On Tuesday, September 27th 2011, our school had organized a field trip to visit ArtJam. The purpose of this field trip was to use art as a way of expressing our emotions to the audience. My class together with two other classes went to ArtJam which is located at Windsor House in Causeway Bay. I was really happy when we were going there on the school bus. But when we arrived I felt very nervous because I thought I am not a really good painter, I kept thinking that I was going to mess up. I already knew what I was going to paint, I was going to paint a beach with a ocean scenery. I was still not sure that if it would turn out what I wanted.
The instructors told us to take off our shoes, pick a painting canvas and wear a apron. Under the canvas, there were many paint brushes ranging from big ones to small ones. The instructors explained us how to use a scraper and a sponge; and they also showed us what methods we should use to paint. For example, if we needed to paint something horizontal, it would be better to rotate the canvas, then we could brush easily vertically to get horizontal result better.
After the introduction, I started to do my painting. I took the main color I wanted for my background, which was blue. I was very worried that I might mess up but after a while I was really confident in what I was painting. I started using the sponge, after the scraper then the big paint brush. Later on I used the other brushes. The colors I used later was turquoise (mix of blue and green), light blue and brown. After I finished the painting, I realized that all our artworks would be exhibited at our school’s Leo Lee Art Centre. I was so excited about it! And the reason I used Blue so much because everyone in my class choose a color that they would use the most and I choose blue!
Later, we had to wash our feet, hands and put all our used brushes in a big bucket and then we went for lunch. There was no room for us to have our lunch, so we had to sit on the floor near ArtJam. My grade’s Supply Teacher, Mr.Dave, who was really strict on us not making any mess. When we have finished eating, we went back to ArtJam and pick up our paintings which were already nicely packed in a box individually, and then we had to put our own name on it. After we carefully placed the paintings in the school bus and headed back to school.
I thought I did okay for my painting which was a Maldivan perspective view. A light blue sky, bright sun, dark ocean water, shallow water and a beach. Maybe I could have done better that I did not know, but I was satisfied with it. The reason we went to visit Art Jam was for our Unit of Inquiry topic which was about communication, because art could be another way of communicating by expressing our emotions. So, my emotion for my painting was that I had a fond memory of the beach scenery which reminded me when I was young I spent time with my father at the beach.
Our school would be inviting all the parents and the students from Grade 5 to see the exhibition at the LLAC on October 6th, it would show off all our paintings. I was really excited! Overall it was a very very fun time I really hope that one day I could go back and do another painting!
