16 Bar Rhythm Composition – Reflection

Feb 25: I finished adding 8 more bars to the original 8 bar melody I had, and repeated some measures, but also added some new notes and rhythms to it. I adjusted my melody a little bit in the end because I wanted there to be a variation of conjunct and disjunct notes, as most of my melody consisted of conjunct notes. I also started with the chord progression, and began to create my rhythm and decided what chords went well with my melody. I chose the clarinet as the instrument to play the melody because I play the clarinet in class, so I thought that if I used it as my main instrument, I could really tell whether the notes fit together and are in harmony.

March 2: I finished up the melody of the clarinet and started to work on the accompaniment of the piano. I figured it was harder to do this part because I had to find which notes and what will suite my original melody, and later on I realized that the piano part was too low, and it was contrasting with the melody of the clarinet. In the accompaniment, I mainly kept a monotone rhythm because I didn’t want to distract attention from the clarinet, and didn’t want it to overpower because it would feel like too much, and it would sound messy. I added slurs to the eighth notes because I thought that it would sound better than if it wasn’t slurred. After I finished the melody, chords, and accompaniment, I listened to my composition and realized that some parts didn’t sound right, and it didn’t blend well together. I also thought that my composition needed more texture, as it was quite plain, and didn’t include a variety of high and low notes. There wasn’t really a form in my melody, but I did repeat some of the measures, so I used repetition, and it worked out quite well because it means I didn’t add a lot of new things to change my melody, and mainly kept it within the same notes. I found writing the accompaniment challenging because it had to suite the melody, it had to have conjunct and disjunct notes along with a range, but it couldn’t overpower the melody too much. Overall, I think my composition has its good sides and bad sides, but it is quite simple, so I think next time I should challenge myself more to doing a melody with higher notes, and using more tempo markings, articulation markings, and dynamic markings.

This 8 bar melody is a adjustment from the rhythm in my previous post. This melody includes different notes, and uses a combination of conjunct and disjunct motion.

My Learning in Music

How has the content covered in class so far (theory and performance) helped your development as a musician?

I think the content covered in class has helped my development as a musician because the theory really helped me understand how to read the notes easily, and know the flats and sharps with barely any problem. I think theory has also helped me recognize the key signature the song is in, and it has made me more comfortable and familiar with it. The performance part has helped me because I’ve learnt songs with higher notes, which therefore makes the song harder, and challenges me.

Discuss the ways in which you are furthering your development as a musician.

Since there are some songs with notes above the brake, on the clarinet, the high notes are quite hard to play, so I’ve gotten help from Mr. Dacho, and he taught me some exercises I can do, and tips on how to reach those notes, so I think thats how I am furthering my development as a musician.

Discuss how other musicians have inspired you to be more successful (consider musician in your class and/or in the school and/or outside of school).

I don’t think that a specific musician has inspired me, but I would pick one of the music teachers because they are all very passionate about music, and they’re all willing to teach us more. They also play a lot of instruments, and also play them really well, so I think that I should learn how to play the clarinet with passion, and have confidence in myself that I can play it well.
