My Buried and Found Artifact

by Justin on April 25, 2011

Sorry for the delay for this post. It was supposed to be published a long time ago.

In Grade 5, in the unit Where we are in Place and Time we made our own artifacts and we get to dig up another person’s artifact in the South Bay Beach! If you go to the very left side of the beach, where the rocks are, you should probably dig up some more parts of the artifact because some people did not find the whole artifact. When I was digging for an artifact, I felt like I was an archeologist! It was very fun! You should try it!

A month before, we made our artifact. First, we had to find what artifact we would make. So I went to internet and found this clock. It was Paris and made in 1863. So I drew down this design and copied it into the sheet named “My Buried Artifact”. We had to complete this sheet before we make the artifact. You had to say when, where it was made, the color, and other facts of the artifact. Then we could make the artifact.

It was really fun making the artifact! We had to make the artifact out of clay, but first I held the artifact. It was heavy! Our teacher explained that there could not be air inside the clay, or else when the clay dries, it will break. So I was really careful to not let the air in. First I did the base, then the clock itself with the decoration on top. I was really satisfied with my artifact. I left it to dry for a few days.

After when the artifacts were dried, our teacher told us to paint them. My clock was peach color, but there was no peach, so I had to use orange. It still worked. The clock looked very fine, but the words were hard. Then our teachers took our artifacts and smashed them! So we had to go to the beach and find another person’s artifact. There are pits. In the pits, there will be 5 artifacts.

After a long and exhausting digging, we all managed to find pieces for a artifact. We went back to school and glued all the pieces together. So after we put all the pieces together, we needed to complete a sheet that asks us when you think it was made/discovered, the name of the artifact, what it looks like. I thought that it looks like a cup.

But then when we showed our found artifact, I found out my artifact was found as 2 different artifacts! They thought the base was one part and the actual clock was the other part.
