Business Ethics

by 074153 on January 15, 2016

1. How does what I have learned help me to understand the relevant SOI?
What I have learned helps me to understand the relevant SOI “Students understand that businesses interact in a global environment and are held accountable (ethics) by society for their actions” because I now understand how to answer this question as well as provide thorough justifications of my reasoning. By doing my summative Ethics Monologue, I have researched about Apple’s ethics and what they have done. By knowing this, I have been able to understand how society reacts to certain actions and what happens if they are caught doing something unethical. Also, by doing my monologue I have learned that different companies act depending on what location they are in. For example, factories in China tend to treat their workers unethically, such as Foxconn factories. However, there have been no reports of Foxconn treating their employees unfairly in North American factories.
2. How does what I have learned fit within the relevant global context?
What I have learned helps fit within the relevant global context because what I have learned mainly through my monologue doesn’t only apply to one country or one company, it usually applies to many. This fits within the relevant global context because it shows me how similar actions made by companies happen on a global scale. What I have learned through my research on Apple’s ethics has also showed me that globally, different actions are made in different companies (generally). Although you make thing well of course, what I mean is that the extent of their ethical actions varies globally. For example, usually in a more developing country, companies will be able to exploit the working force for cheap labor, and access materials cheaply as well.
3. How does what I have learned help me to answer the relevant inquiry question(s)
What I have learned helped me to answer the relevant inquiry questions because I have been able to specifically choose a company and answer the questions accordingly. Other than just one company, I have also ben able to gain a stronger general idea about companies and the extent that they incorporate ethical actions in their everyday business. Specifically relating to the questions, I know that determining what actions are ethical sometimes slightly varies depending on what country you are doing business in. For example, work hours, and wages. Some societies might think that lower wages are acceptable to them but if you go to another country, they may think that these low wages aren’t enough for what they need/want and what they work for. By understanding this, I know to always research thoroughly what I am trying to research about in order so that I know everything about it so I don’t draw conclusions based on pre-conceived ideas.
4. How does what I have learned connect with what I have learned previously to enrich my understanding of the SOI?
What I have learned connects with what I have previously learned to enrich my understanding because I now have reinforced knowledge of generalisations as well as case studies. For example, prior to this unit I knew that some companies treated their employees unfairly but I didn’t know and I didn’t have any specific examples. Not that I have research as well as understood some other companies, I have specific knowledge on certain companies. This impacts my understanding of the SOI because I can now answer it with thorough explanations as well as hard evidence
5. Examples of real – world situations that help explain the content further.
A real world example of companies treating their employees unfairly is Apple. Although Apple implies itself as a very ethical company and that it is doing more than any other company to ensure ethical behaviour, this is not the case. It has been found that Foxconn, a primary creator of Apple’s electronics in China, has ben mistreating it’s workers as well as taking away their idea cards and forcing them to work longer than is healthy. When other complaints similar to this was uncovered, Apple ensured that they would investigate these complaints. However, even after they supposedly investigated, issues continued to arise, putting more speculation on Apple.
6. An updated diagram or mind map to show how the SOI, inquiry questions and topics fit together.

The End of the Design Cycle

by 074153 on December 17, 2015

Throughout this project, I have learned many things. One of my greatest achievements being able to learn how to use Illustrator. Other than the technical side, one of my greatest achievements I think is being able to affectively manage my time. Although I am usually good at managing my time, since design is an extra subject that pops up during the year, it is sometimes hard to be able manage everything with the amount of work we have. The use of visuals helps to reinforce a particular message because it allows the audience to see what they think. Personally, I prefer looking at images as well because it helps form what you are saying in my head as well as it also engages the audience more. One of the reasons that graphic novels exist are to entertain normally reluctant readers. Graphic novels are more visually engaging towards the audience, which is why many people prefer graphic novels. Images can also give the audience setting, and descriptions of the character, rather than the audience imagining it for themselves. I believe that technology and natural techniques can facilitate the communication of ideas equally. Even though you can do many special affects and editing with technology, I think that you can still communicate the same way through naturalism, however I agree that it would be a lot harder. In my opinion, I would prefer naturalism techniques because I usually like the old and natural way, rather than the technical way even though I know they can show the same messages. Visuals can reveal meaning because you can use them as symbols.  When audience come across symbols, they make the connection between the image and another thought and the audience will be able to make meaning out of the symbol. Visuals can also change peoples’ perspectives because visuals can also be used to persuade people. For example, if a person doesn’t completely understand or disagrees with someones verbal argument, an image can help clarify and convince that maybe that idea isn’t so bad after all. While using illustrator, one of my main challenges was being able to colour in the details in small places. This was hard for me because I couldn’t figure out how to change the size of my brush so what ended up happening before my final editing stage was that I had coloured in the main bodies but there were still lots of white parts in small corners that I couldn’t get to. I overcame this challenge by experimenting around with Illustrator and clicking around on different functions. Eventually, I figured out that the way to solve my problem was to double click the paintbrush tool, and when a sub-screen pops up, there will be an option to make the font smaller. This helped me a lot because it allowed me to continue editing and it made the whole editing process a lot easier and more efficient. Another challenge that I faced was adding closure. This was a challenge for me because it was one of the conventions that I really wanted to apply but I wasn’t quite sure how to fit it in. Also, before, I was planning to also ink my second page before Mr. Rahman told us not to, and my closure is on the second page so it may be harder for the audience to understand and pick up on because they may not immediately recognise it. I overcame the challenge of deciding where to add closure by carefully examining the book and my storyboard. After thoroughly analysing both, I was able to justify that the best spot to add closure would be to have it between panel 9-10 (last two). Lastly, if I was to do this project again, I would next time put more detail into my character turnarounds. Even though I knew there didn’t have to be too much detail in them, I think that I didn’t put enough. The trouble with not putting enough was that I had to put in lots of the individual details manually, and sometimes they were slightly different in different panels. Overall, I am proud of what I have created and glad that I put as much effort as I did!
