What this book is about:
This book is about a little girl in 1911, her family wants her feet to get bound because of the Chinese tradition, but she rebels against the tradition. Then she starts to realize how powerless a girl with unbound feet is in the Chinese society. Then a series of sad events happened –– her grand-mother died of a stroke and her dad died of lung disease, dispute how upset she is, she ran away to an American family and became a amah (nanny in chinese ). Later, she met a person called James Chow on the ride back home with the family she is working with. Later in the book, James Chow and Ailin got married and she lived quite a good life with him in China Town. She is also very proud of her unbound feet.
Connections with my life:
Well in the beginning when she stood against the tradition of having her feet bound she was confident and risk taking, because although she saw her mother slap her sister, she still stood strong, (knowing that she might get slapped too). So this situation connects to my life because when I did the poster for this book with my group (school task) I knew that I failed multiple times doing this design, but I really wanted to try it again, so I did, and this time it worked, so that shows that I had to risk a lot to do this, and I and a risk taker. Here is my poster:

Conclusion:
I think this is a pretty good book because it has a lot of different perspectives, it also is based on real history (bound feet). I also like how it states the values of the different people in this book. So I would recommend this book to anyone from grade 4-8. The bad thing about this book, well not exacly bad, it just depends how you look at it, is that it is too simplified, meaning that there is a much bigger meaning behind it, it just doesn’t state it because it is too complicated. So if there was a bit of that it would be better. But overall it is a great book.
