Grade 5 Camp

by 053569 on May 25, 2012

Analogy: a comparison between two things, typically on the basis of their structure and for the purpose of explanation or clarification.

For reflections on camp, Mr. Brown asked us to do analogies, and compare camp to a similar thing. Here is my analogy:

Grade 5 Camp vs Dinner

I think that Grade 5 camp was like eating dinner, because there’s the curiosity of what you’re going to get. Then once you find out, then you wait to go to camp, sort of how you wait to be seated. Then, you wait for the activities to arrive, and then, after everyone is seated, you can finally dig in. There are the parts you don’t like, like vegetables, and there are the parts you love, like dessert.

There was a list of what you got to do, sort of how you get a menu of what you’re get to eat at a restaurant. Then afterwards, you say your goodbyes, like if you’re eating over at someone’s house.

Then there’s also the meeting new people part, like if you go for a meeting over dinner. The group leaders also need to organize everything, and plan everything out before, just like dinner. In fact, camp is almost the same as eating dinner, because you enjoy camp, and you enjoy dinner.

Le French May

by 053569 on May 20, 2012

On the 18th of May, we had our French May project. Our group decided to do ” Les recettes” or recipes. We made chocolate mousse, or chocolat mousse, salad or salade, and vanilla crepes, or crepes vanille. We put them out on small paper plates to serve to the visitors. We also had a quiz for visitors to do, and if they did the quiz, then they got to taste a small amount of french chocolate. I have to give credit to my mom, though, as she helped us get utensils when we were running low, she helped us set up, and she also helped us carry things up and down the stairs. I do not think that we would have done things as well without her. Also, Madame Lum helped us with editing and with what to put on the poster, so credit goes to her as well. I really enjoyed the French May!!!

The 5E Human Body Quiz!!!

by 053569 on May 19, 2012

Since we have started our ” Who We Are” unit, on changes that happen in the human body, factors that cause those changes, and actions that can affect personal well- being, Mr. Brown decided to do a 5E human body quiz. We had to make 6-7 questions that were based on our lines of inquiry. I worked with my partner to make lots of different questions. A few of them were:

- What is the name of the gland/ organ in the female body which produces the hormones?

-What is the name of the master gland located in the brain which controls all the hormone producing?

-What is the genetic reason for which a girl does not go through the changes of puberty?

We had 4 rounds each consisting of 10 questions, and 1 round consisting of 9 questions. In the middle of each round, there was a speed round in which we were made to answer questions in 1/2 minutes. In the end, the team called “Deathstar” won, with very close results (photo below from Mr. Brown’s blog):

I really enjoyed the challenge, and I liked answering the questions too. I hope that we do this again!!!

My Personal Inquiry

by 053569 on May 8, 2012

This is my Sharing the Planet personal inquiry. If you cannot view it here, click here. We had to ask a question, and research about it, basing it on the Philippines. My question was: Why aren’t the children in Philippines rights still not equal? I wrote my answers down, and decided to present it as a book.

Here are the stages of the inquiry cycle:

1. Asking questions

2. Selecting resources

3. Recording information

4. Synthesizing information to create new knowledge and understanding

5. Presenting

6. Reflecting on learning

I found researching quite easy, though all the sites seemed to give a similar answer, and the answer wasn’t detailed enough. The presenting was probably the easiest thing to do, as I almost always find presenting my information the easiest thing during the process. I want to improve on my reflecting skills, and my synthesizing skills. I hope that I will be able to use my new knowledge in the future.

Note: I’m sorry if you cannot see the commas and fullstops, as this is a different kind of font!

A Photo A Day- Big Belly

by 053569 on May 7, 2012

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=12045048

The Lake Michigan waterfront is filled with tourists every year. But one of the worst things is the garbage. Beaches do get dirty sometimes. And garbage attracts gulls. The gulls are a huge problem. Their droppings make the E.coli levels in the water high, and no one can swim in the water. When the city tried plastic bins with lids, the lids would blow off, and people didn’t really close the lids.

So the city decided to try Big Belly Solar’s solar- powered trash compacter. The compacter presses the trash down to make more room. The Big Bellies are enclosed, so there’s no danger of the bins overflowing. That stops the problem of having trash everywhere and hopefully, will stop the problem of gulls.

The Big Bellies are easy to use. They look like mailboxes, and they have solar panels on the top. The park saves money by having less trucks coming. Jim Poss invented the Big Belly. When he saw the overflowing garbage cans, he had a sudden inspiration. On the beaches, there is more than enough sunlight to power the Big Belly. This is a great way to solve the city’s trash problem.

I think this shows CHANGE, as it shows how human technology can innovate and develop, and helps change things for the better. I also think it shows FUNCTION, as it shows how the Big Belly functions, and how it actually works.

Our unit was on Children’s Rights. This is one of my summative tasks. We were asked to make a PSA (Public Service Announcement). We had to choose a right and create a script and storyboard for our PSA. I chose the right: We have the right to be protected from kidnapping. The purpose of this is to inform people about our chosen right, and how it is being denied/ supported. Please enjoy, and leave a comment if you like it!!! Oh and by the way, I rushed through this (finished the filming in half an hour!) as I missed out on a full two days (one day because I was sick, and another on the china trip…)!

My Closing Statement

by 053569 on April 19, 2012

Today, during my Student Led Learning Review, I shared my learning with my mom. I showed her my Finale files (Performing Arts), How to play the Game of 31 (math), how to do a proper badminton serve (P.E.) and a presentation (french). I also showed her stuff I did for the subjects chinese, technology, UOI, and art. I thought that we were doing well, but then I realized I only had 10 minutes left and I still had 3 or 4 subjects left to show! I started rushing through those things then, to cram it all in. However, that really wasn’t the best idea, because I should have explained things better to my mum, and she would have seen my learning better if I had maybe skipped some of those things.

The most important thing I wanted my mom to notice about my learning was how I am improving and what I can do better next time. I hope that next time, I do even better and my mom learns more than she did this time.

BBB- Education for Girls

by 053569 on March 29, 2012

Gender equality is a big issue, not only in India, but in many other developing countries. The problem is that many people think that boys are better than girls. If a parent can afford to send one child to school, and they have a boy and a girl to choose from, they would much rather send the boy to school, and let the girl help with household activities. Why? Because many of these families rely on farming to make a living, and they feel that a boy would be a much bigger help to the family’s business, and that girls can make themselves useful around the house instead.

Did you know that the percentage of girls going to school is much, much lower than the percentage of boys. Here’s a table from IIMPACT in India:

Low  literacy  levels  in many  states

We watched a movie called Sparrow Village in school, and there was a girl living in rural China. Her parents were poor, and could barely afford to keep her in school. They had to wait until their pigs got “big and fat” and then sell them to make money. She badly wanted to finish high school, but she knew that her parents would suffer if she did. But then, she reasoned, if she didn’t study hard and be educated, what would her future be? In the movie, we saw that one of her friend’s parents took her out of school and decided to send her brother to school instead, even though she was a better student.

Girls are just as good as boys, just in a different way, and girls can do everything a boy can do. So why is it that a girl’s rights and a boy’s rights are so different in these countries? What can we do to help? There is a charity called IIMPACT, and it helps keep girls in school in India. There is also the Zigen Fund, which also helps young girls and women who are illiterate or cannot afford education. I am including the link to both of the websites, so you can see what they do, and hopefully support them. Please support girl education!

Face The Waste- Masks

by 053569 on March 23, 2012

For our “How We Organize Ourselves” unit, we made recycled masks. My mask looks like this:

I think that my mask shows these concepts:

-Texture- The bangs are fuzzy and the rest of the hair is smooth.

-Color- My mask has different hues of pink, silver and a little bit of black.

-Contrast- My mask’s bangs are fuzzy while the rest of the hair is smooth(ish). The mask is smooth while the cheeks and mouth are fuzzy.

-Balance- I think my mask is symetrical with the exception of the iPod (sunk in water and put in the washing machine- not by me!)

-Rhythm- My mask’s bangs have a pattern (purple, black, purple, black, purple, black…)

I hope you like it!!!
