Many of us read the newspaper on a daily basis. That or we watch BBC or CNBC or other news shows. On the news, you’ll quite often find quite serious stories. Instead of writing about kittens who found a ball of yarn or candles that burnt our, they talk about the Arab uprising or the austerity measures in Greece. For our challenge this week in the better blogging battle, we have to face one of these conflicts and show the readers how WE can make a difference.
Today, I want to talk about a fairly undermined topic. It is not usually featured on the news and some people may say it is rather unimportant. I think now! My topic for todays speech/essay/rant is Animal Abandonment. Everyday millions of animals (not just domestic house-pets) lose a home or a family. This is because of bad owners, deforestation or pollution. Even in Hong Kong there are thousands of abandoned dogs or cats stuck in SPCA homes or kennels. Charities and kennels that look after lost dogs and other animals can’t keep them forever though. If a detained animal doesn’t get adopted within a reasonable amount of time then they get euthanised. This means they receive an injection which puts them permanently to sleep. Many people have heard this term commonly as being “put down.”
With other creatures around the world though, their homes are being polluted or chopped down. Species of monkeys in africa are losing their habitats at a rapid rate as trees are cut down for wood and paper. Pollution can also seep into the deepest of seas or the densest of jungles. You may be thinking this isn’t counted as “abandonment” but it is. We’re letting down these animals, leaving them for death or extinction. We know we can help them but most of us won’t do much more then talk about this issue. When we leave animals alone in an unnatural land for them, we have abandoned them. We can stop this though.
There are countless charities trying to prevent not only loss of habitat but help spur on adoption. Donate to these charities and you could be saving lives. Also as far as owners leaving pets out in the street, when your family wants to get a pet, go look at a shelter instead of a breeder. It’s most likely if puppies are born into the hands of a capable breeder they will be safer then those stuck in a shelter. If you adopt a cat, dog or any other animal from a shelter, you’re giving them a home and another chance. You can’t really adopt animals such as orangutang s or dolphins but you can actually sponsor them. This means, each month you donate money to help save this animal’s habitat and keep it healthy. There are different organisations around the world that can get you sponsoring tigers or turtles, anything animal in danger.
This world isn’t just meant for us. We’re here to share it with others. It’s just as much as their planet as ours. We as a species are constantly polluting habitats and leaving animals alone. We can change all of this and make it fair for every animal on this planet if we only try. It’s not only our responsibility but our duty to ensure a safe life for the billions populating our globe!
Don’t just talk about this issue. Take action! Stand up, take action, raise money! We all have a voice :D
