Unexpected things can happen at unexpected times. Some are good and some can be bad. Some can make you sob, some can make you shriek of joy. But right here, right now it isn’t much of a good thing for me.

Oh… I can’t believe its already time. I’ve been here since Grade 3 and now its my time to leave. Friday will be my last day in CDNIS. The packing and boxes and everything. NO! I don’t want to leave! I’ll miss everyone so much. I’ve learned so much, I’ve meet so many people, I’ve been influenced by people, people have touched my heart, people have made me cry but all through this experience, I’ve learned so many life lessons, of course academic ones too. It sucks for me again because I never get to graduate. In Korea, I left when I was at the end of my year of Kindergarten and now I have to leave Hong Kong 6 months before PYP/Grade 6 graduation. I mean I have graduated Kindergarten in Hong Kong but I didn’t even start the semester from the beginning. But especially in CDNIS I learned new things and found new feelings I’ve never felt before influenced from people. I got new experiences I never would have if I wasn’t here. Getting to go to a new place and live there and make it “my home” is just a really good chance to explore new stuff. And from being in Hong Kong and CDNIS just made me realize who I am and who I want to be.

Okay, pause here. I’ve always thought I got a bit cheesy everytime I tried to express my feelings. But anyways, I just really enjoyed being in CDNIS and this has been such an incredible chance for me to get to know new things. I promise I will never forget these 3 and a half years in CDNIS. Sigh… I’ll miss everyone so much! <3

We had 3 math tests related to fractions, decimals and percentages. The junior choir, which I am a part of has done some performances too. I think I was balanced, thinker and risk-taker this week. I was balanced because I evenly used my time to do different things. I also had be to a thinker when I did those activities, especially the summative assessment so I could get it done well and in time. I was also a risk-taker because I did some things differently than normal or uniquely so I could experience new things. Overall, It was a busy week but I’m very happy about it.

This is was also a very active week. This Monday was our first day back in school after camp. I was really glad to be back at school with the CDNIS community. We started off a lot of things today, for example, our summative task, data handling, literacy circle and report writing. Our summative task is very interesting for this unit. We have to choose 2 markets from 2 different communities and write a report, a brochure or make something out of it to show the similarities and differences. We also started learning more deeply into data handling and graphs. Every group had to choose a graph and make a poster with an example and definition. Our group had to investivate the Pictograph. It was pretty easy to make an example because I have learned about pictographs before. I think our group did pretty well. Another thing we did during class was literacy circles. Every group had to read a book on a company and make a poster. Our group read a book on McDonald’s. It was pretty fun because how can McDonald’s not be a fun subject? Our group was consisted of Isabelle, Alex, Jonathan and me. I think we did pretty well on discussing the book but sometimes we got off topic and could not focus. We are on the track of making our poster and we will have to present it next Monday. We also have been focusing on report writing. I think that helped me a lot because one of my goals is to improve my writing. When writing this reflection we got to choose 2 of the attitudes of our choice. I chose principled and caring because I think this week I got to focus more on those subjects than before. I was principled and caring because when we did group work I tried to lead everyone so we can stay on task and not fool around. I treated everyone with care and fairly so no one would feel bad or left out. I also tried my best in every work I did. I think I acted on my best behavior this week. :p

From the 22 to 25 of November the whole grade 6 (except for some people) went on a trip to Zhao Qing, Guang Dong. It was a really fun experience from all the different trips I went on. I did go on the grade 5 China trip to Gui Zhou. For that trip about 25 people from the whole grade 5 got to go. They had to write an essay explaining why we should be chosen to go. Anyways, I’m getting off topic now. So on Tuesday morning we got together with our class, went to meet our groups, organize ourselves and hopped on to the bus to the Shen Zen border. The bus ride was super LONG but it as worth it because it was just an amazing journey. On the first day we stayed in the Dynasty Hotel. After we got all settled we got to know our group more and meet our group leader. We played some games and went to our first activity, Chinese Painting. For the Chinese painting had to paint a scenery of Zhao Qing with the instructor’s help. I was really proud of my work even though I made some mistakes. I was also was proud that I went to the group with no translator but did everything correct even though I’m not that good at Chinese. After Chinese painting we started observing the market place near the place we did Chinese painting. I got a lot of information and knowledge about the market in Zhao Qing. I was pretty much tired after that because of all of the traveling. We ate dinner when we got back to the hotel. Then, we went out again to interview customers and shopkeepers about the organization and operation of this marketplace. I got loads of different kinds of answers and I was pretty excited that I did get a lot of information. By the end of the day I was pretty much exhausted so I fell right asleep went we got back. Day 2 and 3 was pretty much the same. We did some ink pot carving activities and more of observations. On day 3 we did more of camp activities than investigating ones. Our group first made catapults then campfires and had some delicious banana boats with chocolate. After lunch we went canyon hiking and did some team building games. I had enjoyed everything so much! They were activities we possibly could not do during our daily lives it was a cool experience. My favorite part was at the end of day 3 when we had time for a campfire after a yummy barbecue dinner. Few group did small performances including our group, the Blueberry Smurf Army. I had so much fun even though we didn’t have much time to plan the whole thing. After that we played some small games, sang chants/songs and even prank a few people with a story that we never made. Everyone was laughing and having a good time. I was really glad that everyone did like it and I had a special feeling for it. I felt like everyone there had a connection with each other with a invisible string or maybe small special sparks or something like that. I just felt really good that I met all these wonderful people that will influence my life a lot. I also got to know people in my grade better than I did before. It was sure tiring but it was so worth it. This trip was nothing like I have been on before. It was only 4 days but left me with memories I will never forget.

P.S. La la la la la la, sing a happy song. La la la la la la, Smurf the whole day long!

This week was filled with events. Our class was very busy, and I mean very busy. This week we our class went on a field trip to the Aberdeen Market and the Aberdeen Market Square. We went there to interview shopkeepers and customers about the organization and operation of markets. My group was consisted with Nathan, Stephanie and me. We spent about 25 minutes for each place. We didn’t get all of the information we needed but we did have loads of fun. We also had to take pictures of the market to capture the essence. I took a lot of photos and I was pretty happy with them. Also we did a fun activity on Thursday. We made mural mosaic. We had to paint a zodiac animal of your choice. We were told that the tile paintings will be turned into a mural mosaic that is going to be 2 floors tall. Also, today our class and 5B was leading an assembly. Everyone took part in this assembly creating movies, keynotes or literal songs. It was really fun having this experience. Also, during lunch we had basketball intramural but our class lost in the semi-finals. It was pretty sad because we lost by 2 points.

But still, I think I was pretty open-minded this week because of the past experiences from How We Express Ourselves I wasn’t angry or sad when my tile painting didn’t turn out the way I wanted or something like that. Also, I understood when people didn’t answer our questions during the field trip. In conclusion, I really enjoyed the week full with different kinds of emotions.

This week we started the unit, How We Organize Ourselves. We did many interesting activities today. The grade 6 students set up markets as a pre-assessment for this unit. But the main point was to earn money for a charity called, World Vision. Every classes goal was $2,500. I think it really helped us actually experience markets. I really enjoyed selling things to other people can realized that it is a really hard business. Our group did a bake sale as you know from my last post I put up asking you about the kinds you like. Our group earned HK$583 dollars. I was pretty impressed with what our group earned because I never expected to make so much money. Also on Wednesday we had a special author named Jack Gantos. He did a small presentation for us about his life and writing. I was really interesting to listen because he added humor while he was talking. I found it a bit too dramatic sometimes when he was telling his own experiences.

For the things we did this week, we had to be tolerant. Being tolerant means to be open-minded about things even when you are not used to it or never experienced it before. Doing a bake sale was a whole new thing for me but I tried my best and we turned out pretty good. Overall, I had so much fun this week!

Phew! First of all, I want to say that I’ve had so much fun doing this unit. I’ve learned more about the different types of art and how we all use them for different purposes with different opinions. Secondly, it was a really… let’s say busy unit. With all the different types of activities from guest speakers to the summative assessment that had to be done in one week it was very rushed. I’ve noticed now I’m in grade 6 and I’m older I think more deeply about things. I really think this unit help me be more open-minded about art because I am not that good at art and I get stressed out when it doesn’t come out perfect or the way I want it to be. But now I’ve learned, any type of art that uses the principles and elements can be a piece of “art”. The question I want to focus in this post is one of the teacher questions for this unit. “Can everyone be an artist?” Well, at the beginning of the unit, I thought, “Well, depends on the situation.” And I’ve always thought that not everyone can be a perfect artist like Leonardo da Vinci or Vincent van Gogh. But now I realized, anyone can be an artist if you believe. Even though if it might not be perfect it still can be an artwork. I really think that this unit gives hope to students that aren’t good at art or dislikes art but still wants to be good at it. So every time you make a piece of artwork, be proud of yourself and most importantly have fun!

This week we mostly did our summative assessment. We have to get it finished by next Monday but so far I’m not sure if I can do everything I planned. We had some distractions but they were mostly fun for us. We had Mr. Duane Smith, the head designer for Reebok come in and do a presentation for the whole grade 6. He used to have a company with Ms. Sandul’s cousin so Ms. Sandul knew him very well. He also went to the same university as Ms. Sandul. We learned all lot about the process of making clothing and shoes. We also got some sneak peeks in his office and the stories he told us were pretty fun. As Mr. Smith is Ms. Sandul’s friend he did a activity with only our class. We designed shoes with the one word we got. I was stuck because my word was, “edible”. I couldn’t think of ideas so I was stressed. But still I managed to make a few designs. We also celebrated Halloween on Friday. So we used up about 4 periods. I think this week was a very busy week but we still accomplished a lot of stuff.
