns is important, it’s going to help me in life by when I go to club meetings or activities. Because the meetings might be every other Wednesday, therefore I would have to figure out the pattern of which Wednesday I would have to go to.

Math AOI

by 090178 on December 6, 2012

In Mathematics, we are studying algebraic patterns. I am looking at Human Ingenuity as the Area of Interaction because it takes critical thinking to be able to figure out and analyze patterns. Mathematical innovations are designed to make you think. And including algebra with in the patterns, it requires people with creative minds, therefore they can find out the rule easily, because they think outside of the box. This can be used in real life, even with the simplest problems. For example, traffic lights, if you counted how many seconds it took until it went red again, that is finding out a pattern. Another example is your daily routine! Where are the patterns in that? Do you wake up at 6:00 every morning, then leave the house by 6:30? That’s a pattern.

Science Discussions – Artificial Beach

by 090178 on November 22, 2012

Today in science we discussed a topic about a project by the government in Hong Kong, to create an artificial beach. An artificial beach meaning it’s man made, and not natural. Looking through the lens of Human Ingenuity, creating a man made beach, allows the government to be able to gain more money from tourists and such. As well as developers, because they will be able to build more homes for more convenience for those who live nearby.

UPDATE: May 7 – 10

by 090178 on May 10, 2012

Hello hungry bloggers! I know it’s a Thursday but tomorrow will be so packed I wouldn’t have time to give you an update. This week has been so busy! As you all know we have started the exhibition (if not, check my last post), and my group’s topic is “Art History”. Since that is a very broad topic, we narrowed it down to entertainment, then visual media. We have created our purpose, concepts and lines of inquiry, now we are refining our research questions. Sadly, a group member was sick for the past 2 days, so it was just me and another member, working our socks off, and yes I said socks.

UPDATE: April 23 – 27

by 090178 on April 27, 2012

The Exhibition has officially started! To learn a little about the exhibition click here

The Grade 6 students came together today to focus their attentions on our upcoming PYP Exhibition.

Our central idea for the exhibition is:

“The past has shaped what our world is like today.”

We had our first exhibition talk on Wednesday, we talked about topic/focus possibilities and had (not exhibition groups) group discussions to talk about whether a certain topic/focus would be appropriate for our exhibition.  We found out our exhibition groups yesterday, I’m in a group of three and my topic/focus is art history, which was my top pick, so I’m very pleased with everything. Today we had another talk with the entire grade about “Manners Matter”, because since we’re going to be working in a group for the exhibition we have to respect each other.

Stay tuned for more cookielicious exhibition news!

Student Led Learning Reviews

by 090178 on April 18, 2012

Today I had my student led learning learning review. It’s where I lead my parents around the classroom while explaining my learning process. I also made activities for us to participate in.

Here are my parents’ comments:

Maya continues to be highly methodical and diligent in her approach to both learning in general, and the SLLR in particular. She is an independent thinker and is always curious to investigate further. It is clear that her critical thinking capabilities are developing apace and that she has become more sophisticated in terms of her application of a variety of intellectual concepts. Moreover, she still retains a good sense of humour about it all :-)

UPDATE: March 19 – 23

by 090178 on March 23, 2012

This week was CRAZY! On Tuesday, the entire CDNIS went to the aberdeen sports ground for the Alan Dick Memorial Walk. If you didn’t already know, Mr. Dick was our Lower School Principle and passed away in 2009, since he was such an amazing man, he was missed greatly. Ever since 2010, our school has held the Alan Dick Memorial Walk in remembrance of Mr. Dick, and also all funds donated go to our scholarships. Click here to see a video made by my teacher during the walk. This week has been a crazy one, but a short one, because we also had a half day on Monday. I was surprised by how much work class 6C got done in three and a half days, good job everyone!

UPDATE: March 12 – 16

by 090178 on March 16, 2012

Hello everyone,

This week was an exciting one, as usual. We unpacked our new central idea for the exhibition! Here it is, “The past has shaped what our world is like today.” To tune into the new unit, we watched a movie named “Rabbit Proof Fence”, which is based on a true story. It’s briefly about Australians who aren’t fond of mixed race children, especially with the natives. In their point of view, to solve that “problem”, they would kidnap all Australian Native children and bring them far away from their homes, to a camp. But three girls named Molly, Daisy and Gracie, managed to escape. But their journey home was a tough one.

Anyway, on to the next activity, the whole grade is making a mural for each of our houses! Which include, Haida (Orca), Algonquin (bear), Mic Mac (Mountain Lion) and Cree (Eagle), I am in the house Haida. And grade 6 is putting a mural together for each house, so basically everyone gets a piece from the mural, and then draws something that represents you. Until next time, I’ll show you my mural piece!

Book club: Review of a character

by 090178 on March 14, 2012

Disclaimer: If you would not want a spoiler, please do not read this blog post.

Hello everyone, for the past few weeks 6C has been having book clubs, all of us have been reading books related to our unit, “How the world works”. Today, I’m going to talk about a very special character in the book I’m reading, an elephant.

Title: Running Wild

Author: Michael Morpurgo

Character Reviewing: Oona

As nine year old Will drifted across the sandy beach, the elephant he was riding, named Oona, was unsure about the ocean and was acting rather odd. With Oona’s sixth sense, she ran into the jungle bringing Will along with her, a tsunami had struck. Days, Months had past, Will and Oona had learned to survive in the jungle by living on fruits, clean water and shelter. But of course, animals don’t have the ability to communicate verbally with humans. But Oona is different, she also is not able to speak, but she can understand the needs of Will. When Will was hungry, he would tap Oona and use actions to describe his needs, Oona could understand and brought him to the appropriate food and appropriate water, she would also provide safety for Will which also makes her a caring elephant.

UPDATE: Feb 27 – March 2

by 090178 on March 2, 2012

Good morning/afternoon/evening bloggers from all over the world! This week has been an exciting one, class 6C has been working their cookie crumbles off! For two weeks, we have been working on an animation that is a part of our summative assessment. Everyone got split into groups of 4 and one group 5. My group included cookie 10, cookie 15, cookie 21 and cookie 2 . Each group had to choose a landform to investigate on, our group chose peninsulas and islands. We worked on the animation for 1 and a half weeks! Then we for the other half of the week, we did a voiceover to fit our animation. It was quite a stressful two weeks, but everyone is glad it’s over now. Today, the entire grade 6 sat in the library pit and we all watched each others videos, it was quite embarrassing listening to my old voice, but it was quite interesting to watch everyone else’s videos. Hope to see you next week!

It’s been a while…

by 090178 on February 13, 2012

Hello everyone! Sorry I haven’t been updating my blog posts lately, oh well…

Our current unit is called “How the World Works”, just to give you a brief understanding on what this unit is about, here is out transdisciplinary theme “An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how human use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.”. To gain a deeper understanding of this unit, everyone in 6C were put into groups of 3 and 4, then made a trailer of a keyword from the unit. I did the phrase “Scientific Technology” with Cookie 10. Here it is!

The second one is that I try to keep up with more blog post so I can communicate with you readers! The third one is that I use my time wisely at home and be more balanced on the activities I decide to do. Last but not least, I will try hard in my after school activities, but not get frustrated when I am not able to do something. I really hope I can go with these resolutions, I would also really like to hear all of your resolutions! I’m wishing you all a late MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HANUKKAH and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

PS: wish me luck on my first week back at school!

Book Club Review

by 090178 on December 13, 2011

Good morning cookalicious readers! Today I’m going to be talking about an activity that 6C has been doing for 3 weeks… book club! It’s where a group of four or five people read the same book and chapter(s) for a period of time. Then the next day, they would all sit together in a circle and discuss what had happened in the chapter(s). My book was called Tuck Everlasting, written by Natalie Babbitt. Click Here to buy the book! But first! Read my review to see if you would have any interest in Tuck Everlasting.

If you are the type of person that likes fantasy books that also has a bit of normal human lifestyle in it. Then this is definitely the book for you! This books is full of many different perspectives, characters and happenings. I really enjoyed reading this book because the story is so interesting which makes it impossible for me to put the book down. Highly recommended for those readers who would like to try something new.

Book Club Summary

by 090178 on December 12, 2011

Book title: Tuck Everlasting

Author: Natali Babbit

Winnie is a sweet little girl who will do anything to help her friends, the Tuck family. But this isn’t just any old story about friendship and love. At home, Winnie lives a boring and frustrating life with nothing to do. Until one morning, she gets fed up with her family and decides to run away into the woods that surrounds her house. She finds a boy sitting by a tree in the woods, which appeals rather odd. While Winnie stares at him, she realizes he is drinking water from the tree. There is a big secret behind this odd action which could change Winnie’s whole life. She has know idea about what she is about to hear. When heard at first, the secret is unbelievable, but sooner or later she can adapt to it. There are many dangers of learning about the secret, people could over hear about it, people would follow them and it could also mean Winnie staying away from home for a while. If you want to learn more about this book, I highly recommend you to buy it and read it.

UPDATE: Dec 5 – 9

by 090178 on December 9, 2011

I finally finished my summative task! Something very unfortunate happened to my computer this week so I had to do my summative task all over again! But it is Friday today and I finally finished it! Something challenging I found while doing the summative assessment was that not only did I have to make a report, but also two floorplans. The purpose of this summative task was to show my understanding of the central idea, “The organization and operation of marketplaces is determined by the communities in which they are located.”

Here is my report!

Introduction

The purpose of this report is to show understanding of the central idea, “The organization and operation of marketplaces is determined by the communities in which they are located.”. Pacific Place Mall and Graham Street Market will be used as the two different types of marketplaces in this report. The information used in this report was collected in Pacific Place and Graham Street Market during Grade 6 field trips, data was collected by observing and interviewing shop assistants and customers.

About Pacific Place

Pacific Place is an international four level shopping mall in Hong Kong Admiralty. It has over one hundred and thirty stores and boutiques.

The mall has stores that provide the needs for the community within it, such as entertainment, dining, clothing, accessories, furniture and more.

It houses two huge department stores including Harvey Nichols and Lane Crawford.

Pacific Place Organization

Pacific Place Mall is organized into four floors, each floor has stores which go all around as a ring (as shown above). The first two floors are more family friendly and casual stores. For example, Zara, Hong Kong Records, L’Occitane, Wise Kids etc. The third floor has mostly high-end fashion stores such as Marc by Marc Jacobs, Vivienne Tam, Joyce, Hugo Boss and more. Last but not least, the fourth floor has the luxurious expensive brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior, Gucci, Tiffany & Co. and others.

Pacific Place Operation

The mall is extremely convenient for anyone who comes. It has close transportation such as the Admiralty MTR Station and the Peak Tram Station. For people who drive with private cars, there is a Pacific Place car park which leads straight to the shopping mall. The mall is known for owning three five star hotels, The Shangri La Island Hotel, The JW Marriot Hotel and The Conrad. The hotels are very handy for business trips, holidays or just dining.

Pacific Place Community

Depending on what day and time it is, the people who go to Pacific Place are either business men or women grabbing a lunch, or a higher-end family going for a shopping spree. When new seasons or festivals are near, decorations are put up around the mall, which attracts customers to come and shop with a seasons spirit (above). The mall has helped out in a huge event for good cause, WWF for Earth Hour.  At Pacific Place, they have different things to help with everyday lives such as a diaper changing room, a place to charge your mobile, lending an umbrella and a three hour free parking offer.

About Graham Street Market

The one hundred and sixty year old Graham Street Market is a local market with stalls that sell fresh food like seafood, fruits, vegetables, meat, flowers and other dry goods. Located in Central, the marketplace is very popular and has reasonable prices for items that are being sold.

Graham Street Market Organization

The market itself starts from Queen’s Road Central and goes all the way to Hollywood Road. Graham Street Market is narrow but allows a row of stalls on either sides (as shown on the right). The stall owners organize their products the way they desire.

Graham Street Market Operation

Graham Street Market opens seven days a week but most stalls start closing at seven thirty. Because of the market’s location, it is very convenient. It is easy to get taxi’s or buses, there are also many stores and restaurants nearby since Central is a very popular area.

Graham Street Market Community

The people who go to Graham Street Market live nearby for convenience, there are also people who like to buy goods for reasonable prices. Stall owners say that customers give them feedback about their stall so that they can improve. The marketplace relies on it’s community to be able to operate by having customers buy their products.

Similarities

Pacific Place and Graham Street Market are similar in a few ways, obviously, they are both marketplaces. They are both located in a very convenient areas, Pacific Place is in Admiralty which is where there is a MTR station and another shopping mall (Queensway Plaza). While Graham Street Market is in Central, which is where there are many restaurants and stores around. Both marketplaces are open seven days a week so their customers can buy what they need anytime they want.

Differences

Both of these marketplaces are very different. For example, Pacific Place is more of a high end mall, while Graham Street Market is more of a local market with reasonable prices. Pacific Place contains stores with brand names, unlike Graham Street Market; where the stalls are owned by the people at them. Pacific Place has many different varieties of stores for example, electronics, clothing, toys etc. But Graham Street market mainly sells dry goods such as, seafood, meat, vegetables, flowers etc. Customers in Pacific Place are most likely able to afford most items sold there, while people who regularly go to Graham Street market won’t be.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this report showed the understanding of the central idea, “The organization and operation of marketplaces is determined by the communities in which they are located.”. The information used in this report was collected in Pacific Place and Graham Street Market during Grade 6 field trips, data was collected by observing and interviewing shop assistants and customers.

Pacific Place and Graham Street Market have many differences in the ways they are organized, operated and located, but there are also similarities to go with it. Both Pacific Place and Graham Street Market are highly recommended to go to. Pacific place is more of a high end mall for people who love to shop, while Graham Street is a more of a local market for those who like to buy fresh produce.

UPDATE: Nov 28 – Dec 2

by 090178 on December 2, 2011

This week, we started our new summative task. Our task is to create a model, report, movie, keynote or anything that can show our understanding of the central idea “The organization and operation of marketplaces is determined by the communities in which they are located.”. I have made a decision and I am going to make a digital floor plan of Pacific Place and Graham Street Market, I will also be making a report to go with it. The summative task is due next Friday so I better get cooking!

Unit: Marketplaces

Hello there cookie monsters,

Recently, class 6C has been told that we are allowed to choose what we would like to do for our summative assessment – the big project we do at the end of each unit to show what we have learnt. But we must choose one that can show our understandings and learnings the most. For example, I could make a model, a short film, a poster, a keynote or a report on marketplaces. So far, I believe I am going to be making a model. Click here to see what type of model I will be creating (obviously not the creations in the picture). I believe by creating model will show my understanding the most because I will specifically show differences and similarities between markets by modeling them, I will also show how different market places are organized and how it operates that way.

November 18th UPDATE

by 090178 on November 18, 2011

Hello bloggers! For these past few weeks, I have been SUPER busy! So sorry I haven’t been posting blog posts, class 6C has been going on many field trips to collect data to understand “The organization and operation of marketplaces is determined by the communities in which they are located“. That’s right, our new unit is about marketplaces! And guess what? Grade 6 is going to camp in Zhao Qing next weeks Tuesday! The reason why we are going to Zhao Qing is because we can collect data about marketplaces there and then compare the data to the Hong Kong marketplaces. But we are also going there to have fun! After I come back, I will write a blog post all about what I did in camp so y0u can read it. See you then!

My artwork!

by 090178 on October 21, 2011

Hello hungry bloggers!

Ready for a creation that you will crave for?

VOILA!

Title: Get the pointe?
Artist: Maya McKeever
Art Form: Sculpture

This sculpture of a pair of pointe shoes represents the artist herself. It uses the elements of design such as form, line, colour, shape, space and texture. For form, it is a sculpture which is 3D, which will have obvious line, for example the neutral coloured shoe is diagonally on top of the leopard shoe. The colour of both shoes are painted differently and all colours used were mixed with others. The pointe shoe’s shape is rather square at the tip, but at the heel it is rather oval. Both shoes are stuck together, which creates space. The artist used real ribbons of old pointe shoes to show differences in texture. It also uses the principles of design such as balance, movement and proportion. The shoes are shaped the same and have the same details, which shows balance. The ribbons were hardened into a spiral shape to create movement . The leopard coloured shoe has proportion because it is smaller than the neutral coloured shoe, since one foot is bigger than the other. The artist wanted to show the audience her personality through just a pair of pointe shoes. They are rather brick shaped and hard to show strength and stability, but then the soft colours make it look relaxed and joyful, which is exactly how the artist feels.

Social Networking Tips

by 090178 on June 1, 2011

This morning the whole of grade 5 and 6 had a talk about social networking. The teachers gave us some tips about how to be safe and smart online. The most important tip I learnt today is “If you wouldn’t do it in person, don’t do it online.”. I found that veery true to me because online I thought I was safe and I could act different and cool, but now I realize it isn’t the right thing to do and I regret doing anything like that. But on the internet, there is no way to delete a comment, post, message forever.

Here is a video for you to learn and smarten up about social networking:

Grade 9 Simulations

by 090178 on May 26, 2011

Yesterday the whole of grade 5 5A 5B 5C 5D 5E was invited  to the grade 9 simulations project. A simulation is something you act out something that you are not. We had to their activities they set up, it was for their civics mark! We did activities like “Trust” for Cyber bullying, “Blind” for blind people and “Video Games” for video game addiction. The activities were really fun, but we also learnt something from it. The first activity we did was the “Blind” activity, they blind folded us and we had to walk around their class room by using our 5 senses. The second activity was the “Video Games” activity, they let us play electronics for a while then they suddenly told us to stop. Then they showed us a video about crazy video gamers with their addiction. The last activity we did was “Trust” for cyber bullying, one student got blindfolded and had to step over some sharp pins with the help of the other students. But what the blindfolded student didn’t know is that we took away the pins. When the student took the blind fold off he laughed. I think the grade 9 students did well on setting up the activities and guiding us around.

Class Music Video

by 090178 on May 18, 2011

Dear readers,

My class and I have made a music video for our grade 5/6 assembly. We finished it in two days! I edited, choreographed, filmed and directed it, so that’s why I’m not in it. We chose the song “DJ Got Us Falling In Love by Usher ft. Pitbull” because it has the word “DJ” in it and our class is called the “5D DISCO”, so we are the “5D DJ’s”. Hope you like it!

Student Led Learning Review Reflection

by 090178 on May 3, 2011

Most of you probably don’t know what a Student Led Learning Review is – A.K.A. SLLR -. It actually means what it says, it is a student LED learning review. Basically the student leads the parent around the classroom and tells them what work and projects they have been doing. Then the parent ask difficult questions for you to answer and explain. My SLLR was on Friday, and it was much harder than everyone else’s because I got recorded on video! Miss. Fung recorded me, so that was kind of challenging. The best part of the SLLR was being asked to be recorded! The worst part of the SLLR was BEING recorded. :P

If you still do not understand what a SLLR is, watch the video below! :)

National Treasure

by 090178 on March 30, 2011

This week, class 5D has been watching a Walt Disney Film called “National Treasure“. It is about a man named Benjamin Gates who comes from a family of treasures hunters. Ben’s grandfather believes that the forefathers’ buried treasure somewhere in the country, but there are clues hidden all around/in the most unimaginable and dangerous areas. Ben goes with some associates – Riley, Shaw and Ian – to find a clue which tells them there is an invisible clue behind the Declaration of Independence. Shaw and Ian disagree, so they set off to find the treasure themselves, so Ian and Benjamin become arch enemies. Ian turns bad and wants to steal the Declaration of Independence and the treasure for greed, but Ben wants to steal them to protect them from Ian.

Confusing right? If you haven’t watched the film before, well you should! It’s appropriate for all ages and is the type of movie that makes you sit on the edge of your seat. We have only watched about half of it, so I don’t know too much about the whole thing.

(DISCLAIMER *If you don’t want a movie spoiler, I would suggest that you do not read below)

The 5 major things that has happened so far in the film:

1. Ian turns bad

2. A girl named Dr. Abigail Chase joins Ben and Riley

3. Ben steals the Declaration of Independence

4. Ben finds the secret clue

5. Ian manages to steal the Declaration of Independence from Ben

Most of you may know what “The World War” and the “World War 2″ are. But haven’t we ever wondered HOW we know about the past, it doesn’t just pop into someone’s mind.

You can learn abut the past by:

- Reading tomb stones

- Asking the elderly/professional scientist

- Reading books/magazines about history

- Searching online

- Watching documentaries

There are actually many many more ways, but the examples above are the simplest and most convenient ways of learning about the past. I hope these examples help you learn more ways to find out about history!

Artifacts: Take a Guess!

by 090178 on March 15, 2011

For the past few weeks the 5D DISCO have been doing some artifact games. What you do is, the teacher shows the class a picture of an artifact, then everyone has to guess what it is using who, what, where and when. Try to make an educated guess, not just a random silly guess like a hippopotamus’s leg. You have to interpret this photo. “Interpret” means really try to explain something. So now it’s YOUR turn to play. Here is my artifact. Guess what it is, type your answers in the comments below. Have fun!

Ideas:

Swords?

Knives?

Fishing hooks?

Stakes?

BE CREATIVE!

by 090178 on March 8, 2011

Every Friday, my class 5D will have a Class Community Circle – Also known as C.C.C . We would all sit down in a circle and pass around an object, such as a rubber dog toy ball. The three rules of C.C.C. are: 1. Only the person with the object can speak 2. No fiddling with things 3. No saying negative things about others

When you get the object, you are suppose to say one thing about the week or one thing about a future coming event. It is really fun, and when we finish early, we can all play a game! :)

Sharing The Planet: My PSA

by 090178 on March 7, 2011

YouTube Preview ImageOur New Unit of Inquiry is about child rights and about child labor. Our summative task is to make a PSA. For those who don’t know what a PSA is, it stands for Public Service Announcement. A PSA is kind of like a commercial but they are not advertising or persuading you to buy products, in a PSA you are trying to persuade people to help the world or help you like no smoking or child labor. So I made this one about child labor and kidnapping. I hope you enjoy my PSA.

Hong Kong Cemetery

by 090178 on March 2, 2011

Today, the whole of grade five went to the Hong Kong Cemetery to find out about Hong Kong’s history. I think we went there because our new Unit of Inquiry is  ”Where We Are in Place and Time”. The unit is about which sources people use to inquire into the past. So we went there to answer a question the teachers asked us “What can you explain about Hong Kong’s past?”, and we had to figure out what the answer was.

When we got to the cemetery, everyone split into small groups. We started to look at graves to see how people passed away, after that we would know what happened then such as people dying in the world war. Also they are not just ordinary people, some are medical corps, military people, people from the royal navy, officers or even normal villagers. I looked at a lot of head stones and realized that most of the people were English and were fighting for Hong Kong. That piece of information explains that there were some English people in Hong Kong before Britain took over it. Not only people in war passed away, but also in plane crashes or diseases. I saw this one head stone that was a girl who was born on the twenty ninth, then gone on the thirty first. It was quite sad knowing how a lot of people’s loved ones passed on. There was a grave that was from eighteen eleven, so that means the cemetery has been there for years. Another interesting thing is that no one can ever be buried at the cemetery again, because it’s full.

I learnt a lot today and in a way thought it was quite fun and interesting. I hope I can learn more about Hong Kong’s past during the Unit!

Iqbal

by 090178 on February 8, 2011

Iqbal, Iqbal, Iqbal. What a great child HERO. What do you think of Iqbal? I think he is brave, strong and smart. For those of you who don’t know who Iqbal is, he is a Pakistanis boy that stood up to his master and to the other children to stop child labor in a carpet making factory and other child labor. The story of Iqbal is true, but it was fictionalized into a book that my class and I are reading together for the past few weeks.

Iqbal makes me feel he is like a rubber band, he is strong so he won’t snap easily, he escapes from the factory and springs right back AND he stretches up and stands up tall and strong against his master. I think we read this novel because our coming up Unit of Inquiry is about children’s rights and opportunities. So after reading the book we would know about child labor and other negative and terrible things that happen to children everywhere. The most important things I have learnt from the book is that you can’t be controlled in your life and that you have to stand up to the enemy, so if you fail you have to keep trying. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/264447.Iqbal

Author Visit

by 090178 on January 20, 2011

This morning, we had an author visit from two great AUTHORS Sara Holbrook and Michael Salinger. They are two very talented authors with a great sense of humour. Today they talked about how anyone can be a poet and that writing poems can help you in a lot of things such as writing, reading, engineering etc. They also introduced us to new types of poems like verb poems and definition poems. I learnt a lot today, it was a lot of fun.

Our Winter Concert

by 090178 on January 12, 2011

Every winter, each grade in CDNIS has a winter concert and grade 5 doing theirs tonight! The purpose of having a winter concert is to show our parents what we have been learning for the past term. Our Unit of Inquiry is about waste management, so we have to make small skits, dances, raps or song by ourselves. My group (DJ 10, DJ 16, DJ 25) are doing a dance, and we have been practicing for a long time, and it’s our choreography. Tonight is our performance and I am really nervous! Wish me luck!

My Winter Break

by 090178 on January 4, 2011

This winter break my family and I stayed in Hong Kong because of the chaos in Europe with the snow storms. But that meant my family and I didn’t have any stress about our luggage getting lost and us getting stuck in the airport for a week or two. Our break was two weeks long, our last day of school was on Friday, December 17th 2010, we got to get off school at 11:00 a.m! My friend (DJ 10), came with on my bus and we went to see the film “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1” together.

The first week of my break was kind of a relaxed “do what ever you want” kind of week. But when it came to Wednesday, December 24th 2010, we all went out to Nadaman in the Hong Kong Shangri La Hotel to have Tapanyaki for our Christmas eve dinner. Tapanyaki is when a chef cooks Japanese food in front of you, and then serves it to you. I had some asparagus soup, scallops, medium rare beef, spinach, fried rice and miso soup. I felt really full after that. We actually couldn’t get a reservation until 8 p.m., so that’s why we got home at 10 p.m..

The next day was Christmas day, my brother and I were so excited that we woke up at 4 a.m.! My mum didn’t let us wake her up until 7:30 a.m., so we watched a movie to pass the time. Once it was time we went to the tree and starting ripping open our presents. I got the newest generation Ipod Touch, my brother got a Blue DSI XL and a Pleo, my older sister got an electric guitar, my dad got an Ipad from mum and mum got bracelets from dad. After the present opening, we had a big Christmas day lunch!

On the 31st of December, my family, friends and I stayed up until 12:00 a.m. to count down to 2011! It was really fun. I would also like to wish you a late Christmas and a happy new year!

My Book Report

by 090178 on December 16, 2010

For the past 2 weeks at school, class 5D had a task to finish a book with a minimum of 100 pages in 2 weeks. I finished my book in a week. Here are my book details:

Title: Madame Doubtfire

Author: Anne Fine

Pages: 181

About the book: Lydia, Christopher and Natalie Hilliard are used to listening to terribly frightening arguments and have been torn between their warring parents ever since the divorce. But all that chaos changes when their mother hires a most unusual and strange cleaning lady. At first the children want Madame Doubtfire to leave, but after they got used to her and realized how strange and weird she is, they start to like her.

This book can make you laugh and cry and is great for people who have good imagination and humor. “Madame Doubtfire” was inspired by the highly successful film “Mrs Doubtfire”.

Photo of the Day

by 090178 on November 30, 2010

Title: Amazon‘s (the online store) Christmas

This photo is about Amazon (the online store) getting ready to ship, plane or drive items all around the world, bringing everyone Christmas presents. In this photo there are cardboard boxes everywhere stacked up on top of one another. When I look at this photo it makes me feel that if I were one of the workers I will get ready for the busiest Christmas of their life, and apparently it will be.dip29_01_jpg_1035481cl-8

What Does Perspective Mean?

by 090178 on November 25, 2010

I think perspective means different peoples point of view, or different peoples opinions on something. Here’s an example, like if someone gets pushed, they tell the teacher but the person who pushed told the teacher that he didn’t. So everyone has a different story about something. The book “The Three Little Pigs”, have a lot of different versions, some of them is from the third person perspective, some are from the wolf’s perspective and some are even from the pigs perspective. Perspective can be very interesting but it usually gets people into fights, kind of like debating. You think your story is true and yours is the best, but you have to fight for it. That’s all I know so far, I hope I will learn more after learning more about it at school.

Reflection- Waste Management WebQuest

by 090178 on November 16, 2010

In our new Unit of Inquiry we are doing a WebQuest on waste management, this is my reflection on how it’s going so far. My group and I first started off not taking it as seriously and just messing around a bit, but now the time is getting short so we have to work much harder and quicker. Our task is to make a booklet about “Waste Management”, and our title is called “The Big Book of Rubbish“, it sounds like it is a rubbish book but you know what I mean.

So far we have been working very cooperatively and hardly, we also have just finished our planning sheet which we had to do some research on. We also are starting on our front cover of our project booklet. So far, so good.

Last week we finished our Unit of Inquiry- “How the world works”, so now we have a new Unit of Inquiry- “How we organize ourselves”.  We are also doing a WebQuest online about landfills, waster management it’s basically everything about garbage. Our central idea is “Decisions made about solid waste management affect societies and the environment.” The teacher questions are “What is your trash attitude?” “Where is “away”- throwing it away?” “What is Hong Kong’s trash attitude?”. I think it’s going ot be a very interesting unit. I can’t wait to learn more!

Cyber Safety Talk Reflection

by 090178 on November 10, 2010

On Tuesday, Nov 10th and Wednesday, Nov 11th all of the grade fives had a talk with a cyber safety EXPERT. She talked about how to be safe on all sorts of communication technologies, especially online websites. After the presentations I feel like I have to be really careful and responsible with my cyber safety. We talked about all sorts of cyber safety rules (for example online privacy, cyber bullying, cellphone safety etc.). I still wonder that if your name is on the internet like Google, could you ever take it down? I have actually figured out how to turn off the search engine for my Facebook account because I have a rare name so if I type it down, there won’t be many others besides me. I will remember to be safe online especially about my identity or too much detail. I have already taken action by deleting some of my online accounts that I don’t use any more. Remember everyone, be safe online!

Art JamaLama

by 090178 on November 9, 2010

Last Monday my class went on an outing to a place called Art JamaLama. The whole of Grade. 5 has already been to Art JamaLama except for our class, we were the last class to go. The grade 5′s task at Art JamaLama was to make a portrait of yourself that describes or looks like you.

We all went to school normally like any other day, we went to class and had class until 9:00, that’s when we got ready to get on the bus. My mum came to help out at the outing, so my mum, my friend (DJ10), and I all sat together on the bus to Art JamaLama. Once we got there, we had to take off our shoes and socks because if we spilled paint on them it will stain badly. When we went inside the Art Jamming room, had to stand where there was a blank canvas, me and my friend (DJ10) stood next to each other. In front of us was a whole table of paints, there were so many colours! Even Pop Pink!

There was a lady who told us what to do and gave us some tips, she told us how to get the paint by putting us much as you want in a plastic container and bringing it back to your canvas carefully. First we had to paint our background colour, there were so many COLOURS! It was really hard to choose the colours. Since a lot of people used light blue and light green, I mixed some light and dark blue together. We had to use little sponges to colour the background. Next, we had to use some sort of spatula to make a sketch on top of the background. I used peach for my skin, neon green for my eyes, hot pink for my hair and red for my shirt. Crazy COLOURS right? When we were done we ate lunch and got on the bus to go back to school.

My October Break

by 090178 on October 25, 2010

DSC_0405This October break I went to Sydney, Australia with my family – my brother, my sister, my mum and dad. When I arrived in Sydney we went to stay at my sister’s godmother’s house. Once we settled down we just rested from the 9 hour flight. By the way I don’t really remember all the dates of what I did, so it might be a bit mixed up.

The next day we went to a boat event called “Island Hopping”. “Island Hopping” is where you get on a boat and go to different types of islands to explore and play games. First Goat Island, then Shark Island, and finally Clark Island. Click here for the website of “Island Hopping”. It was really fun. I liked Shark Island the most because there were a lot of animals to touch and hold. I held a python, which then i put it on my neck. I also touched an owl, and I saw and screamed at the famous giant cockroach (shiver). We also ate lunch at Shark Island. We ate falafel rolls which were yummy. After all the islands were explored we went back home.

After the “Island Hopping” my family and I were all quite tired, but we still had to wake up at 9:00 A.M (that is early for me on a holiday) because we were going to Taronga Zoo. When we got to the zoo we went on the cable cars to get to the main entrance. We saw peacocks, koalas, different reptiles, all the animal characters from the movie “Madagascar” that my brother was excited about and much much more!

We also went to the Sydney Powerhouse Museum. We learnt a lot of new things about space (and from my brother who LOVES space). There was also a place in the museum which was called the “80′s Zone”. It’s where everything comes back to life in the 80′s, like a whole wall of the 80′s famous music album covers, a PacMan machine, different plastic models of the famous people then.

On the last day we spent the morning on Bondi beach where we saw people surfing, suntanning and swimming. We sat down to play on the beach for an hour, I just played with the sand since we didn’t bring our swimsuits. The beach was extremely clean compared to what I would usually see in Hong Kong. After wandering around the beach, we ate lunch at and Italian restaurant. My sister and my brother and I all ate spaghetti, while my mum ate some kind of crab spaghetti.

And the rest of the days it’s either I don’s remember or it’s just shopping.

Waisting One Drop Can’t Harm Anything?

by 090178 on October 15, 2010

As some of you know it is Blog Action Day today, and if you didn’t here is the link to their website: http://blogactionday.change.org/

Last year, Blog Action Day was about climate change, but this year it is about people surviving from unsafe water. Every week approximately 42000 people die from unsafe water.

When ever you drink water, do you ever think about how lucky you are, and obviously any normal person even me would just drink it and get on with the day. But what I’m trying to say is that you should always be grateful you have clean water to drink everyday, and not that many people are as lucky as you.

Every single drop you waste, leads to death.

What I already know about the New Unit of Inquiry:

I know that solid, liquid and gas are all states, and that there are two more discoveries, they are plasma and base Einstein, but I’ve had only heard of them, so I would like to know what they are. Matter is everything, and everything is matter. Matter can never be created or destroyed, it can only be changed. There are different types of materials such as, fabric, bricks, cement/concrete, wood, paper, rubber etc. I know quite a bit already, but now i want to learn more about what I don’t know.

I don’t know how matter can actually be changed, and provide different benefits. I also don’t know many vocabulary word examples of matter. How do we use the scientific principles of chemistry? Are matter and materials the same?

I feel quite comfortable and confident with our new Unit of Inquiry. But I still want to understand better about what I know, and learn well and understand what I don’t know.
