EXAM!!!

by 084064 on June 7, 2011

Today my teacher asked me:

How will you prepare for the exam?

I said I will search for websites on the internet so I can read them and write some notes. I will also look at my human body book. The human body book is a book that has all the systems in it and a lot of info. I will also look at my cheat sheet. The cheat sheet is a paper that you can write anything on that you need for the exam. Those are the ways I am going to study. I hope I do well!!!

Grade 9 Simulations

by 084064 on May 26, 2011

In our class and Mr .Machpherson’s class we went to a grade 9 civics class because they had to present a simulation. A simulation is to pretend to be something but you are not. There simulation was on how people in the world are not as lucky as us. For example one of them was when you were blind folded and you could not see anything and you had to try to find the food. another simulation was when we had to sit on the floor and watch two people eat all they want and we had to eat bread.  After the simulation we had to do a survey to say what we liked the most, what we did not like etc. I really enjoyed the simulation and I thought it was cool to feel like you are poor and to see how hard it is to be them.

SLLR

by 084064 on May 3, 2011

SLLR stands for student led learning review. What happens is your parents come in to school and you show them all the work you have done in school. It was my second SLLR and I really enjoyed it because you get to show your parents how hard you have been working, I like to answer their questions, I like being a leader and it makes me happy to see my parents walk out of the school with a smile on their faces. I cant wait until the next SLLR!

Artifacts

by 084064 on April 28, 2011

In our class we were making artifacts out of clay. The task was to make a old artifact and I made a chinese coin. What we were going to do with these artifacts was go to the beach and dig up other people’s artifacts. What you had to do was to go to a plot that you were assigned to and when you got to your plot you had to dig up other people’s artifacts. Once everyone found someone else’s artifact we went back to the school and we had to glue the artifact back together. Then you had to make a sheet of where you found it, what you thought it was, how old it was, if it was in good condition, how many pieces you found and finally you had to draw it on a paper. After everyone in the grade finished the sheet you were supposed to go to other people’s classrooms and find your artifact. Then you had to find it an bring it back to your class. That was the whole project and I really enjoyed it.

Better Blogging Battle Challenge #7 (poll)

by 084064 on April 6, 2011

First of all I would like to THANK all of you for taking the time to check out my blog and answering my poll question.  For this week’s challenge we had  to think of an AWESOME question with at least 5 possible answers.  After about a week of receiving responses, we then were asked to write a blog post explaining the challenge and the results we collected.  Its been about a week and first of all I was surprised about the number of responses I received, especially from the United States. Its great to have people from different countries viewing my blog.  I noticed that a lot of people voted for: “I want to see what Kate is wearing” and “It is an historic event.”  Hardly any one voted for “I am not going to watch it.”  If anyone is curious how I voted, I chose I will be watching because it is an historic event which ties into our Unit of Inquiry: Where we are in Place in Time. The wedding of Prince William and Kate is an historic event and it will be interesting in the future to see how they are both perceived. Everyone enjoy watching and stay tuned for future blog postings.

Green School

by 084064 on April 3, 2011

Today in our class we went to a website that talks about a Green school that is in Bali. The school building is made of  bamboo. The school gets their electricity from this little pool of water that has a whirlpool in it. The school has half foreign kids and the school gives scholarship to the local kids who otherwise could not afford to attend. The Green school teaches the kids how to be enviromental.

The National Treasure Movie

by 084064 on March 30, 2011

In our class we are watching a movie called National Treasure.  The reason we are watching this movie is because in our current Unit of Inquiry we are learning about is “Where we are in Place in Time” which has to do with people and their history and how we interpret them.   The National Treasure movie has to do with our unit because there is a lot of interesting history in it .  In our class we have only watched up to the middle part so I don’t no how it ends yet.  In this movie there is a group of people looking for a treasure because they want to become rich. In order to find the treasure they have to first find the clues that lead to the treasure.  Also at the beginning of the movie all  the people seem to be good but then some turn bad because they want the treasure for themselves.  Here is a list of five main events in the National Treasure movie that we have watched so far:

1.  Benjamin (the smart one) found a boat that had been lost for centuries. This is important because on the boat they thought that there could be a clue to the treasure. When they were on the boat they found  a clue which told them that on the back of the Declaration of Independence there is an invisible map which could lead them to the treasure.

2. Benjamin goes to Philidalphia to get the Declaration of Independence.  Ian ( bad guy)  is also going there too to get the Declaration of Independence. Benjamin gets the Declaration of Independence before Ian can steal it.

3.  Benjamin goes to his Dad’s house to find another clue which is in special letters that were written a long long time ago. While at  his Dad’s house, Benjamin makea a special liquid. This liquid will reveal what was on the back of the Declaration of Independence. What they see on the back of the Declaration of Independence is a list of numbers.

4. They figured out that the Dad gave the letter’s to a muesem in Philidalphia. On the letter was a bunch of letters that would lead them to the next clue.

5. They figured out from the letters that the next clue was in the liberty bell. When Benjamin found the clue it was a pair of glasses. The glasses were used to see the clue on the back of the Declaration of Independence and they saw a symbol. But before they could figure out what it meant Ian showed up and started chasing them and got the Declaration of Independence but he did not get the glasses which showed where to go next.

And that is where we are in the movie so far. I am so excited to see the rest of the movie!!!

Artifact Game

by 084064 on March 15, 2011

In our class we have a unit and this unit we are on is Hong Kong’s past. In our class we are playing this game called the artifact game. What the artifact game is our teacher picks an artifact and we have to figure out what it is,where it came from, how old it is and who made it. We are also learning what the difference between guessing and interpretation. I think that interpretation in a lot different because I think it means to look at the facts and interpret what the object means and I think that guessing means just take a random guess. I want you readers to play the artifact game on this picture. When you finish playing the artifact game comment on my blog.

Cemetery

by 084064 on March 2, 2011

Today in our class we went to the cemetery. The reason our class went to the cemetery was because our unit is on history. So we went to the cemetery and I looked at a lot of graves and there was this one area that I found the most interesting was where there was a sign that said there was a fever that killed about one hundred people. At the beginning of this trip I did not know much about Hong Kong’s history but now I know that back in the 18 hundreds there was not much medical help so many people died. I thought I learned a ton of stuff when I went to the cemetery and one of those things was that it is very disrespectful to stand or to laugh at a grave. If you do then you must say sorry. There are also multiple cemeteries in Hong Kong.  There is a Chinese cemetery where one of my friends great grand parents. There are other cemeteries that also have people buried from different nationalities.

Iqbal

by 084064 on February 18, 2011

In our  class we read a book called Iqbal. In my opinion it was a good book and it made me see things that I would have never known about and how much harder Iqbal’s life was to mine. I think our class read this book because it was related to our unit and because it was a good book. What I have learnt from this book is that we have to stop poverty and save the children. The most difficult part in this book was understanding the word brawl. I would like to know more about brick factories.

Chinese New Year Break

by 084064 on February 10, 2011

For my Chinese  New Years  break from CDNIS  (Canadian International School of Hong Kong) I relaxed, played with friends, played tennis and  went to Disney for a  night.  It was nice not to get up sooooo early each morning for school.  One of the days, I went with my brother and some of his classmates to the movie, Yogi bear and we ate at Pizza Express. While I was with my family at Disney,  we went on the Space Mountain ride with my family.  It was very cool because it is pitch black when you go on it and there are a lot of quick turns. We also went on this ride called Tea Cup.  After that we went to back to our Hotel to go swimming to cool off.  Then we went to eat dinner at this Chinese restaurant. I had Pe-king duck. Finally, we went back to our room, watched some tv and fell asleep.  For the remainder of the holiday,  I basically played on the computer, watched television and played tennis.I thought I had a really fun chinese new year break.  Gong Xi Fa Cai, the year of the rabbit!

Better Blogging Battle

by 084064 on January 25, 2011

In our grade there is a contest called the better blogging battle. The better blogging battle is a contest where our teacher gives us writing assignments to do on our blog and if you win you get a very good prize.  I am very excited to be in this competition because I think it can improve my writing skills and it will encourage me to write more on my blog and learn more about my blog. I hope that I can win the contest and I will try my hardest to do all the tasks the teacher assigns me.  In addition to this battle, I will be increasing the frequency of my reading, because reading and writing go together.

My Weekend

by 084064 on January 24, 2011

Hello Everyone,

What a busy weekend I had. Friday and Saturday I went to birthday parties that were alot of fun and I played in a soccer tournament for my school on Sunday. It was great to be with friends during all these activities. Our soccer team won two games, tied one and lost one. The other team from our school that played at the same time lost one of the final games in penalty kicks. It was exciting to watch. We missed a couple, just barely, but the team played well. I also played some tennis on Sunday and learned some Chinese and read.

Sara and Michael visit different countries  teach Kids about poetry and how to write it.  I think that they are very smart people because they write and speak very well in a way I can easily understand.  Poems might not be my favorite as I find them difficult to write but I did enjoy learning more about them today.

My Reading Buddy

by 084064 on January 18, 2011

My reading buddy and I see each other every Tuesday during period 7. She is younger in Prep and says she likes the color purple and I told her I like the color green. We are both very excited for Chinese New Year. Dia is going to india and I will be hanging out with my family in Hong Kong.  Some things I have found out about my reading buddy besides the color she likes most are: she wants a “psp” for christmas,  she likes to play with dogs and her favorite food is broccoli (not mine).   Since she is my reading buddy I guess I should say something about reading…….

We both like to read, although I must admit one of my goals is to read more. Her favorite type of book has animals in them and mine are full of action.

The Actual Grade 5 performance

by 084064 on January 14, 2011

Ok, so the Grade 5 performance was not  so “Scary.”   The audience clapped and sang along to some of the songs, especially the Earth Song. A big thanks to Mr. Shaw  and the Grade 5 teachers for helping us make this performance possible. My Mom said she is going to take the bus more. Also instead of packing water bottles we will keep reusing a water bottle. Might not seem like alot but hopefully we are thinking in the right direction.

The “Scary” Grade 5 Performance

by 084064 on January 12, 2011

There is a really  scary performance today January 12 , 2011. I only say its scary for two reasons: 1) to get you to read this blog and 2) some of the students are not as comfortable being up on stage as others, so it can be scary for them.  My group 5D, will perform a drama that is really funny any we also have to perform 1 song that is called the Earth song by Michael Jackson. I hope it will go well for us as a class and grade. I am excited as my parents are coming to watch. Grade 5 is hoping that the audience understands how important waste management is and that each one of us can make a difference.

My Winter Break

by 084064 on January 3, 2011

Happy Holidays 2010!!!!

For my winter break my Mom, brother and I flew to the United States of America on Delta Airlines to visit family and attend a tennis camp in Florida.  For more info. on this camp here is the link imgacademies.com.  We went to spend time with family and play tennis at a sleep away camp with some friends.  One of my friends is going to a boarding school in England so I figured that this would be one of the last times I would be able to see him.   When we got to Florida we immediately went to our hotel because we had been on a 16 hour flight. The next day we went to see our friend at the movie theatre, and saw the new Harry Potter movie.   I thought that the movie was great and I can’t wait  to see the second part of the movie coming out in June 2011. After we saw that movie we went to dinner at this really good Italian restaurant, I had the  meat ravioli and it was the best I’ve ever eaten.  We spent the next couple days relaxing and getting adjusted to the time zone before we started tennis camp. Then when we started camp, we met Nick Bolleteri!  We were at the tennis camp for two weeks and a typical day’s schedule was from 8 to 11 was drilling training,  11 to 12 was fitness,  12 to 1, lunch and from 1 to 4 was match play,   During the first weekend, my mom picked us up and we drove 4 and a half hours to our Aunt and Uncle’s  house to celebrate Christmas with them. We had a great time.

During our stay at the tennis camp we made some good friends that we will keep in touch with. We hope to go back but we will have to see.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

by 084064 on January 2, 2011

This week we had an assignment to read a book that was at least 100 pages long. The book I chose was Charlie and The Chocolate Factory , which was 189 pages long. The story is about a little boy, named Charlie.  Charlie’s family was very poor, his Dad works at a toothpaste factory where he screws caps on toothpaste tubes all day long.  You don’t get paid much working at a toothpaste factory. Everyday when Charlie goes to school he walks by a chocolate factory. This factory sells the best chocolate in the world and it is owned by Mr. Wonka .  One day there was an exciting article in the news paper.  It said that Mr. Wonka is going to give a special tour of his chocolate factory to the holders of the 5 Golden Tickets. Each of these tickets were hidden in five separate chocolate bars that could be purchased all around the world.

Wa$ted Video Reflection

by 084064 on November 28, 2010

Today in our class we watched a video  called “Wasted.”   The video showed farmers burning plastic and wasting resources. There was a different  group that was more eco friendly which was teaching the farmers how to be more eco freindly. The things they helped them with was to get a new fridge because it was causing them the most money also there garden was not looking pretty so the group helped them plant a brand new garden. At the end of the movie they said that they would pay them back for all the money  that they saved using the eco friendly ways so they came back in three weeks and gave them back 5,000 dollars.

In this story I learned many different ways to save the envirorment.

There is a word called the Third person, third person means the guy that was standing next to you when the accident occurred. An example of perspective is when you get into a fight with someone you both have a perspective on what happened.this is a picture of perspective.images

Cyber Saftey

by 084064 on November 17, 2010

On Wednesday November 10th our grade went to a class where went to learn about how to be a good cyber citizen and how to take care of cyber bullying.

When we went there we sat down and she started to speak about cyber bullying and how it can effect you. The first task she asked us to do was to write a few things about how to be a good digital citizen. The things that our group wrote about was to be a good cyber citizen is to never ever bully other kids and do not send junk mail to people.

After that task we had to tell our answers to her. After that she gave us homework to do which was a digital footprint a digital foot print is when you post something on the internet  and that is part of your digital footprint .

The next day when we went back we handed in our digital footprint . Then we learned about this teenage girl called stacey  that got cyber bullied because she commented on some girls boyfriend blog and the girl got really upset. So she brought her friend into the problem and then stacey  started to get cyber bullied and stacey got upset and she lost a lot of her friends because of this. After we watched this we finished and said thank you and left.

I thought that I learned  a lot.I also had a lot of fun.

Our class just started a new unit of inquiry which is about garbage waste management. Our new unit is about how we  can try to stop polluting the earth and how we can solve this problem with solutions.

The things I already know about garbage are the 3r’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. I also know that garbage is a big problem because a lot of people just don’t care if they throw away something that can be recycled.  Once you throw the garbage away it goes to a dump and gets burned or put in a land fill. The concern with burning garbage that is plastic it gives off toxic fumes and causes global warming to occur.  Global warming is when too much carbon dioxide gets in the air and makes holes in the ozone layer. Too much global warming will make the Artic melt.

The things that I think are going to happen in this unit are we are going to do and think about lots of things that help the earth such as recycle and try to not waste anything such as plastic bags. We will also learn more about garbage waste management.

I am excited about this unit because we get to learn about a problem that the whole world needs to solve. I am also excited because myself and other students can learn about all the things we can do to solve solid waste management.

My weekend

by 084064 on November 8, 2010

The weekend of November 6th was great although it has been raining since Thursday so tennis got rained out on Friday and Saturday. Saturday I went to Sylvan. I am trying to work on my reading and writing skills. Later in the day we went to Stanley to Wildfire with my chinese tutor, her children and my brother. At Wildfire,  we ate  our dinner which was pizza, spare ribs and a salad for my tutor. Once we finished dinner, we got a free balloon from the waiter. Then we took the  balloon downstairs and played with it, and played more games we played were monkey in the middle. Once we finished playing we went to get a taxi at the taxi stand, and hopped in the taxi. When we got home my Mom and Dad put us to bed.

The rained held off on Sunday so I could play in my tennis tournament 12 and under Novice.  It was the third round of the tournament, I got a bye for my first round and my second round I won 6-4 . My third match was against a sixth grader that goes to the same school as me! It was a really close match , we had lots of long rallies and the match lasted  over an hour. I won 7 -5 . After a 45 minute  break I played against the 1st seed and lost 7-6, in a tiebreaker. It was a great match and I was tired by the end.  After the match I went home and took a rest for the remainder of the day, so I could get ready for school the next day.

Art JamaLama

by 084064 on November 8, 2010

On Monday , November 1st, our class went on our first field trip which was to Art JamaLama. Art JamaLama is a place where you do portraits of yourself  in a unique way. When we went there we had to leave our bags, socks and shoes outside because the paint is permanent and if you get the paint on your shoes and socks It will never come off.  Once we dropped our stuff outside we went inside and the instructor showed us to the colors and how to make a painting.  Then we went to our blank canvas and the fun began. First, we needed to decide our  background color, and  I picked  light green. Second, we starting making our portrait. Third,  once we finished our portraits we had to clean our hands and organize our stations. Fourth, we went outside and put on our socks and shoes and start eating your lunch.  Finally, after we all ate lunch we got on our bus we went back to our school.

I enjoyed  Art JamaLama because we got to paint and be messy while trying at the same time to be creative and make a portrait of ourselves.

My October Break

by 084064 on October 25, 2010

On my October break I played tennis almost everyday.  In addition to tennis, I went to Ocean Park, watched  television and played with friends. The highlight of my october break was going to Ocean Park with my chinese tutor and my brother.  The reason we went with our Chinese tutor was we were going to try and have the experience in Chinese. We tried speaking with her in Chinese while we were there. When we went to Ocean park we played lot’s and lot’s of games. We also went on many rides like the Pirate Boat and the space wheel. After the rides we ate at McDonald’s, not my Mom’s favorite place for us to eat :).

As I mentioned I played alot of tennis. I have been playing in some tournaments. The tournament during break was especially fun because it was doubles vs. singles, so I had a partner who I am also friends with.  We lost 8 to 4, but I felt it was a good tennis match.

Otherwise I played with friends and relaxed by watching television. I enjoy school breaks because you do not have to worry about school work.

Blog Action Day (Clean Water)

by 084064 on October 15, 2010

Did you know that there are over 4200 people are dying every week because they do not have clean water. That is why you should go to http://blogactionday.change.org/. When ever you drink water do you ever think about the people that do not have any water. Think about if you ever waste water. The way you can preserve water is not taking long showers. When you brush your teeth you have to turn off the water when you  brush your teeth

Are New Unit of Inquiry-How the World Works

by 084064 on October 7, 2010

This week we started a new unit. We are studying matter and material in this unit of inquiry. I am going to tell you what I already know about the unit, what I don’t know and how I feel about the unit.

The things I already know are that matter is everything. I also know the states of matter are gas, liquid, solid and plasma.I also know that matter can not be destroyed.  An example of why matter not being destroyed is after you burn wood there is still ash.

The things I do not know are what properties or particles are.

So far in this unit I feel happy because I am getting to learn chemistry learn and new things. Overall I have a feeling that this is going to be a good unit.
