Axiom and Proofs

Sketch an initial outline or brainstorm to your KQ

RLS: During math class, I noticed how numbers and concepts are interlinked within one another which forms an answer to a following question. However what I am fascinated with is that when a number or a different set of numbers that were unfamiliar can totally change your perception of understanding.

First Order Claim: Within math itself, there is unfamiliarity when just changing one variable of a problem.

Second Order Claim: One variable can change the outcome regardless of other controlled variables.

Knowledge framework on the picture on the right.

Today we discussed the difference between pseudoscience and natural science.

I would describe that pseudoscience is the untruthful science where a claim is supported by facts that are manipulated in order to persuade or achieve a goal that the author would like to convey. Whereas in natural or any other science would be facts that would back up a claim or a theory.

I would argue that pseudoscience and “the true” science can be hard to distinguish. This is the fact that our sense of perception maybe unable to comprehend the “truth”. I would say that it would be hard to “find the truth” whereas in different where we find a correlation. I believe that the theories that scientists create do not tend to convey the “real” knowledge rather then a correlation or a relationship with a trend.

WOK Review

Today in TOK class, we summarised what we learned about the Ways of Knowing. We mainly discussed how since each WOK has flaws and is imperfect. How do we continue to obtain knowledge. And today in class we were introduced to Plato’s criteria in how to define knowledge. He classified that knowledge had to meet three requirements. It had to be justified, it had to be true and it had to be believed by the majority of people.

I do feel like the truth element of knowledge is somewhat questionable. As I think that what we view as truth is only the capability that we can find out about what really is “true” in our own judgement. For example in natural sciences, we only see things as the “truth” through correlations on one factor and the other and looking at an overall trend. This is the extent that we can call the truth. However we can assume that this is only a side effect to the real “truth” and that there are hidden factors that we are unable to answer based on our limitations as a species in terms of technologically, or comprehensibility. So I do feel like when it terms of knowledge, I believe that faith has a bigger part then whether the actual piece of knowledge is the “truth”. As I think that as a social species, we tend to believe and to follow other people and by powerful figures and credible sources, we believe that the information we receive is the truth. Where I think that it is mainly from what we believe.

The most meaningful WOK that I think we should keep is faith. As I think that in our TOK classes, we really had a very in depth discussion of how we think that faith is needed in any knowledge claim or any fact that we study. Especially with how even there is scientific evidence that back up claims and theories, it is important that the receiver/ society have faith in the evidence that backs up theories, informations that we know today. As I made an example before, in mathematics we are taught basic operations and from then on we had faith that 2 + 2 = 4 based on the information we had from our technological and logical capabilities. Even though when there are physical things representing this equation, it could be further from the truth and we only believe that this is solid information.

I think that if we poke too many holes in Ways of Knowing however different AOK’s have different requirements, I think that there is no definite answer as in which WOK is applied to which AOK, and as humans we are not comfortable with the unknown and the fact that we think that these WOK’s are the only way we can receive information and knowledge. It is scary for us to think that all the ways that we know how to perceive information has many different flaws. I think that in general, intuition and reasoning (the two ways of knowing we were taught) help us to judge these decisions that we may not be aware of. For example, we use reasoning, imagination and memory to receive information from maths. This is because maths is conceptual and abstract which requires imagination to grasp a better understanding by relating and linking ideas, memory and reasoning as maths requires logic. Whereas the AOK of natural sciences may require a different set of skills from a completely different set of WOK. So I think that by using logic from the WOK of intuition and reasoning, we judge which AOK is to be used.

I think after this lesson, I acknowledge there is a capital T truth and a smaller t truth after these several TOK lessons. However I do find it difficult to distinguish between the two “truths”. As I believe that capital T truth may refer to the actual truth and information that we are able to perceive in general despite our limitations of the way we know things and the technological tools that we attempt to see the truth. And with the smaller capital t truth being referred to how we as a species refer to it as the truth which may not be the case at all beyond or within our World. For example, in Natural Sciences we may think that a causation is linked with a correlation which produces an effect. However this can be counter-claimed as we only use patterns, experiments and attempt to control factors that may be out of our capability. So I think that in general it is very hard to distinguish the two truths as we have limitations as a species and we also have technological limitations that may hinder us from seeing the capital T truth. But I do acknowledge that there are two truths.

Role of Imagination:

  • – Conceptualise and visualise hard to understand concepts/ideas in order to be more easily understanding.
  • – Able to get other viewers to understand more from what the speaker is trying to express
  • – However imagination can be altered and unrealistic
  • – Imagination may not convey a true perspective and can only be generalised in order to be applicable
  • – Our imagination can be limited to extend our perspectives to even beyond other’s, let alone different species

Role of Memory

  • – To grasp and effectively recall
  • – However like memory can also be altered and realistic
  • – Memory can be unrealistic and can be also altered by our sub-conciousness

However by explaining that memory and imagination is a double edged sword, we can still overcome these challenges that every human faces. For example, for memory we can use imagination as a way of knowing to a certain extent. As imagination mainly benefits us by looking at different perspectives and trying to understand and conceptualise easier. We can get the general idea  of concepts through the use of imagination and not rely as much on imagination to look at the specifics. For example, when looking at World War 2 we can imagine what it was like to be a soldier fighting on the battlefront of Normandy and makes it easier to understand the perspective of the soldier. However we should not rely on imagination as we do not what it was truly like to actually be in World War 2 and that imagination does not benefit us if we solely rely on this Area of Knowledge.  For memory, our teacher explained how memory can be used to help us gain knowledge by remembering previous concepts/ ideas that help us build on to our existing knowledge. For example, we need to know PEDMAS and the operations in order to do algebra in math. However just like how imagination or other WOK, there are limitations to memory. As memory is from our perspective our memory may be altered from the truth in order to support biasness or we remembered it wrong.

Overall, I think that just like any other WOK, memory and imagination are both double edged swords when gaining knowledge.

Today in TOK, we learned about the way of knowing of inductive and deductive reasoning. Although we may think that reasoning is the most powerful and most accurate, true or error free way of knowing. However, as always in TOK, our whole perception was shattered under 90 minutes. Although it seemed a little hard to grasp my head around, it did make sense eventually. What we learned basically was inductive and deductive reasoning. Basically using logic and what makes sense to us and validity in order to prove one’s point. For example if we assume that the statement below is true that all leaves are trees and all trees are barks. Then we would assume from inductive reasoning that all leaves are barks. This what I would assume the area of knowledge, natural sciences would typically use in order to justify their hypothesis. However this method can be prone to errors. For example in real life, before people assumed that tomatoes were poisonous because people fell ill and died when eating tomatoes. In fact, a chef of George Washington tried to assassinate him by putting tomatoes in his soup because that was general knowledge to everyone at that time. But soon after when the chef discovered that tomatoes were not poisonous. People started to wonder what poisoned them with the coincidence of them eating tomatoes. It turned out that people put tomatoes on plates made from high amounts of lead. This leads to the misconception of how tomatoes were poisonous. This can be applied to how reasoning can be error prone. Scientists knew that when people eating tomatoes, they would die, so assuming that that statement was correct, they thought all tomatoes were poisonous. However it was a coincidence that people kept eating tomatoes on plates made from lead, which was the real culprit.

Which was how I grasped the concept of how the area of knowledge of reasoning may not be so perfect that everyone thought after all.

Today in TOK, we mainly focused on the way of knowing of Emotion. And for our assignment today, we were assigned a knowledge claim and try to argue and counter-argue that specific knowledge claim that was related to what we learned; Emotion as a way of learning. We learned how emotion could be a double edged sword as it could be benefit or a hindrance to gain knowledge. Anyway, our specific knowledge claim that we had to create kind of a debate that counters each argument was the area of knowledge; the arts are all about emotional expression: emotion is the most important thing in this area of knowledge.

Basically, the arguments that supported that emotion was the most important way of knowing form the area of knowing of the arts was:

  1. Art is strategic, and is often judged in its beauty or emotional response which in itself beauty can be boiled down from emotions. This could be evident as one of the clips that we saw in class was a video called “The Greatest Speech Ever Made” and was performed by Charlie Chaplin. The speech itself aroused emotion from my fellow classmates and had a sense of beauty from the words Charlie Chaplin spoke or more importantly, how he spoke it which elicited patriotic and moving emotions from me and my fellow classmates.
  2. Art is usually opinionated and subjective. I believe that as art is not quantifiable and is abstract, we try to justify art through our opinions and how we connect with art. For example, when looking around a gallery, certain pieces make you feel a certain way.
  3. Art works can be used to tell stories which can elicit emotions. For example, a moving picture or a video or even a novel or speech. Like the video that we watched “The Greatest Speech Ever Made” in class.

Arguments that counter-claim that emotion is the most important drive-force for art:

  1. Art does not always exist to convey emotion, for example Michaelangelo Sistine Chapel’s art intentions were not to convey or express emotion, rather then to express religion and beliefs of Roman Catholics.
  2. Another way art may not necessary express emotion is through academics. Rather then what emotions were expressed in ones art, academics grade artworks by craftsmanship and a show of a variety of skills.

However based on the points conveyed above, I do believe that the purpose of art is to mainly be abstract, fluid and not rigid and structured and I believe that emotion allows us to look at art as an abstract fluid perspective. Whereas the counter arguments listed above makes art more rigid and structured which is what I do not think art should truly be.

IB DP Retreat Reflection

From 17th to the 18th of August, the class of 2019 (which I am in) went on a school retreat dubbed “The IB Retreat” at the Gold Coast hotel. It was a memorable and unique experience as there wasn’t such a large scale trip which involved all my classmates. During those two days, we did a poverty simulator in a local charity foundation called Crossroads, had a couple of group activities and watched a movie as a whole grade. I thought the whole trip was pretty interesting and fun as there are only few opportunities where you can hang out with all my friends at the same place. And this trip luckily gave me another opportunity.

This was definitely one of my highlights during the IB retreat; to hang out with all my friends as they gave us a lot of spare time during the first day of the retreat in the hotel. One activity I did with my friends during spare time was watching a superhero comedy film. This was definitely a highlight as even after watching the movie, we kept talking and analysing of the movie and bonded over as friends. Another way we bonded over was playing video games during our spare time. This allowed us to further develop our friendship between one another over the course of this retreat.

One event that really stood out during the trip in a educational and challenging aspect was when we did the poverty simulation during our time in Crossroads on the first day. We were put into groups which were our temporary “family”. We had to make paper bags out of newspaper as our income and each “week” (which was 10 minutes), we had to pay rent, water, food and optional sanitation. During this simulation, for a brief moment, I really felt like a slum dweller. Where I had no control over my life besides making paper bags to hopefully pay enough money by the end of each week. But after each week, my family would always come short to the minimum requirement to keep us alive each week. Overtime, we needed to sell our valuables that we brought with us to the simulation. In come cases it could have been our watches, phones, even our shoes! It was challenging in a sense that it was really stressful to make enough paper bags each week. But also educational as it taught me that being poor is more then just not having money. It was also having people to look down on you, having stress and worrying about whether we would survive for another week.

With this IB retreat, it has really developed my passion with video games, which allowed me and my friends to establish the Game Development Club in CDNIS, as from the IB retreat, I was able to spend a lot of time with my friends which allowed us to share our ideas to make a club about making video games. I think this really allowed me and my friends to develop our passion of video games and to condense it into a club that we would meet once a week. If it wasn’t for the IB retreat, I think it would take us a lot longer in order to condense our thoughts and ideas, as the IB retreat gave us a lot of spare time for us to hang out together.

Overall I really enjoyed the IB retreat as I think it gave me a very memorable experience and educated me a lot about the world we live in today.

Sense Perception

Today is another day where this mind blowing extravaganza continues with the TOK. In TOK today, we learnt about sense perception and how we do not know truly what really is the “real world” based on the limitations of our sensor due to our natural adaptations that helped our ancestors survived. For example, how we truly see colour is just from the perspectives of us, as humans. Where our eyes can miss information that our mind deems “unimportant” or can even interpret information, where in reality it is just an abstract image or object that our mind is so determined to make sense of.

However I think that Areas of Knowledge can help verify or correct us from our “faulty” senses. For example, in mathematics, we can calculate large numbers of objects, people, money or etc. with precise calculations based on smaller measurements where we can firmly confirm that what our senses recognise is true. For example, with measuring populations, it is unreliable if you just look at a jar of candy and estimate how many candy treats are in a jar. But with mathematics and precise measurement, we can know precisely how much candy is in a jar without opening it and with just measurements.

I think its a big concept to tackle but I think in time, I will get used to having this giant bombshell just shake all my beliefs or things I am confident at.

Intro to Ways of Knowledge

Today in Theory of Knowledge, I learned about the different ways of knowing and areas of knowledge. Basically ways of knowing include but not limited to reasoning, language, emotion, instinct, imagination and etc. Basically anything or any method that allows you to gather knowledge. For example, with emotion, it could allow you access of knowledge about empathy, how other’s feel like or unlike you. It could be applied to the Arts (ie. painting, cooking, music etc.) As arts heavily rely on the knowledge of the artist with emotions in order to start a piece/painting/dish. This could also be applied to other ways of knowledge. And today we talked about how different areas of knowledge (ie. subjects like maths, natural science, arts, human science etc.) could be a double edged sword that can help you gain but also be a weakness and limit your ability with bias and stubbornness. For me, I think how you would distinct what WOK with AOK depends on the context. For example, in science, I try to have an unbiased and neutral standpoint and just look at the evidence and facts that science give me. In which I would limit my WOK in emotion, instinct and etc. And focus more on reasoning, language and etc. Whereas in Art, focuses more on an human aspect and less on evidence and reasoning. So I would focus my WOK in emotions, instinct and less quantifiable WOK.

Design Project: Making a Documentary

During this past month, me and two other classmates have been working on a documentary about people migrating from China to Hong Kong, we had to conduct interviews with people that we knew and go through a one month process. From the goals that we wanted to achieve, I think that, informatively, our group did succeed in this sector as I think our documentary was able to give an insight onto how individuals moved to Hong Kong based on their previous life conditions in Guangzhou and the motivation that drove them to move to Hong Kong. I feel like this was achieved as I feel like all three interviews were all very content heavy when providing personal details about all 3 interviewees. This would really benefit our audiences as there is not a lot of variety when it comes to personal experiences of civilians moving from China to Hong Kong on the internet. This is also evident from the feedback our group got from a class screening where our classmates had to complete a survey that we created. However, when creating a general theme or mood, I think we failed at that. I feel like our group was not as coordinated as it should be as our director had a different approach in mind compared to our other group members. However as a group member, I should also take responsibility of our uncoordinated way of working and how our documentary feels more like 3 separate interviews rather then one cohesive documentary as a whole.  Also with feedback from the audience expressing confusion between what theme our documentary was trying to aim, I feel like this was really evident from the unconnected collaboration between me and my group mates. Overall I feel like if I did this project all over again, I would like to coordinate and communicate with my group members more effectively and more frequently, I fee like at the beginning of the project, we were working as a team. However during the middle and the end of the project, i feel like each group member did their own thing. So I think after this project, it really taught me the importance of working together during a group project.

My CAS Reflection

Heart Valve Project

In Design, we recently designed a heart valve model to teach a younger audience about the heart and specifically, the heart valve. One of the major changes I made was the type of flap I implemented with my model because after realising with the help of my design teacher, I realised my intended flap for my design was unsuitable and unsuccessful. So I redesigned the flap to allow one way flow. Also another change I made was the material I used to simulate blood flow. Originally I wanted to use marbles because it was more effective with my design to allow one way flow. However I thought it was unrealistic and would confuse my target audience and changed it to rice. But then rice was too light weight which means my model couldn’t show one way flow. So in the end I changed to beans. In the video below, I will also explain other choices I made regarding to my model.

Design Day Term 1 Grade 10

Today I had design day in Gr. 10. Our design project is to create a model about how a heart valve works. Our design project is integrated with science. As in science we are learning about human body functions, specifically the heart. The first activity we did was to create a mind map (figure 1) about what we already know, what we want to know and how we find out with a group that our science teacher assigned. I thought that our group worked quite well together as we had one scribbler and the rest of us fed ideas and the scribbler jot down ideas. Then we had to label the hearts arteries, veins and chambers (figure 2). My key takeaway from that activity was that if a group worked well together, our works quality would be exceptional with time saved. However if we could do it again, I think I would be more focused because our team would go offtrack. Then we were given some materials, first we had to sketch what we would do with the materials provided to create an artificial heart valve. This was separate as at the end we would compare ideas and chose which one was the best. Then we were told to build the heart valve. Our first prototype didn’t work as the pressurize  didn’t work with paperclips. Then we used a different concept of representing a valve as we allowed the water to flow through the valve, however when we flipped the tube, a ping-pong ball stopped the water from flowing back into the tube. From that activity, I learned that it’s okay to fail that we we learn from our mistakes. Also, a productive team is essential for these kind of projects as the more hands and thinking power, the merrier. If I could do it again, I would get my group to be more focus as some of my team members (including me) were off task which wasted time that should have been devoted to creating the artificial heart valve. I used to think that a project should fulfill the requirements from the starting stage (planning) to the final product. However after this design project, I know now that it’s okay to fail as we learn from mistakes.

1. How does what I have learned help me understand the relevant of the SOI?

In this unit of business, we learned about ethics and how it relates to business. First of all, ethics is a behaviour of choice that is considered right in the general public. We have learned ethical and unethical behaviour that involves businesses, like lying to customers, that would be considered unethical, or treating waste disposal, that would be considered ethical. In this unit our SOI (Statement of Inquiry) was: Students understand that businesses interact in a global environment and are held accountable (ethics) by society for their actions. What we learned help me understand the relevant of the SOI because I know now that business can operate on a global scale, especially large companies like McDonalds, Gap, Apple and so forth operate globally, for example, Apple sources its manufactoring in China and they sell on a global scale. Gap produces their clothing in Bangladesh, China and Vietnam and also sell on a global scale and that unethical actions form businesses can be held accountable if the public finds out. For example, when Nike was exposed they used child labour in sweatshops, people were protesting and Nike was held accountable because of their action to make that decision.

2. How does what I have learned fit within the relevant global context?

Our global context of this unit is fairness and development. This relates to what I have learned because ethics can be based on fairness and that development can be achieved during a period of time that would make a business become more ethical. Fairness would be related to transparency, staff treatment, working conditions and the product quality because fairness would be the standard that people think would be reasonable enough to call it ethical. For example people would call sweatshops to be unethical because it is unfair to the workers that they have low pay and poor working conditions. Whereas people think that working in an office would be fair because workers would have decent pay to survive and not live in poverty and that working conditions are suitable. Development can also be tied with unfairness, because if the company is exposed to unethical behaviour, they would first be accountable then they would make changes from the problem so that the business public image would be more ethical which would be development

3. How does what I have learned help me answer the relevant questions?

The context of what I learned help me answer the relevant questions which are: “1. How does one determine if an action is ethical?” and “2. To what extent do businesses behave ethically?” For question 1, I think that the general public determines if an action is ethical or not because ethics is based on a collective group that share the same beliefs of whether an action is correct or incorrect. So in this case, the collective group would be the general public and that we would determine whether it is right or wrong. For question number 2, I think that some business would sacrifice money in order to obtain an ethical image, for example food products that are all-natural, because they would be more expensive to manufacture but would sustain an ethical image which would motivate people to buy their product.

4. Real world situations that helped me explain the content further,

For our real world situation, we did a project where we produced a monologue focusing on one company or brand, in my case it was Gap to explain whether the company is ethical or not. If it was in a real world situation, I think that companies can’t be determined whether a company is ethical or not because the business may do unethical things while at the same time trying to do ethical things. Or it could be that the company may seem ethical but it is hiding some information that could ruin the image of the companies reputation which makes them unethical. But for this project, I determined that Gap is ethical because although it used child labour and sweatshops in the pass, they have attempted to resolve these issues and that they do ethical things like introducing equal pay, reducing their carbon footprint and improving work conditions.

5. An updated diagram or mind map to show how the SOI, inquiry questions and topics fit together.

Design Cycle Reflection

Since this Design Cycle which we were tasked to create a graphic novel from a scene from the book “Empire of the Sun”. Empire of the Sun is a fictional book based on the authors events of World War 2. Anyway, since this design cycle, I learnt how to use more tools on Illustrator, one of the most crucial things I learned from the design cycle is using the pen tool because the pen tool can draw lines and can trace from my hand drawn draft of the graphic novel. Our design cycle unit question is how does the use of visuals help reinforce a particular message? So this project relates to the design cycle unit because the Empire of the Sun has a lot of complex issues and abstract thoughts that some readers can’t apprehend, so a graphic novel can help and aid them understand better of complex situations and thoughts because Empire of the Sun is a novel and is full of text and no pictures and so a graphic novel can illustrate them and that the human mind can comprehend more if it is in picture form rather then text form. Using visuals helps reinforce a particular message because visuals can have a variety of choices that can affect the readers thoughts. For example if a graphic novel was full of dark and dull shades of colors, then the reader would most likely understand better and get the full picture. I think that technology does facilitate the communication of ideas because now we have social media to spread out our ideas of communicating, we have iMovie and cameras that we can record which is another way of communicating, then there is animation that we can do either on paper or on computer and upload to the web which does change the way we communicate. I think that technology definitely facilitates communication because we now have so many different ways we can communicate that people can understand easily. If I were to do this project again, I would have managed my time better by creating a schedule throughout the whole project and look at a further outcome, because I don’t think I managed my time well and that was the main problem I faced when creating the whole design cycle project.

Chain of Production

Recently in my Intro to Business class, we started a new Unit of Inquiry which is Business Fundamentals, our new Statement of Inquiry (SOI) is: Understanding that businesses operate within a system whose structure is influenced by causality external factors. This helped me understand better of the SOI, first of all chain of production is the goods needed to produce a product in order to sell. For example, a car has a chain of production. First, the car needs metal for the body which is influenced from the car industry which is related to the SOI. The list of business can go on and on, for example the metal needed to produce a car can be influenced by the mining machines who also rely on natural resources and it can be one big giant complicated web where businesses affect other business. Our global context is identity and relationships, I think that what I learnt fits with Chain of Production because the Chain of Production is based on relationships, as I said before, businesses rely on each other which is relationships and identity is what the business do in order to demand supplies that other businesses rely. An example of a real life situation is for example a chocolate bar, the identity of the business is that it makes chocolate bars. Chocolate bars need ingredients such as butter and milk in order to make it. Therefore establishing relationships with other businesses in order to supply a product. Also there is the retailers that sells the product which benefits the chocolate bar business thereforeScreen Shot 2015-11-22 at 9.15.47 pm establishing relationships.

In business class, we learnt about competition, competition is basically two or more business aiming at the same goal and comparing with one another. This relates to the SOI (Statement of Inquiry) which is understanding that businesses operate within a system whose structure is influenced by (causality) external factors. For example, if a new competition emerges from a monopoly business, this can influence the business of how they operate or the profits that they make. Which the Statement of Inquiry exactly says. This also relates to the global context which is identities and relationships. Competition is a type of relationship between one another which shows it relates tot he global context and that that competition share the same or similar identity of a business which shows the relevance of the global context. For example, a real world example is if a chocolate bar has a monopoly, and a new competition emerges, a new relationship is established which is who can sell more chocolate bars or who can be the most efficient business which is their common identity which shows they are competitors. This also helps me connect with previous knowledge such as chain of production because if a new supplier shows up, the competitors can try tactics to lure customers or clients to buy their product or supply instead of the competitor, this can be achieved by lowering prices. This shows that the previous knowledge of chain of production relates to the knowledge of competition. Screen Shot 2015-11-22 at 10.10.28 pm

In business class, we recently learnt about economics, what we learnt about economics relates to our statement of inquiry(SOI) which is understanding that business operate within a system whose structure is influenced by casualty external factors. This is because what we learnt in economics is mostly about an economic shock. As you might not know about economic shock, it is generated by a unpredicted event whether it is positive or negative. This of course relates to the SOI because the SOI clearly states businesses are influenced by external factors, which again shows how it relates to economics. This has relevance with the global context which is Identities and Relationships, because the relationship through something/business or event can drastically or small changes in businesses whether it is from profit or to identity. For example, if a chocolate bar supply of butter gets cut off, this can drastically change the business of the chocolate bar and the business may think of changing its identity and making or producing something else. So what I previously learned is chain of production and entrepreneurship, this connects to economics and has relevance to the SOI because in chain of production, it is all about relationships, and because of these relationships, this can have unpredicted events which can turn into an economic shock. Also this relates to entrepreneurship because entrepreneur has to rely on other businesses to supply or rely on goods and this creates relationships which can lead to unpredicted events which can lead to economic shocks. Screen Shot 2015-11-22 at 9.42.32 pm

Design Day T1 2015-2016

Today in design day, we started a new design cycle about English. Our goal was to create a graphic novel for a book called Empire of The Sun. The challenge was tois to interpret a scene from the book Empire of the Sun in visual form as a graphic novel. It should be original, visually appealing, add visual depth to the scene which you are representing and should implement graphic novel conventions effectively.  In order to create the graphic novel, we had to learn how to draw in Adobe Illustrator. Today I learned how to draw straight and curved lines. This can help me with my drawings of the graphic novels because the graphic novel is required to be electronic and using apps. Which Illustrator is the most recommended. I also learned how to use EverNote so I could show my progress to my teachers of how I progress my graphic novel. In the picture below, it showed what I did in Illustrator.

Types of Organization

Recently in business, we learnt that there are types of organisations and associations that companies cooperate with each other in order to benefit from one another. This helps me understand the statement of inquiry which is to understand that entrepreneurs must innovate inorder to remain competitive over time. This helps me learn more because it shows that businesses can work with one another to benefit from each other and to innovate with each other cause normally organisations would share information will one another and would inform business laws that would apply to them. This helps me further understand the global context which is orientation in space and time because at first business tend to compete with each other but over time, new business methods are accepted such as an alliance or organisation that helps one another to survive. This connects to the SOI because business can help one another to innovate and help each other which relates to the SOI. For example, before in the 1800s, very few organisations were formed because businesses competed with each other and their mindset was very competitive but now organisations are now in every industry which shows people are adopting new methods of businesses.Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 9.52.22 pm

Invention and Innovation

In business class we learned the difference between invention and innovation. An invention is an entirely new idea and an innovation is based on an idea but changes and alters the idea to make it better. This has helped me understand the Statement of Inquiry more which is to Understand that entrepreneurs must innovate in order to remain competitive over time, from the knowledge I learned, I learnt that time plays a key role in businesses because one entrepreneur can innovate from one idea and another entrepreneur can innovate from that idea with new technology. Also this fits in to global context which is Orientation in Space and Time because I like I said before, someone can innovate an idea based on new technology or new industries based on time which is a very influential factor for businesses. This has helped me understand further of the SOI because the fundamentals of businesses is change so over time, new ideas emerge and changes can happen. An example would be that dyson has innovated from vacuums and produced a vacuum that is silent and is portable which shows they have innovated with new technology. Screen Shot 2015-10-05 at 9.52.22 pm

In business we learned about industries, industries are economical activities concerning on the materials used and classifying businesses based on what they sell or what services do they provide. So this helped me further understand the Statement of Inquiry which is Understanding that entrepreneurs must innovate in order to remain competitive over time because industries can be created or changed based on time, for example 50 years ago, the smartphone industry wasn’t created until the 1990s when cellphones could do more then a normal cell phone. Like I said from the SOI, orientation in space and time can change industries or create new ones because of new technology invented which fills in new wants from the public. This helped me enrich the SOI because it would help me understand that time is a key factor for businesses and that when changing time can alter businesses and their identity. For example Apple changed its identity from Apple Computers to just Apple because they decided they should focus of MP3 players and the iTouch which was a huge success, this was because of new technology created that changed their company identity.

Recently in business class, we learned what an entrepreneur is and the attributes and attitudes that would help entrepreneurs succeed. First an entrepreneur is a person who sets up a person and takes risks in order to hopefully gain profit from that business. Normally entrepreneurs are driven because they want to innovate products or they want to be free and work for themselves or they want to have the need of achieving something. We learnt that being an entrepreneur requires attitudes that not everyone is comfortable. For example, entrepreneurs need to be perseverant and not to give up so that when they fail, they can be positive and try to figure out why they failed and restart their business and learn from the failures. Another attitude they need is ambiguity which means making decisions and being comfortable with unknown situations. For example, when going to an industry or market, entrepreneurs tend to have no market research done or tend not to have a clear picture of the industry they are going to. That’s why this attitude is important so they are comfortable of taking risk. There are a whole lot of other attitudes and attributes that entrepreneurs need in order to increase their chance of being successful. This helps me understand the statement of inquiry(SOI) better which is Understand that entrepreneurs must innovate in order to remain competitive over time, I learnt that entrepreneurs need to bring something new to the market, to introduce change so that clients/consumers can be attracted to the new change and hopefully, clients would like the change and that would introduce a monopoly to the entrepreneur. This helps me understand the SOI because in the SOI, it says entrepreneurs must innovate, which is directly related to the SOI because it clearly says entrepreneurs need to make somethings change. This also relates the global context which is orientation in space and time because over time, entrepreneurs gain ideas from ideas which is innovation and the innovation that one entrepreneur got can be innovated from another entrepreneur and that overtime, the market can change dramatically because of innovations drawn from entrepreneurs. Our inquiry questions are “Are the traits that are needed  to be successful as an entrepreneur always the same?” After learning about entrepreneurs, I think that the traits thats are needed to be successful as an entrepreneur would not change, because I think the traits used in the past centuries still apply the same attitudes. For example, creativity, perseverance would still be applied in the 1900s except the technology was different. Entrepreneurs would innovate from past ideas like the steam engine and invent something like the car. Or from the radio to the television. So I think the traits used to be a successful entrepreneur still stayed the same. I think that this helped me understand previous context like innovation and invention because entrepreneurs need to have new ideas which is innovation and that inventions are harder to come up with and harder to be successful at for becoming a profit because innovation is that there is already a market and that if it was successful, you would innovate because the entrepreneur sees how well businesses are doing but inventions could be a new area in the market and that more risks are needed but if it is successful, it would gain a whole monopoly if clients like the new invention.  An example of entrepreneurship is all these big companies. One example is Steve Jobs, he started as an entrepreneur and that he innovated the smartphone to create the iPod and iPhone which was his biggest success. Screen Shot 2015-09-30 at 8.49.12 am

Starting a Business

Starting a business requires a few things in order to start. First entrepreneurs need a motivation or a reason why they would like to start a business. Those motivations can range from freedom meaning they would like to work only for themselves to just being motivated to sell something. But not only do you need a motive to start, you need skills to run the business like creativity, decision making, perseverance  and other skills in order to be an entrepreneur. This relates to the statement of inquiry which understand that entrepreneurs must innovate in order to remain competitive over time because in order to be an entrepreneur, you need to have a set of skills and attitudes in order to successfully start a business perseverant to get back on their feet and try something new and to innovate. This also relates to the global context which is orientation in space and time because being an entrepreneur, you need to change your style or your way of thinking in order to attract consumers which could change over time. This helps me connect to what I’ve learned to understand the SOI more because I learnt that stating a business, you need the right attitude and skill which relates the SOI and relates to starting a business because starting a business require s the right skills and attitudes which also relates to the SOI as I mentioned before. An example of this is that when Steve Jobs failed at selling the MessagePad 2000 which way an earlier prototype of the iPad, he stuck with the idea of the MessagePad and introduced the iTouch and then the iPad.

Needs and Wants

A need is a vital good or object or thing that is crucial in order to survive, this includes clothes, warmth, food shelter and water. A want is a desire to possess or do that is not essential for surviving. This helps me understand more about the state of inquiry (SOI) which is understand that entrepreneurs must innovate in order to remain competitive over time. This relates to the SOI because entrepreneurs or businesses need to respond to the community/societies needs and wants so that they can consume what they want and the business or entrepreneur can make a profit and do business. This is relevant to the global context because as time changes, the world and its society changes with its different points and views and different economical status and different products. For example before about 20 years ago, a want would be so much different then the present day. One example would be 20 years ago kids would have wanted a toy but now, kids want a smartphone or a tablet. This relates because as time changes, the needs and wants change too. This enriches my understanding of the SOI because businesses need to change things and that includes needs and wants to sell to the public and to innovate the public and to revolutionise the technology and products so you can attract customers and make them interested in buying your product. An example of this is fashion, before in the 1990s, baggy jeans are the trend but now skinny jeans are the new trend which shows that even a need such as clothing would change over time.

Here’s a diagram of the connections made:

What is Business?

What is a business? A business is an organisation involved with trading goods and services  to consumers and make decisions in order to become successful such as generating profit. In Grade 9, I am starting a new course which is called Intro to Business and it is all about how do businesses work. Our statement of inquiry is understand that entrepreneurs must innovate in order to remain competitive over time. How this topic relates to the statement of inquiry (SOI) is that entrepreneurs start businesses so in order to start a business, you need something unique or special which is innovation in order to attract consumers which are buyers to buy whatever you are selling whether it is goods or a service. How this relates to the global context which is orientation in time and space is that businesses change over time and that in order for entrepreneurs to stay on top of their game, they need to change or innovate with new ideas and products in order to keep attracting consumers which also connects to the SOI. An example is Apple. When the iTouch came out it was the revolutionary product of its time. Now Samsung and Apple are innovating the smartphone world with new features coming out every year so that they keep innovating and still attract consumers.

Design Packaging

So recently I’ve created a package for CDNIS coffee tumblr. Sorry I haven’t painted it yet but the other picture will show what it would look like with the design on the package. I think my target audience is adults because they primarilly drink coffee so this product suits them. Anyway there is a link to a survey and I would like to know what you think about it and your response. Thanks!IMG_4392

ATL-Design Day

In todays Design Day, I think that my participation was good in general, I did participate in coming up with ideas when my group was planning to make the box for the apple. But I think I can improve by asking more questions or participating more  in group discussion as a whole grade. But I think that overall my participation is good. For Collaboration, I think I would be in the excellent category because I think my group worked well with each other when creating the apple package. I think that my effort was good, I did most of the task that were required to be finished. For time management, I think I am in the good category because I was able to finish most of the task on time, especially with the apple package with my group. But what I can improve mostly is participating in group discussions.

Waste Not, Want Not (Google Sketchup)

This is our second task of design day, we went on the app Google Sketchup and created a package for an apple. The point of this task was to learn the basics of Google Sketchup and to improve our skills. I made a cube shaped box, I learned how to create a 2D TO 3D object. For example, I can make a rectangle into a rectangular prism. Also I learned how to put measurements so that the box can be very precise when printed because our main design project is to create a package. Another thing I learned about Sketchup is that I can make rectangles and remove them to create holes. I think this is a useful tool if you are creating a handle for the person to hold or to make it more portable. But what I would like to learn in the future is to create wording cause if I can put wording, I can show people where to open or add decorative features to the box.

Waste Not, Want Not

IMG_3928Today is our second design day, we did a challenge, which was to create a package for an apple, of course this is a draft and not professional and is just an activity but it is practice for our design project which is to create a package. We were judged on attractiveness, durability and accessibility.  I think that my group was successful in accessibility and convinience because we had a handle which would be easy to carry. But the handle was in the way of the apple’s accessibility . We had a simple design on the front of the cover, I think if we had more time, we would have decorated the sides of the package. Also I think we could have improved with durability because the handle is not reliable, it is only taped along the sides of the box. Also the whole box was taped so it shows that it is not durable to hold the apple. But ovIMG_3929erall I think that we were great with accessibility but could improve with attractiveness and durability.

Invitation to My Groups iBook for Gr. 5-6

When I was young, I enjoyed reading science books that have a lot of illustration and easy to understand the main idea or concept that I will learn from. Features like definitions from words that are more advance in the english vocabulary and with more pictures which may not be found in adult books is what I would like to read when I was young. The features would make the audience understand more especially with a younger audience. Some of the things that make the book interesting is to have more pictures, make it more interactive so the audience can do something else then reading. If the text is explaining an complex idea or conspiracy, I think that the author should have a vocabulary on the side of the page to define some advanced vocabulary for younger audience to fully understand the text. The reason why I’m explaining this is because in science, me my team consisting of two other people will create an iBook (electronic book) on a disease therefore inviting the Gr. 5-6 to read my iBook. Trying to make my iBook interesting and appealing and trying to make Gr.5-6 understand a disease.

My Best Digital Work

I think that my best digital work in this year is the final book jacket for English, because I put so much effort into this project and I had some many drafts and I’m proud to accomplish my book jacket. Also I learned how to use Photoshop and I gained more skills.

CAS Week Experiments

Last week I went on my CAS week trips (Community Action Service). I might have mentioned it on one of my posts. But for those people who don’t know what CAS week is, CAS week is where my school hosts trips for Upper School and you get a choice of going to different locations for a week. This year in Gr.7, we had a choice of going to Inner Mongolia, Taiwan and Thailand. I chose Inner Mongolia, Inner Mongolia is not Mongolia, it is a state region in China, the reason why it was called Inner Mongolia is because the main reason is that there are a lot of Mongols (Mongolians) in this region, and this is where Mongolians mix with Chinese. We went their for 6 days total, 5 days in Inner Mongolia and 1 day in Beijing, because there was no direct flight to Chifeng (the city we went to), so we had to go to Beijing, and transfer to Chifeng.

On day 1, it was mostly traveling, first a flight from Hong Kong to Beijing, then transfer from Beijing to Chifeng. One of the challenge I faced on that day was the delay of the flight from Hong Kong – Beijing, so we had to rush for the transfer flight. Our accommodation was a hotel, it was quite nice, had hot water and it was much better then I thought.

On day 2, we went to a local school, it wasn’t a ordinary local school, it was a school for gifted children and for those that are really talented, we were separated into 3 groups and each had their own activity. But we didn’t had the chance to do all. For us, we painted masks, one of the challenges we had was painting the mask and not smudging it into other colors, that would make the paint job sloppy. I forgot to mention, we had our guides who were part of a group called The Hutong, our guides were all from different places, one of them was from Estonia! II didn’t even know that country even existed. But anyway after the school activities, we went up hiking on a mountain. On top there was a buddhist statue, it looked very pretty. At the top, you could see the city skyline. At the bottom, you could see the statue clearly because of the white marble they used to carve it. The challenge I faced was that we had to walk a lot plus I had a terrible headache, so it just sort of bothered me. In Inner Mongolia, the weather is really cold compared to Hong Kong, like at night it’s around below 10˚c which would be equivalent to the coldest winter night in HK.

The 3rd day, we had a scavenger hunt in a city called Wudan, that means that we set off on the highway which was about 2 hours drive. One thing I found quite weird about the locals is when we drive past them on a tour bus or stand and huddle on the street or walk on the street, they would stare at us for while, some would take pictures, some would follow us like some sort of celebrity, anyway when we went to the Wudan scavenger hunt, it wasn’t really a scavenger hunt but it was interesting, we tried some local dumplings. We looked for some specific things and sketched it on our hand books that the Hutong gave us. After we went to the YuLong dessert, we had different activities, we first hiked up a sand dune, one of the challenges I faced was going up the sand dune because the slopes were really steep so when you go up, your shoe kind of sinks in to the sand. Also there was wind blowing, like not a breeze but a gust of wind blowing, and it practically lift the sand up and you could see the sand moving with the wind. Also had to put on my mouth cloth so that sand doesn’t get in  my mouth and nose and eyes. After the hike we had a camel ride. I didn’t face any challenges while riding the camel and I thought it was really fun. We also did a couple more activities but those two was the most fun activities we had. After that, we went to our home stays, we faced some challenges in the home stays, like our home stay, we had no toilet, so we had to just go outside. Also we had to sleep on concrete slabs with thin mattresses, also we had to share one bed with four people. But the bed was quite big so we had our personal space. I had trouble sleeping, and then my partner I shared my bed with, he woke me up for no reason I was really angry at him because it was really hard trying to fall asleep. But the food they served us was excellent. Most of the food was excellent when we ate, we tried different things and the local food and it was mostly good.

On day 4, we left our home stays and went to the grasslands, our highlight was staying at the yurts. We had to take a 4 hour drive to a lake, we had a photo challenge, one of the challenges I faced was my camera had low battery and it would occasionally die and restart again, so I have to off the camera for about 1 minute and turn it on and take a picture really fast before it dies. But in the end, it worked out ok. We then visited a wind power plant, it was really windy and cold and I think I had 1st degree frostbite. Then we left for our yurts, at night we had a bon fire party, then we headed back to the yurts. This time we had a toilet but no shower so we didn’t shower for 2 days and there was no hot water. Inside the yurts, it was really cold.

On day 5, we did archery, folk dancing, wrestling and whip making at the yurt camps, I didn’t really faced challenges on this day, we went back to Chifeng to catch our flight to Beijing, the bus ride took 4 hours. We stayed at a hotel and tank god they had hot water so I can shower.

The last day we went back to Hong Kong, I thought this trip was really fun and I learned a lot in this trip.

My Trip Compared To A Novel

Today is our first day after our CAS week ( Community Action Service ). Every year we get to choose a destination from three places. I chose Inner Mongolia, for those who don’t know what or where Inner Mongolia is. Inner Mongolia is a state in China, it’s where the Mongols/Mongolians meet with the Chinese. So today we were in English talking about the challenges we had, the benefits/highlights we had and the difference of the lifestyle we had compare to Hong Kong and wherever we went. In English class we recently read about a book called The “Other Side of Truth” which was written by Beverly Naidoo.. It’s about a family in Nigeria and has to leave their home country because of political problems. Anyhow the reason why we were explaining the things I just listed about our CAS week trips is because this book talks about the differences and the expectations that the character has to overcome.

In the book, people discriminate her (Sade and her brother Femi) when she moved to London all because of her skin colour, people might think she is poor when she was asking someone how to get to her destination. Or people might think she might steal- that kind of impression. In my trip to Inner Mongolia, I experienced a similar issue, like when we were walking down the streets in a big group, people will stop and stare, they might take pictures or whisper to someone, all because we are different. Part of the reason why is that the place we went which was ChiFeng wasn’t use to see tourist. Especially a group of young tourists walking down the street. Even a family went up to my teacher (which was Canadian) and took a picture with him all because he looked different.

Another thing that the characters had to go through is the expectation, when she was in Nigeria, the school teachers were very strict and the students were well disciplined. While the students in the United Kingdom were more loose and the teachers tried to discipline their children but just couldn’t. A similar thing happened to me in my trip when the locals tried to talk as much simple Mandarin as they could. But the fact that most of us could already speak fluent Mandarin. Well fluent I mean as keeping or hosting a conversation with minor grammar mistakes.

Another experience that was similar to Sade and Femi was the difference in the environment. Like in Sade and Femi, when they moved to London, the streets were very different then Nigeria’s city Lagos. In Lagos the streets were crowded with street markets, side walk restaurants and etc. While in London, the streets were dark at night, the weather was mostly cloudy and the buildings were mostly in rows like products lining on shelves in the super market. In Inner Mongolia, the environment was very different, in the city there weren’t a lot of cars compared to Hong Kong. Not very tall buildings, in fact rarely any skyscrapers. Outside of town, if you drive for just one hour, the scenery might start with farms, then later it could change to grasslands, then it could change to dessert. What I mean is that if you drive for just a short amount of time, you could see different biomes rather then in Hong Kong, all you could see was skyscrapers everywhere.

Design Day #2

Today I have another Design Day, as you may recall I had a Design Day in the fall of last year and it was about english. This time, it’s about Humanities

and our project is to make a document about a historical Hong Kong building. But for design day, we were required to make a short video to save our school. In this fake scenario, the MTR ( Mass Transit Railway ) condemned this school because the rail was blocking the new line which was under construction.  So we needed to film a short documentary to save part of our school and why we should keep it. My group did a nature documentary as referring that the students and teachers are rare specimens. One of my strengths is being cooperative. What makes my video a great video is that the voice and background is mostly clear. You can mostly hear what the documentary is saying. Although what we could improve is the camera and the shooting, because the teachers ran out of portable cameras, we had to use our computers so some parts of the video, the shooting was that good. But overall, I think our group did a pretty good job under the time limits including the video time limit, because we had to make our video a or under a minute, it was quite troublesome because our original video was 1:27 long. But with editing, we shorted it down to 1:00, just under the limit.

If you want to see the video copy and paste the link:

Goals For Term 2 and Term 1 Results

Today in TAP Class ( Teacher Advisory Program ), we have got our term 1 report card results and what our goals are for the next term. For math, I was satisfied with my score but I could improve, my result was more then a pass but less then full marks or almost full marks. So I could improve my scores by getting a higher mark by going to the teacher’s session where they offer help. Another reason why I didn’t get full marks is because on the last unit, it was my weakness point and I didn’t really understand all of the information.

In Humanities, I got almost full marks. I’m satisfied with my scores but just with one point, I could’ve got full marks. At the same time I was disappointed because I was just a bit away from getting full marks. So now all I need to do is to work a little harder and get full marks.

For English, I got the same mark as Humanities, and again I was very close for getting full marks so my goal is to get full marks on the next term.

For Chinese I got more then a pass, but I’m not satisfied with my scores because I know I can do better with this subject and is just that I didn’t really focus and pay attention in class. So my goal is to study more and pay attention.

For French, I also got the same score as Humanities and English, I was satisfied with my scores but disappointed yet agaIn because I was so close of having full marks. But yet at the same time, I was happy with myself. So for all the subjects I got the same mark as Humanities, English and French, I need to work harder in order to get full marks.

For Art, I also got the same score as Humanities, French and English. I am satisfied with my scores. But I need to wait for next year for a new term in art because in Gr. 7, after one term. The Gr. 8s and us switch subjects, so they will have art in term 2 and we will have drama. My goal is to work harder, commit more to the class.

For P.E, I got more then a pass but less then the marks I had for Art, English and etc. I was satisfied with my scores because my score was more then a pass. But I could work on my reflections is P.E because that is my weakness and I need to improve on that in order to get a higher mark.

For Music I got a pass, I wasn’t satisfied with my scores because I knew I could do better, the criteria that really brought me down is reflecting, because sometimes, I didn’t handed my reflections in time so that was the main reason why I got a low grade. But my application and playing saved me for not failing this subject so I need to be more organise and be more reflective.

For Science, I got a pass, I wasn’t satisfied with my scores because I only had a pass. My knowledge and Understanding was weak so that’s why my grades dropped. I know my weaknesses and I need to improve in those areas. I need to work harder and I need to go to the revision sessions with my teacher if I don’t understand something in class. Overall, I’m not satisfied with my scores because I know I can do better to reach Honor Roll ( you need to get more then a pass except with one exception ) and that is my goal for my overall scores.

Polygon Area Assessment

This week, we had a summative assessment on polygons and finding out the area, it was judging on our investigation strategies. I didn’t do well as I was expected because my strategies were not as good. Overall I think the assessment was quite challenging because my strengths are not investigating. In the future, I should use the strategy that my teacher gave me in order to gain higher points. Also I think I need to come up with new strategies in order to be successful at it. The reason why is when you investigate patterns, you can’t really study for the test. So in order to be successful I need to work on my strategies.

YOTH Reflection

I did enjoy participating in the CNY concert because it was a really fun and exciting experiment. I thought that actually performing on stage was the best part out of the whole experiment because the whole of Gr.  7 is participating and it brings a certain togetherness energy on that stage. Although there were some parts we could improve like looking at the conductor and seeing when to stop playing the repeats because I had to remind the people beside me to look at the conductor. But either then that it was really good, the concert I think is the best is the last one ( we had three concerts to play ) because that was the most fluent and almost everyone stopped when they had to stop while doing the repeats. Also almost everything was running smoothly.

I did recognize personal growth, recently I’ve practiced more on the clarinet because I couldn’t reach the high notes quickly or if I reached it quickly, I couldn’t or the sound will be very bad. Plus I had to work on playing fluently and try to make tonging seem casual because right now, I seem to have a problem with that and I don’t feel comfortable. Ending I did reach my goal and I am proud of myself. Also when the performance dates were near, I practiced almost every day for about 30 minutes to an hour. So this really has been growth of personal engagement.

What I’ve Learned In Music Class

In the past eight weeks in music class, I’ve learned how to compose blues music, learn how to play blues music and understand the notes that go well together with another chord called chords. Even though I had some prior knowledge by taking theory exams, I still learned more music understanding then before. I also learned that playing music not just mean playing one part, it also mean that you can add more parts and not play at the same time. I learnt it by listening to blues music, composing blues music and playing music. I enjoyed listening to blues music because it’s so relaxing and I love how they play it in a swinging tempo, it gives that old time feeling and it just feels relaxing. I enjoy playing the music the most, especially doing the solo because the spotlight is on me so it gives me that moment to shine. I did listen to blues music since the beginning because when I do my work, I normally listen to blues music to relax me and make me less stress out. I enjoyed playing in a band because it just gives a sense of togetherness and I get to feel how it feels like to play in a real band. The piece that my class played in the band was Wild Card and Blues Down Under, I liked both of them because the melody is so smooth and relaxing, and also the fact that different instruments played different notes at the same time and it sounds so good. I also like Wild Card because it also has different parts for different instruments. I didn’t talk about blues music to my friends or parents because my parents have no interest with music and me and my friends usually not talk about school work. The best part of music class is when we play Wild Card or Blues Down Under because I love playing and listening to blues at the same time.

Science Classification Quiz

Now in science, we are learning about organisms and species and how scientist classify them using the language Latin. So we just had a quiz and I’m satisfied but I could do better. Ways I could improve if I did another test is to make sure I study the right thing and jot down more notes. I think that was the main reason I only got a satisfied score. Also I should jot my notes faster and be more organised. Also I should clarify with my friend on what to study because I didn’t study all the things that were in the test. So I think next time I should do that.

Blue Reflection

Today, in music, we had a blues music unit, we had a test on playing blues unit with the instrument, I chose the clarinet, I faced some difficulties with the fingering because when you have a fast tempo, you need accurate fingering and you need to cover the holes for a higher quality sound. So I practiced almost everyday for 30 minutes and so that’s how I improved my fingering. I think I got a pretty good grade for the first try, but I think I can do better because I’ve been practicing the clarinet for almost 1-2 years so I think that next time, I should get a higher grade and should challenge myself. So my goal is to have better skills for the clarinet, also the key to success is the fingering, you need precise and accurate fingering in order for higher sound quality and for better skill.

Bubl Us

Hi guys,

So today I found this really interesting tool called bubl us, Bubl us is like a tool to create mind maps, it can be used while you are doing your prior knowledge, or when you want to organize your information. Here is a brainstorm of why Bubl Us is useful.

Mythical Creature

Hi guys!

So today we have this assignment to create a mythical creature or a object that could be real in the future. My mythical creature is called LifeBot. This robot can communicate with you, also this robot can clean your house, do cooking, store valuable things in ( your savings, precious diamonds and etc ). This robot can be assign to almost anything you want in daily life! This robot can affect mankind by saving cost, this robot cost less then a helper. Although this robot needs a checkup every month so that means you can save money but then there is more risks.

The Exhibition

Hi guys!

During the past six weeks, we have been working on the PYP Exhibition. The PYP exhibition is like a final summative assessment for primary years and since next year I’ll be moving to Grade 7 which is a whole new different system called the MYP which stands for middle years program. So anyway at first I thought that the exhibition would be just choosing a area of focus and just research and then share your information. But actually there was more to it like coming up with your central idea, lines of inquiry and other things like that. Just to let you know, a line of inquiry or a central idea is a guide line to your investigation. So anyway in the exhibition we have to follow the inquiry cycle which is tuning in which means like a introduction. Then comes the finding out stage which basically means research. Then after that is the sorting out stage which is sorting your information. For example like throwing away the information that you don’t need and keeping the good stuff. Then after is the going further stage which means like you research more when you don’t have enough info because you sorted out your information. Then you would think, hey I don’t have enough information about this area so I need to go further. The sorting out stage and the going further stage can repeat in the process. Finally there is the drawing conclusion stage which means like coming up with a answer. Then afterwards is taking action which does not mean action as in the movie action! It means like taking a step further and doing something about it not just like when you finish it, it’s over. I think that this cycle really helpt me with the process of the exhibition and also I think this is like a really good process for this type of investigation in the exhibition.( By the way, I’m doing colonization ) So for the first few weeks, I started researching with my group. In the exhibition,  each team member has his or her own research to do. For me in colonization, each of my team member has a different place to do. I chose South Africa because I wanted to learn more about Africa, all the other continents, I know a bit of information, but for South Africa, I know nothing. My other team mates did Hong Kong, North America and Australia. Each team member has one area to research. After that we started sorting out our information, I actually thew away a lot of information. Ending up, I had to go further for a long time. Then we started planning our booth, we needed to complete everything in 5 days which was really a challenge because we wasted so much time just printing, after that most of the papers were in the recycling bin because we didn’t plan properly. But ending up we finished in time! But if I had done the exhibition again, I wish I’ve planned everything first and used my time more wisely because then I wouldn’t be very stressed at the last minute. When it was the night of the exhibition, I thought it really went well because I knew my information and I kept talking and talking, I just enjoyed myself. Overall, I think the exhibition was a really fun and interesting project and it was really exciting!

March Reflection

Hi guys,

This week I started my PYP exhibition! The PYP exhibition is kind of like a finale exam for the PYP. Basically you have to choose a area to research from a list that our teachers gave us and we have to select the top three you want to research. I chose colonization because I haven’t studied this before and I think it will quite interesting to try something new. Anyway what I’m worrying about is that we only have 12 days to complete it. That means done all your research, set up your both and be ready to present. So far I’ve done some research, my group has chosen our lines of inquiry, that means guide lines for our research. So anyway so far so good!

January Reflection Of The Week

Hi guys!

Sorry I haven’t posted new blog post because last week was our winter break. I didn’t go anywhere so I just stayed in Hong Kong which was quite boring. This week we watched a percussionist and his name was Steve Stiler. He is from Australia and ever since he was young, he loved music. I really like to watch him because he is really good. I think he played the drums the best because his combination of the drums work really well and his hand and legs were moving really fast. Plus there was this guitar playing from the stereo and it was really nice. This week we started our new unit called Where We Are In Place And Time. For short WWAIPT. For this unit, it isn’t an ordinary unit because the students have to come up with a central idea. But we haven’t done that so all we have is a theme. The concepts and attributes, we have to come up ourselves. So at first it won’t really make sense but then when we have our central idea and concepts and everything, it will make more sense. Also that reminds me about the exhibition of the PYP. I’m still thinking what topic I should do and also how are we going to organize the groups so that is kind of stressing me out. Anyway, this week we have to do this task where we have to cut out an article of a newspaper which has to relate to the theme. Which is An Inquiry Into Orientation In Place And Time, Personal History, Homes And Journeys, The Discoveries Of Exploration And The Migration Of Human Mankind. Then we have to write a summary of the article that you have chosen and then you have to explain how does the article that you have chosen relate to the theme.

Camp Reflection

Hi guys, I haven’t updated my blog for a while and I’m sorry about that. Last week the whole Gr. 6 went to camp to Zhao Qing. Zhao Qing is a city in China, it’s famous for the nine dragon rocks. In chinese it’s pronounce jiu long she. ( 九龍石 )So anyway we stayed there from last Wednesday to Friday. In order to get to our hotel, we had to travel a small boat to our hotel. Our hotel is near a lake and it’s not one of those 5 star hotels. We did a lot of fun activities like cableway hike, scavenger hunt, ink stone carving etc. My favorite activity was the scavenger hunt. We had to answer a bunch of questions of the scenery of the park which where we did it. Also they handed us a bunch of pictures of different items in the park and they said we had to take a replica of the picture. Also my group won and we got a prize which I’m not going to tell you. Just joking! It was a water bag. It’s a waterproof bag that can keep your things dry when you’re in the water. Anyway check next weeks update.
