Being Bindy

A review by Cookie 24

Being Bindy had me thinking what being Bindy was like because I couldn’t seem to figure it out at all. First of all I was shocked when I saw on the library website “an Australian teenager” because it never even told us it was in Australia. Neither did I find out what Bindy looks like or any of her friends and there was just too much going on. Bindy seems selfish and only caring about her relationship between her ex best friend Janey and her and cuts herself off from the rest of the world only letting in a few friends who are persistent and much more interesting then Bindy herself.

If you’re not used to strong teenage topics then avoid this book because it discusses relationships on a level not a lot of primary school kids understand.

The actual story is about Bindy, a teen girl whose best friend has dumped her for popularity and completely ignores her. Then things get complicated as her Bindy’s parents who are divorced start fighting over who should take care of her. Then to add another element and more things to remember Janeys mum starts dating Bindy’s father. Bindy then goes through high school with utterly strange forms of humiliation and complicated relationships with James, a strange boy who insists on accompanying her and a pushy and persistent yet interesting friend Cara who I feel we don’t get to know enough of her.

Though there are funny or strange parts in the book that make you giggle or laugh as their relationships develop and bonds and broken and retied again.

Being Bindy left me feeling empty as it left on an abrupt note but a good sign is that it left me wanting more. If there was a sequel I would probably read it but only because I want to know what happens next.
