Through out this unit, I have gone through a lot of steps and by the end of the unit, I figure that I have made an improvement from the past.
Firstly, when we started the unit, we started off by breaking down our whole central idea into simpler words using synonyms. It was actually quite interesting and fun. Our whole class gave different words and our teacher noted the words down.
Secondly we went to field trips, the S.E.N.T landfill and the Eco park. It was very engaging, going to a real landfill. During our visit, I took a lot of pictures. This is a very valuable experience. I have also seen the mechanisms they use at the landfill.
Lastly, we did research for the six different waste management strategies. As a class, we use our 5A “Google Doc” and put our research on different methods. So we can access the classes’ summative assessment offline and edit the orginial for all to comment.
The day of speech came, we had to make a speech in front of the whole class and the teachers. The teachers were assessing me on my public speaking skills. I was like ants on a hot pot and feeling frantic on what was happening at that time. Anyway, before the first speaker came up the teacher asked us to jot down notes on the impacts of the six different waste management strategies for our two Summative tests. The first speaker came up, while he talked, the whole class jotted down notes. His speech was good, he met all the criteria on how to give a speech. He had eye contact, gestures and most importantly expression. I admire him a lot. After a while, it was my turn to talk about composting. I was not scared at all. In fact I believe I performed quite well.
